Press Release
Sacramento Firefighters Ratify Pension Concessions
Agreement Saves Vital Rescue and Fire Services for Citizens of Sacramento Sacramento, CASacramento Firefighters voted this week to pay the entire Employer portion of the Citys pension expense. This will allow vital services, such as Rescue, Boat Rescue, and HAZMAT Response Teams, to continue to protect the citizens of Sacramento. In addition, the current staffing model of four person Fire Engines, Trucks, and Rescue units will not be cut, allowing a higher level of safety for the residents and effectiveness of the Firefighters. The vote this week constitutes the fifth concession in four years by the Firefighters and the second concession in 12 months related to pensions. Last year, the Firefighters led the way on pension reform becoming the first labor organization in the City of Sacramento to agree to pay into their pensions. This was not an easy choice for the Firefighters. It took months of intense negotiations with the City, and weeks of internal discussion and debate; but, in the end, Sacramento Firefighters once again chose the safety of the citizens over their own financial wellbeing, said Ryan Henry, Vice President of Sacramento Area Firefighters. Firefighters President Brian Rice agreed, stating, This once again shows that the collective bargaining process can be a success when all parties are willing to work together for the common good of the citizens. Rice continued, The willingness of City Council and the Firefighters to work together was absolutely instrumental in bringing this agreement to fruition, and cannot be overstated. This latest agreement, which will take effect in July, will save the City approximately $1.5 million a year on top of the $3.5 million a year in ongoing pension savings Sacramento Firefighters have already agreed to in order to maintain critical services.
