Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis

Les Chtis is an in depth commentary on French culture, specifically regional affiliation, regional dialects and marital problems. In the next three paragraphs we will see how these things are connected in the film and the French society. Regional affiliation is something that is very common and very strong in France. Normally regions are rather small and there are lots of them, but all the people between regions differ dramatically. Mainly differences are connected with geographical location, but also with historical background. All the regional differences that contributed to the culture of France, harmed to the unity of the country. Specific areas in France carry their specific dialects. That is basically what is the film build upon. The dialects of the central part of France and northern differ dramatically. And naturally people treat all the other people as complete strangers. Without even any will to understand them. But the film showed us if only someone could make a little effort to get into the other stream, things would not seem that dramatic at all. Another important aspect of the movie is emphasis on families. There were two main heroes. One of them was married already and another one was not, but got married eventually at the end of the film. Throughout the play we can see these people acting differently. The married guy is very pedantic and careful in all aspects. He treats everything with caution: food, work, leisure. The single man, on the other hand does not care at all. He seems to enjoy every single moment of his life without thinking of any consequences. The brightest example of that is how he gets drunk at work. However, as soon as he starts thinking about the girl, he starts taking care of the things that go around him, he becomes more. As a conclusion I would like to say that of course it is not a deep film and should not be treated seriously, but I bet that lots of French from Normandy took it serious and might have not found it funny or even got offended. Saying that it is clear that the French are aware of the differences between their regions and that is the first step of unifying the country and celebrating the diverse country.
