AIM:To find out the rate of corrosion for the given metal piece by immersing in concentrated acid. APPARATUS:Beakers etc MATERIALS:Metal piece , Acid. THEORY:Corrosion is the destruction of a metal or alloy by chemical or electrochemical reactions with it environment. When a metal like iron is kept in acid solution like H2SO4 metal will start corrosing and so metal loss. Generally types of corrosion can be classify as below. 1. Dry corrosion. 2. Wet corrosion. Metal or non metal in chemically affected by a corrosiveon liquids or gas is known as dry corrosion while wet corrosion accuse in moist conditions and is primarily electro-chemical in nature. PROCEDURE:1. Clean the metal piece and make its surface shining with help of sand paper. 2. Calculate the total surface area and weight of that metal piece by balance. 3. Take known amount of conc. acid solution in beaker. 4. Keep slowly the metal piece in the beaker which is containing acid soln. 5. Allow metal piece in solution for certain time limit and notedown that time. 6. Again clean the metal piece with sand paper after keeping it in acid soln. for sufficient time. 7. Weight the metal piece and by formula find out the rate of corrosion in gms/unit surface area per unit time. Rates of corrosion = W /( A * ) gm/cm2 *hr

RESULTS:1. Rate of corrosion = _________gms/cm2.hr. 2. Rate of corrosion = _________mdd. OBSERVATION:-

Weight of metal piece before keeping in acid soln.=__________gms Surface area of that metal piece (A) = __________cm2. Weight of metal piece after keeping in acid soln(W2) = _________ Loss of weight of metal piece due to corrosion (W1 W2)= _______ Time of keeping the piece in the acid () =_________

CALCULATION:1. Surface area calculation. 1) Length of side A L1 2) Breath of side A B1 3) Length of side B L2 4) Breath of side B B2 5) Length of side C L3 6) Breath of side C B3 AREA = 2 (A) + 2(B) + 2 (C) = = = = =
