Problem 16-102

The mechanism used in a marine engine consists of a crank AB and two connecting rods BC and BD. Determine the velocity of the piston at C the instant the crank is in the position shown and has an angular velocity of 5 rad/s.

Given

AB = 5 rad/s AB = 0.2 m

BC = 0.4 m BD = 0.4 m

Solution
Since the crankshaft rotates about a xed point, we know that vB = (5 rad/s)(0.2 m) = 1.0 m/s We then dene our IC.

By law of sines, we then know that, rB/IC 0.4 m = sin(75 ) sin(45 ) rB/IC = 0.54641 m Next, since vB is known, we can calculate BC . BC = Then, vC = BC rC/IC = 0.89658 m/s vB = 1.8301 rad/s rC/IC rC/IC 0.4 m = sin(60 ) sin(45 ) rC/IC = 0.48990 m
