ASTABLE MULTIVIBRATOR BASED DECADE COUNTER

-BY NAVEEN KANT SINGH

INTRODUCTION:

A counter is a sequential circuit which is used to count the pulses. A counter which resets at the 10th clock pulse is called as decade counter.

This is also known as BCD counter.

Introduction contd

A decade counter is a binary counter that is designed to count from decimal value 0 (0000) to decimal value 10 (1010). An ordinary four stage counter can be easily modified to a decade counter by adding a NAND gate.

Components of circuit:

ICIC1- NE555N IC2- HCF4017BE CAPACITOR( in microfarad)C1- 220 RESISTANCE (in ohms)R1- 1K ohm R2- 10K ohm R3- 220 ohm R4- 220 ohm R5- 1K ohm R6- 220 ohm LEDD1-D12- 5mm BATTERY9V

Operation:1)-FF-2 and FF-4 provide the inputs to the NAND gate, the NAND gate output are connected to CLR input of each FFs. 2)-The counter operates as a normal counter until it reaches to decimal value 10 (1010). 3)-After that both the input of NAND gate become high and the output goes low. 4)-This low applied to the CLR input of FFs causes them to reset to 0 (0000). 5)-Once the FFs reset they start to count again from beginning. Conclusion:

In this output of IC 555 is taken at pin 3 which is connected to pin 14 of decade counter(4017 B) so that LED start glowing and working as a chaser light. Pin1 &3 of IC 555 gives the clock pulse of complete one cycle is about 150 ms and their frequency is about 6.66Hz. The threshold voltage of IC 555 is measured 5.0 volt between pin 1&6.
