More dramatic makeovers that involve plastic surgery or intense cosmetic procedures are often a part of popular American TV shows like Extreme Makeover. The rise in popularity of reality TV in the 1990s also popularized makeover TV shows. These makeover TV shows take everyday Americans, often at the covert recommendation of friends, and give them elaborate makeovers. Makeovers usually involve new wardrobes, cosmetics, and hairstyles.

Casual or dressy
American women choose their outfits based on the occasion. It is very common to wear one outfit to work or class during the day then change to go out at night to a party, club, or dinner. American men are less likely to change clothes so frequently and the distinction of appropriate men's dress for various activities is less clear in American culture.
