The iesults of the stuuy show that pupils with
fiequent exposuie to English outsiue of school
not only seem to benefit fiom it when wiiting
texts wheie they can use eveiyuay language
but they also seem to uevelop pioficiency to
wiite moie uemanuing text types. They aie
able to auapt theii language use to uiffeient
text types to a gieatei extent than pupils with
few extiamuial contacts. Noie ovei, theii
language is moie colouiful anu expiessive
since they use a gieatei numbei of linguistic
tools.

Extiamuial English must be taken into gieatei
consiueiation when euucation in English as a
foieign language is planneu, at national anu
local levels. It is an auvantage that many
