SRIVAISHNAVISM
From the desk of

|| Saraswati and Sri vaishnavism : Vedic View ||

First of all, let me thank all of you for your kind words on my contributions to the Group's efforts. Thru private and public mail, you have encouraged me to share what little I know and learn from one and all. One single life will be insufficient to understand even a small portion of the immanence and permanence of our Kula Dhanam. Even if we do not have the Aacharam and Anushtaanam of our predecessors and Acharyas, the least we can do is to approach the inherited wealth from a humble perspective and try to reflect on their deep meanings to derive solace and comfort during our limited sojourn on the earth of Sriya:Pathi. In this context, It is a privelege and honor for me to participate in the discussions on our ancient and rich Sampradhayam. May all of our efforts to keep this group's efforts to expand our knowledge and reverence for the teachings of Great Accharyas and Azhwars and Vedic Seers grow! Prior to Making a few observations on the Significance of Saraswati from a different perspective, at this early hour of the dawn of a new day, I wish to offer my salutations to the ever-inspiring thought of Sri Nigamaantha Maha Desikan of Thooppul: "Naanilamum Thaan Vazha Naanmaraigal Thaam Vazha Maanagarin Maaran Marai Vazha --Jnaniyargal

10

Senni aNi Ser Thuppul Vedantha Desikareh Innumoru NurraaNdirum" The essence of the verse touches all the interrelated subjects of our reverence. This Swasti Vachanam and the salutation to our illustrious Acharya is a profoundly meaningful one. Swami Desikan's Sri Sookthis are recognized as the contibutory cause for the well being of the four kinds of land (Kuriji, Mullai et al recognized by Sangam literature). It is also identified as the contributor for the upholding of the Four Vedas , since he is the Vedanthaachaarya, who identified with the sacredness of the Vedas in the tradition of Sri Rramanuja siddhantham. The next salutation is to the Thiruvaimozhi of Kuruhoor Satakopan. Maanagar is Thirukkuruhoor. Maran is Satakopan and Maaran Marai is the Tamizh Vedas of our Ubhya Vedaantha Sampradhayam. The Taniyan or invocatory verse seeking Swami Desikan's blessings points out that his holy feet adorn the heads of Jnanis. The Taniyan prays for the permanent presence and influence of his Sri Suktis and his Teachings for another hundred Years. Sriram"s question on the significance of Saraswati in Sri Vaishnava Sampradhaayam is a welcome one. There seem to be many aspects. In the post-Vedic mythology, Saraswati is recognized as the goddess of Speech and the wife of Brahma, the son of Vishnu. In Vedas, Saraswati is part of a triad. The other two are: Bharathi and Ila. Bharathi is recognized as the wife of one of the Adityas and Ila is recognized as the wife of Vishnu or Maha Lakshmi. In Kanchipuram, Sthalapuranas refer in this context to Brahma"s Yajna to gain the blessings of Sriman Narayana to take the Archa form of Varaadraja. Saraswathi"s anger at her husband and the effort to destroy her husband's Yajna as a Fast flowing river (Vega Vaahini) and the Lord's hampering of that effort through his role as a dam to arrest the flow of Saraswati and the intended consequences. In one of the Divya Desams of Kanchi associated with this legend, Saraswati, the daughter-in-law is standing at the feet of the reclining Lord seeking His pardon for the Aparaadham. In the post-Vedic Purana period, Sarawati is also recognized as one of the Sapta Sindhus (Vitasta, Indus, Asikni, Parushni, Vipaasha, Sutudri and SARASWATI.) In the Vedic parlance, Saraswati is not a river, but Vedic Speech couched in Seven meters (Gayatri, Trishtup, Jagati, Brihati, Anushyup, Ushnik and Pankti). Seven Sister rivers or Vedic Speech is also understood as the organs, which "convey" knowledge: Two eyes, two ears, two nostrils and tongue. The Mythology is a post-Vedic Development. The Vedas and Brahmanaas recognize Saraswati as the DIVINE SPEECH (Aitreya Brahmaanam II.24, III .1,2 ) .The Rig Vedam in Particular recognizes Saraswati at many places as the Divine Speech associated weith revealed Knowledge( RV X.17.7, I.13.9, X.110.8,I.22.10,.I.3, 11-12) . Yajur Vedic Verse (XXVII.19) praises the divine speech and recognizes its three different aspects as Ida (Priaseworthy Speech), Saraswati (a speech full of divine Knowledge) and Bharathi (a speech replete with Vedic Lore). Another Yajur vedic verse (VIII.43) describes the eleven qualities of noble and divine Saraswati as a woman and pays Tribute to Her::Praisewrthy (Ideh), Delightful (Ranteh), Worshipful (Havyeh), Lovable( Kaamyeh), Plesuregiving (Chandreh), Well known for virtuous qualities and inviolable (Jyothiradhiteh), Full of divine knowledge (SARASWATI) ,Mahi (adorable),

11

Visruthi (Knower of the Vedas and worthy of respect). This mantra seeks the blessings of the Lady of 11 noble qualities. Yet another verse of Yajur Veda (XXIX.8) Prays: " May Bharati, the speech of Adityas, illuminate your Yajna; May Saraswati, the speech of Rudras ,be our helper. May Ida, the speech invoked in accord by the Vasus give us happiness. May these three Goddesses place us amongst the immortals". The reference to Adityas, Rudras and Vasus are to three types of Celibiates. These three intellectual forces are beseeched to guide us and be the source of our Comfort elsewhere in Yajur Veda. Atharva Veda also recognizes Saraswati as the manifold streams of knowledge and blessings of this and the other world. Devaraja Yajvan, the commentator of Yaska"s Niruktam derives the word Saraswati as "Sarah Prasaranamasyaastithiti ".,i.e. Sarawati is the one, whose expanse is this creation. This concept is backed by the Rg Vedic Verse (X.17.7) quoted above: "Men aspiring for transcendental knowledge invoke the LORD Saraswati; When one aspires to undertake sacred works for the good of all (Adhvara), they also invoke Saraswati. This Saraswati blesses all of them, who dedicate themselves for noble ends." This fits with the Intrepretation of Aurobindo who equates Saraswati to the Vedic Rtam, the truth -consciousness principle. The link between man's limited mind and vast Cosmic mind/intelligence/speech (Saraswati= Rtam Brihat) is implied in the invocation of the Vedic Naama of Saraswati according to these scholars. The short statement of the Link between Saraswati and Sri Vaishnavism in my humble opinon is that of the Niruktam definition, which identifies Saraswati as the the entire expanse of creation as the body of the Lord Sriman Narayana. I will conclude this rather lengthy post with two salutations to Saraswati from the Rg Veda: "Saraswati ,the inspirer of those who delight in truth, the instructress of the right- minded ,has accepted our sacrifice(SandhyaVandhanam?)." Rg Vedam I.3.11 "Saraswati makes manifest by Her acts a mighty river and in Her own form enlightens ALL understandings." Rg Vedam I.3.12 May Saraswati"s blessings and Vedic Knowledge be with us always! V. Sadagopan

Maddur
Ugra Narasimha Swamy Temple

The Ugra Narasimha Swamy Temple situated in Maddur a place in between Bangalore and Mysore has a Special significance. The Sthala Puranams says that In Dwapara Yuga Arjuna asked Lord Sri Krishna the he wished to see the Narasimha Avatara , for that Lord Sri Krishna told that it is not possible but he can arrange for a darshan of Ugra Narasimha and he asked him to proceed to the present day Maddur. The old timers say the Maddur was known as Arjunapuri also . Purans says that Sri Kadamba Rishi lived here and worshipped the Lord due to this it is also know as Kadamba Kshetra and Nadi which is flowing here is also know as Kadamba Nadi. Now we enter the Small and compact temple of Lord Ugra Narasimha Swamy of Maddur. And here Swamy gives you darshan with eight hands and Three eyes which is a very rare sight. With two hands he is tearing the Asura Hiranya Kasipu who is lying in his lap, with other two hands he is wearing the Hiranya Kasipu's Intestine as Mala, then in the other two hands he is holding Pasha and Ankusha and in other two hands as usual he is holding the Shanku and Chakara. At the feet of lord our Garuthaman stands on left side and on the right Bhaktha Prahalada is standing in Posture doing Namskaram. It is said that Swamis third eye came when he was doing the Hiranya Kasipu's Samhara. It is very rare to see a Thinetra Dari Narasimha ( Here we can recollect the the Narasimha Sostra which describes the lord Narasimha as Jwala Kesham , Tri Netram) Now we have the darshan of our Lord Ugra Narasimha and come out. Then we see a Sannidhi for Lord Srinivasa, Then next Sannidhi is of Matha Yashode breast feeding Our Lord Kuti Krishnan It is also a rare Murthy , then we step into praharam and on the left side corner we find Goddess Sowmiya Nayaki and then after having her darshan we move to right side corner and we see Goddess Narasimha Nayaki. Then we walk further we come across Sannidhi of Patabhishekam Ramar then once we come out of praharam we immediately find the Sannidhi for Udayavar, Namalwar and Swami Desikan. It is said these temples were reconstructed during the period of Hoysala Kings regime. It is said if you pray sincerely and say that you will do Thirumanjanam to Lord your wishes will be fulfilled

13 . It is also said that if childless couple do Thirumanjanam and then after manjalkappu of perumal is taken out and put in a vessel and with that the childless couple is given a bath and then the couple will be blessed with a child. One more thing is also done, If you land up without notice and somebody else is doing the Thirumanjanam then you can pay some token amount to the person who is getting the Thirumanjanam done and then you can undergo the same ritual as mentioned above. The Temple Timings are Daily Morning 8.00 Am to 12.00 Pm and Evening 5.30 Pm to 8.30 Pm. On Tuesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays Morning 10.30 Am - 2.30 Pm and Evening 5.30 Pm to 8.30 Pm. Gita The Wisdom of Krishna Practical Guide to Right and Happy Living: In Twenty - Seven Self-contained Essays:

Thotalam Chellaswami, Trustee, Srinivasa Gita Satsangh Trust (Retir20. The Law of Least Effort: Retd Senior I. E. S. Officer Govt. of India and Senior Advisor UN (ILO):

8. The Purusha Uninvolved with Material Prakriti:

Immediately following the above observations, the Lord makes, rather, a surprising observation: The Supreme Spirit (purusha parah), transcendent and existing in the body, is the detached beholder, consenter, the sustainer, the experiencer, the great Lord and also the higher self. [13.22]: [The great knowledge of clearly discriminating the nature and the divergent roles of prakriti and purusha confers great merit on the purusha. Krishna goes on to explain various ways of gaining this knowledge so that the purusha is liberated from this mundane existence in the verses to follow.]:
1. The verse (13.22 is variously interpreted by the commentators. One interpretation considers the term purusha parah as the Brahman in His role as kshetrajnah. Though the Supreme Being (Purusha) manifests itself as the individual soul and as prakriti (cosmic Nature) and the human body (a modification of prakriti), He remains simultaneously transcendent, beyond and different from His manifestation. The contact of the body though common to the individual soul and the kshetrajna (the innermost Soul), the individual soul alone is destined to reap the consequences of its deeds and not the kshetrajna. The very purpose of the body is for the jeevas experiencing of karma-phala, for it cannot be experienced by the jeeva without the medium of a body. But to the Supreme Being, the

contact of His body (the sentient and the non-sentient) in consequence of His being the inner Soul of them all (kshetrajnah) is not due to any karma. It is self imposed on account of His infinite mercy for all jeevas whom He guides (if it is sought earnestly) to pursue the means to get total liberation from samsaara cycle (vide 18.62). It is in this sense the earlier explained Lords observations, namely, - I do not abide in them (9.4); nor do the beings rooted in Me (9.5); these actions do not bind Me, O Arjuna, who remain like one unconcerned and unattached to these actions (of creation, etc.) (9.9) should be viewed. In this context, a reference may also be made to the well known observation in the Mundaka Upanishad in which the jeevaatma and Paramaatma are likened to two birds perched on the same tree suggestive of the jeevaatma and paramaatma abiding in the same body. The one (the jeevaatma) is enjoying the fruits of karma (pippalam) sense enjoyments in the Vedic sense and the other (paramaatma) is sitting absolutely detached and witnessing and shining with much effulgence. In the light of the above observations, we may, perhaps, understand the Verse (13.22), immediately following the discussion on purusha and prakriti in (13.1921). In (13.22) it is clearly stated that there is another transcendental purusha (purusha parah), described as the Supreme Self, Sovereign Lord, the unconcerned Witness, the Sanctioner, the Supporter and the Enjoyer. So it would be in order, in the light of discussion above, if the Verse is interpreted as suggesting that the purusha and prakriti are unified in the Supreme Deity (as the kshetrajna), whose powers the purusha and prakriti are. Thus the purusha parah (Supreme Person) referred to in (13.22) can be identified as the kshetrajna, residing in the same body as the bound individual soul, as the most exalted witness to activities of the individual soul, and ever ready to provide necessary guidance to the soul, if it is sought, and exercising Lordly powers. This is a valid enough interpretation of Verse (13.22). 2. It is stated that the supreme soul (paramaatma) in the body merely watches (upadrasht'aa) without approval, the jeevas involvement in prakriti; He blesses or approves (anumantaa) the jeevas efforts to get out of this involvement; He supports (bhartaa) the jeeva when it seeks Gods guidance in its struggle against material nature towards liberation and realisation of its true nature as divine; at the next stage when the jeeva realises its true nature and as a consequence dedicates all the fruits of action to God, the Supreme Soul then becomes the enjoyer (bhoktaa) of such dedicated results. 3. But at the same time it is relevant to state here that many other commentators have interpreted the verse (13.22) differently, namely, - that it is a clarification on what is stated in verses (13.19-21), which refers to the purusha in bondage due to ignorantly identifying himself with the body (prakriti) in which he abides. The verse (13.22) only explains the true nature of the purusha not involved in or influenced by prakritis gunas. It is in this sense that the term purusha parah refers only to the individual soul (purusha), pure and uncontaminated by contact with prakriti and its gunas. In this interpretation reference to purusha is only in its relation with the body, which it indwells. With reference to the body-senses-mind-intellect-complex, the individual soul is supreme. Hence the terms purushah parah, paramaatmaa, and mahesvarah to indicate the individual soul is valid. It is this understanding or realisation that frees the jeeva from karma bondage and consequent getting out of samsaara cycle. As the Lord has stated in continuation: Whatever be his mode of life, he who thus realises purusha and prakriti thus together with the threefold nature of prakriti will not again suffer rebirth (consequence of karma bondage). [13.23]: 4. All states of consciousness and all activities of man are considered to be indirectly witnessed by God and to be directly brought about by prakriti and mans individual karma. God ever remains His Blissful Self, impartially witnessing His cosmic creative activity. Similarly, man made in His image should realise himself to be the immortal soul, impartially witnessing and playing his allotted role in this phenomenal world. Whatever may be the station in life and whether or not he acts in accordance with Scriptural injunctions, the man who knows the truth of spirit and matter is not subject to karma bondage. Divine realisation, the intuitive experience of truth, destroys all potentials of kaarmic bondage. 5. So, in whatever way we may interpret (13.22), the observations in (13.23) holds good, and it emphasise that the jeevaatma enshrouded in ignorance imagines himself as the body (prakriti) and so is the agent of all activities and so necessarily has to reap the fruits of his actions and so gets necessarily bound by karma bondage. But the fact is that this jeevaatma is an eternal part (amsa) of the great Lord enshrined in the Universe as its innermost Soul. Once this fact is truly realised, the jeevaatma is liberated from this samsaara cycle. 6. In conclusion it may be stated that, considering the verses (13.19 23) together and the context of discussion, it appears that the second interpretation, namely that the reference to purushah parah in (13.22) point to the liberated soul in its pristine purity seems to be more appropriate.

108 DIVYA DESAMS

Tamarapu Sampath Kumaran

Om Namo Narayanaya

TIRUKKURUGUR (Azhwar Tirunagari)

This Divya kshetram is one of the important Divya desams of the Nava Tirupathi temples. It is located around 25 Kms from Srivaikuntam. The moolavar is Adinathar in a standing posture and the Thayar Aadinatha valli also called Kurukoorvalli. The Theertham is Brahma Thertham and the Vimanam Govinda Vimanam. The legend has it that Indra was absolved of the curse by praying to the Lord at this kshetram. It is believed that Lakshmi meditated on Lord Vishnu when He was on a vow of celibacy, and responding to Her request accepted Her in marriage in the form of a garland of flowers (Magizha malar maalai). It is also believed that Lakshmi incarnated at this shetram as a tamarind tree, in which Nammaazhwar resided as a child and meditated on Lord Vishnu. Hence the name Azhwar Tirunagari. Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam: Nammaazhwar 3106-3116 (pasuram numbers as found in Naalaayira Divya prabhandam).

29

Arayar sevai, the rendering of the pasurams in the traditional dance style is being conducted in this temple. During the Tamil month of Vaikasi a festival is being conducted wherein the Utsava moorthis of the Nava Tirupathi temples, mounted on Garuda Vahana are brought to this temple and give darsan to Nammaazhwar seated on Hamsa vahana. On this occasion the pasurams of each deity are being recited by the devotees.

TIRUVILLIPUTTUR (Srivilliputhur)
This Divya kshetram is close to Tenkasi on Tenkasi Virudhunagar road. This shetram is the birthplace of Periaazhwar and Sri Andal. The moolavar is Vatapatrasayee in a reclining posture. In Andal shrine Lord Rangamannar is with Andal and Garudaazhwar on either side. The Thayar is also called Kothai Nachiyar. The Theertham is Tirumukkulam and the Vimanam Samsana Vimanam. The standing posture of Garuda along with Lord Vishnu is unique in this temple. The legend has it that Periaazhwar was serving the deity in this shetram by offering garlands from the garden he maintained. Once while plucking flowers in the garden he found a child on a flower in the garden and named her Andal and brought her up in the service of the Lord. One day Periaazhwar found Andal wearing the garland meant for the Lord. Discarding that garland he prepared fresh garland and offered them to the Lord. Periaazhwar was surprised to find the Lord refusing to accept the garland except the one used by Andal. Hence Andal is called Choodi Kudutha Nachiyar. As per the wishes of the Lord Periyaazhwar gave Andal in marriage to Sri Ranganathar and Andal on entering the sanctum merged with the Lord. It is believed that two hunters named Villi and Puthan built this town and hence this place gained the name Srivilliputhur. Andals celebrated 30 verses in praise of the Lord, called Tiruppavai, are being rendered in all Vaishnavite temples during the early hours of each day in the Tamil month of Margazhi. The temple has two major areas, considered as two temples. The northeastern segment is the Vatapatrasayee temple while the southwestern segment is Aandaal's temple. The Andal temple now stands on the place, which belonged to periyazhwar who had built his house there. As one enters the temple compound, one can see Sri periazhwar's Nandavanam on the left. Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam: Periyaazhwar 133Andal 549 (pasuram number as found in Naalaayira Divya prabhandam). The Tiruppavai verses are inscribed on the gold plated Vimanam of Andal sannadhi. This temple has among the tallest towers in Tamilnadu. The 12-tiered Rajagopuram rises to a height of 192 feet, with exquisite carvings, which has been adopted in the emblem of the Government of Tamilnadu.

DHARMA STHOTHRAM

Part 115.

Gramaneeh , Sreeman
IN Srimad Bagavatham it is said as to have a God realization we must have faith, sincerity and fervour which are needed in these ways. First one is determination, as God alone is worth striving for, and remembering and keeping our goal before our eyes Then cultivating and developing an intense, exclusive and all-consuming, longing to reach the goal is needed to end all miseries, sorrows and bestow absolute and eternal bliss. Seeking Satsanga, the company of holy men, saints and sages and remain in it imbibing their vibrations as long as we can is next requirement. For this, it is better to approach Acharya or Guru. Prayers to the Lord fervently for His grace and love and talk to Him confiding our problems and share our daily joys and sorrow with Him is also good. The next activity is constant remembrance of Sriman Narayana and chanting His name mentally or loudly at all times including when we are engaged in other work and other activities . In this, forgetting the worries or bothering about the body needs, health, money, home, family etc is must. Certain thiings will all he taken care of as per Prarabdha or destiny , which must be accepted as reality of all circumstances and events, however tragic or calamitous they may appear. Praying for the welfare and good of all those who abuse, insult or harm us and request the Lord to remove all ill will towards them from our heart is the best one. Dwelling on the elimination of our defects like passion, desires, anger and greed, are possible only by nama sankeerthanam and is the best for all times. Dharma Sthothram on namas 219 and 220 are dealt in this part. ". The 24th Sloka is Agraneeh Gramaneeh Sreeman Nyaayo Netah Sameeranah / Shasra

32 moordha Visvaatmaa Sahasraakshah Sahasra-paath // In this 218th nama was explained in the previous part. The 219th nama is Gramaneeh which means He who is the leader of the hosts of angels , Bagawan leads the hosts of ever free angels .He has the command over Bhutagramah or the collectivity of all beings. He ia appointing authority of Pancha bhutas, and the leader of hosts of angels. Thirumazhisai Azhwar in Tiruchanda Virutham refers to the panchabhutas refers five great elements in creation as Poo nilaaya ainthumai, punarkan ninra nankumai, thee nilaya moonrumai, sirantha kal irandumai mee nilayathu onrum ( Five great gross Elements in creation ) and its attributes or qualities. The gross elements are Five like Ether (Akaasha), Air (Vayu) , Fire ( Agni), Water( Jala) and Earth( Bhoomi ) The gross elements are made of Subtle . Azhwar further says that everything is Lord Himself in the next pasuram as ainthum ainthum ainthum aghi..The five gross elements ( pancha Bhutas ), sense organs, and their functions totalling ten, five thanmathras,Prakruthi, Mahan, Ahankara, Manas, are Lord Himself who is ruling these as spirit of these .He has permeated ten senses by five shaktis of upanishadic origin, He is the five enjoyments of Sound , Enjoyer, instrument, devas, sages, liberated souls, etc. Thus this nama gramaneeh describes the great leadership of Sriman Narayana. The 220th nama is Sriman which means one who endowed with good wealth, with full of glories, radiant, Lord of Sri Maha Lakshmi, or Lakshmi in Vaksha sthala Alarmel mangai urai marban , and who is endowed with full powers. He also shines well. Sree means Light, Effulgence or glory. Consciousness has all these three, and therefore, Sriman means the Self, the Lord. Peyazhwar in Moonram Thiruvanthathi first pasuram says as " Thirukkanden pon meni kanden, Thigazhum Arukkan Ani niramum kanden . Azhwar says the majestic look in Archavataram, shining like a glorious sun , having victorious Shankam and chakram, and Sri Mahalakshmi in the chest are all possible to one who worships Sriman Narayana. In second pasuram it is said as one is sure to avoid seven births, if one is able to enjoy the surrender to Sriman Narayana who is with Tulsi garland and in whom Sri Maha lakshmi enjoys Him always. In Dwaya manthram Sriman narayana saranau saranam prabhatye Srimannarayana Namaha Sri takes place in poorva vakyam and uthara vakyam confirming thr presence of Sri Maha Lakshmi .In Periazhwar's Thiruppallandu also Thirumale ' naan unakku pazhavadiyen Sriyapathi or Sriman is well presented. He is endwed with wealth and is in possession of the transcended glory and overlord ship. He is one whose wealth is lotus eyes . Nurtures all by his sight like a fish nurturing its fry. The word 'Sriman ' being used nowadays for all human beings is not acceptable one as it is apt only for Sriman Narayana.

Inner meanings based on Sri Perukkaarani swami commentary

In todays paasuram, Andal following the footsteps of her father performs pallandu for Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna pleased with the gopi's prayers awakens and walks towards his simhaasanam with a beautiful gait. The Lords lotus feet are very soft; so soft that they become red even when Thaayar with Her very soft hands (softer than lotus petals) messages His lotus feet. The gopis had butterflies in their stomach as they were worried Lord Krishnas feet would hurt as He walks towards the simhasanam. Hence they sang pallandu. (I couldnt resist myself from sharing Lord Krishnas pastime of having a head ache. Sri Mukkur swami beautifully narrates this pastime in Kurai ondrum illai Govinda. Lord Krishna asked for baagavatha paada dhuuli as a cure for His headache (indeed He is besahajam bishak). All devotes including Uddavar refused as they were worried of incurring sin, whereas, the gopi's did not care about going to narakam. All the pancha laksham gopis sat down and gathered dust from their feet by scratching them with coconut shells and sent bullock carts of their dust to Krishna. Their love and devotion is extraordinary. Such is their paarathandriyam!) Andal begins with Pallandu for Thiruvikkrama perumal. The Lord when He appeared as Vamana, begged for three feet of land which He did not get. Hence Andal granted His wish and gave three lines (adi in Tamil means both line and feet) for Thiruvikraman Ongi Ulagalanndha

42 (3), Ambaram Udaruthu Ongi Ulagalanndha (17) and anRu ivvulakam aLannthaay adi (24) in Thiruppaavai. Hence this paasuram is considered very auspicious. Andal then sings Palladu to Lord Rama who took the trouble and walked all the way to DhandakAraNya forest with His Lotus feet cenRaNGkuth thennilaNGkai ceRRaay thiRal). Next Andal sings pallandu to Lord Krishna who kicked and vanquished Satakaasuran with His lotus feet ponRac cakatam uthaiththaay pukazh). In this paasuram Andal brings out Saranagathy (adi- His Lotus feet) along with its six angams, anukoolasya sankaalpam, pratikoolasya varjanam, mahaa visvaasam, goptruva varnam, kaarpanyam and phala tyagam by singing pOtRRi six times. During Thiruvikrama avataram, the Lord measured all the worlds with His lotus feet and branded them with His sankam & cakram symbols that He created them and it belongs to Him (anRu ivvulakam aLan^thaay) . Here Andal proclaims Jagath kaaranatvam of SrimanNarayana. The Lord takes different forms as, Paramatma, Acharya & Vibhavam to protect His devotees while destroying Rakshashas (cenRaNGkuth). Bagavat Gita says our mind can be a best friend like in the case of Vibhishana, or the worst enemy like in the case of Ravana (atmano bhandur atmaiva ripur atmanah;). Lord Rama destroyed Ravana and crowned Vibhishana. Similarly, The Lord gives as Jnanam to destroy the evil side of the mind (thennilaNGkai ceRRaay) and enhances our bakti towards Him (un thiRalpOttri). The Lord destroys our desire (mano ratham) for material enjoyment like He destroyed the cart demon Satakasuran (ponRac cakatam uthaiththaay). Thus He throws away our growing punyams and paapams like He threw and destroyed a demon named Vatsasura that came in the form of a calf (kanRu kuNilaa eRinnthaay). He protects us from the rain of sins (praarabhdam and Sanchitam) with His kalyana Gunams (gunam) Souseelyam, Soulabyam and Vatsalyam like He protected the entire citizens of Vrindvanam from the torrential rain sent by Indran by lifting Govardhana Giri (kunRu kutaiyaay etuththaay). Andal thus assures that, the Lord out of mercy (iraNGku ElOr) removes all obstacles (venRu pakai ketukkum) that are in the way of attaining Him. The Lord also shows His otus feet as the means (adisaranagathy) to attain Him. Andal also elucidates that Moksham (parai) means eternal service (enRenRu un cEvakamE) to the Lord at Sri Vaikuntam (Eththi-ascend). In essence, Andal proclaims Sriman Narayana is both our means and end! to be continued.. Acharyars thiruvadigale Saranam! Sri Andal Rangamannar Thiruvadigale Saranam!

Sri Navaneetha Krishnan Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Temple (Old) This is located in the Sarva mangala nagar. As the historical researches have revealed, the small place of Nanganallur had existed even during the 8th century A.D., It was also chosen by the Pallava monarchs of Kanchipuram as a site for a number of sprawling Vishnu temples. Several artifacts had been excavated that include a beautiful stone image of Lord Narayana, about five and a half feet in height portrayed in a typical Pallava style. An image of Goddess Bhudevi, with a bell, a plate and a lamp is extremely captivating. The metal bell found here with the imposing image of Goddess Bhudevi is a unique one, since the top of the handle contains the images of Sudarsana (the discus of Lord Vishnu) and Panchajanya (His conch) one inlaid within the other. Normally they are found on either side of the top portion of a bell. An inscription in Tamil datable to the 10th century A.D. discovered at this ancient place has the detailed description of the registration of the gifted land for meeting the expenses of lighting two lamps everyday. The main sanctum, facing east enshrines the imposing image of the principal

48
Deity,Lord Lakshmi Narasimha. The other murtis, which adorned the beautiful mainsanctum are those of Lord Pradosha Narasimha, for whom special worship isperformed during every pradosha and Sri Chakrattazhvar (Sudarsana). Also seen here are images of Sri Vishvaksena, Svami Nammazhvar, Sri Ramanuja and Sri Vedanta Desika. An interesting and rare architectural feature of this sanctum is a circular shaped pillar which resembles a stambha from which Lord Narisimha emerged to protect His child-devotee Prahlada. The shrine housing the image of Lord Sri Sudarshana with Lord Narasimhar at theback is designed like a chariot, circular in shape. The vimana is one of the chief interests about the temple and is known as Veda chakra Vimana. Interestingly, the prayoga chakra` (the discus held by Lord Narayana just prior to release) of an old Pallava Vishnu image which was earlier excavated here, has been installed in front of the Chakrattazhvar shrine, which has enhanced the traditional grandeur of the temple. This exceptional Vishnu image is properly mounted on a small structure, enabling devotees to actually touch it and pray for their wishes.Apart from the above mentioned sub shrines, there is another significant sanctum stationed in this temple, which is dedicated to Lord Navaneeta Krishna. Here, themain image holds a ball of butter in His right hand while His left hand holds the conch. Lord Navaneedha krishnar magnetises the devotees with his teasing smile. It is interesting to note that the shrine for Lord Krishna is octagonal (eight-sided) in shape. The myths and legends associated with the temple reveal that the octagonal design of the temple has a special significance. According to these stories since He was the eighth child of Vasudev and Devaki, the shrine dedicated to the Lord is octagonal in design. Also erected in this temple is a separate sanctum for Lord Srinivasa, whose image is guarded with the tall dvajastambha. It is venerated as the gift from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. There is a sanctum dedicated to Lord Kothandarama with Sita Devi, Lakshmana and Hanuman. Directly in front of Lord Rama`s shrine and inside the prayer-hall is erected a small image of Hanuman called Bhaktakoti Anjaneya. The devotees are permitted to offer and apply dabs of butter on the image, while praying for the fulfillment of their wishes. So, the Anjaneyar here is seen always with butter alankaram. Just outside the prayer-hall and facing the shrine of Lord Rama is the sacred sanctum dedicated to Sanjeevi Anjaneya with His right hand held aloft. A significant feature of the temple is that there is also a separate sanctum for Azhwars with exclusive cubicle for each Azhwar in a neat row. Lakshmi Narasimha Navaneetha Krishna Temple has many antique sculptural pieces which enhanced the scenic beauty of the temple precincts. There is a beautiful circular chamber of mirrors with a beautiful and unusual gopuram that adds a charming view to the temple. The decorated images of the Lord are taken on special occasions near these mirrors. Inside the chamber there are erected four pillars carrying the image of Lord Narasimha. Throughout the entire length of the wall there are a series of mirrors reflecting the images. Apart from these, pictures of the deities of 108 Divya Desams adorn the walls. The paintings of the walls are outstanding and depicting the thirty pasurams of the Tiruppavai. Pictures of some Divya Desams are found on the external wall, thus making the chamber really a `House of Art`. Theinner chamber is fitted with strategically placed, large-sized mirrors, which give theviewer a multi-reflection of the images of the deities placed within.Sri Lakshmi Nrisimha Navaneeta temple apart from being a sacrosanct is also the specimen of the architectural skill of the contemporary artists. As a whole the temple is a symbol of antiquity. The day we went was the day of once-a-year Annakkoodai annual festival (Masi Chithirai) at the Lakshmi Narasimhar shrine. When we went, here again, the Thirumanjanam was taking place and we had a wonderful dharshan. Ivargal Tiruvakku The greatest wealth

Scriptures show how life can be made meaningful, both materially and spiritually. The Isavasya Upanishad says, This entire universe is pervaded by the Lord for the reason that it is dependent upon primordial nature, which in its turn is also pervaded by Him. He alone is thus independent. For this reason, enjoy whatever is given to you by Him, and do not seek wealth from any other source. Awareness of the Supreme Brahman and His auspicious qualities is the greatest wealth that one can possess, and this is reinforced by preceptors, pointed out Asoori Sri Madhavachariar in a discourse. Vedanta Desika asserts that Ishwara Jnana is the best wealth that is strong, cannot be stolen or given away as tax, and even when bequeathed cannot cause enmity among one's progeny. The brothers of Lord Rama exemplify noble qualities that everyone should be inspired to emulate. Bharata bore the responsibility of ruling Ayodhya in a very dispassionate manner with total commitment as a representative and servant of Lord Rama. He honoured Lord Rama's Padukas as the ruler. All decisions and orders bore the seal of the Padukas during the error-free 14-year rule in Ayodhya. Bharata always remained subordinate to the Lord, the Absolute Ruler. Lakshmana exemplifies the spirit of dedicated service to the Lord in yet a different manner. He is extolled as Lakshmi Sampanna one endowed with the highest wealth. He was most fortunate to possess the exclusive rights to render uninterrupted service to Lord Rama. Vaishnava tradition celebrates the relationship between the Jivatma and the Lord as akin to that of a master and servant (Sesha Seshi Bhava). The Jivatma longing for salvation yearns to serve the Lord at all times, and undertakes one's ordained duties with a spirit of worship to the Lord. Shatrugna's name signifies one who has conquered the enemies. In this case, the enemies are the senses that are difficult to control. Shatrugna dedicated his life to the service of Bharata and he is symbolic of the tradition of Bhagavata Bhakti, that is, devotion to the Lord's devotees.
