Season 6 of Natural Heroes is underway
KRCBs Natural Heroes, following on the heels of its sixth Emmy win, is preparing to commence work on its sixth season. KRCB produces this popular series and distributes it to PBS stations across the country. Sonoma County-based General Hydroponics/ Alices Garden has signed on to support the series for Season 6, having also supported the first five. Joining General Hydroponics will be the Keith Campbell Foundation, the third season in which Campbell has been a lead funder. And we are pleased to welcome a new funder, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the Stephen Bechtel Fund. Bechtel is a strong supporter of environmental education and realizes the potential for Natural Heroes to be a strong tool in the classroom. KRCB will be working with PBS LearningMedia, a relatively new project of PBS, which is taking advantage of and building on new digital media platforms to intensify the classroom experience. By partnering with PBS LearningMedia, Natural Heroes will benefit by increasing awareness and credibility among educators. This tool is available free to every teacher and student in America. We thank the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation for making this next important step possible. On to a successful Season 6 for Natural Heroes.

Whats happening at KRCB?

Dust off your Emily Dickinson!

KRCB is proud to announce that we have been awarded another Big Read grant from The National Endowment for the Arts. Our partner once again is the Sonoma County Library. In March 2013, Big Read, Sonoma County will feature the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Kiyo Okazaki, Public Services Manager for the Sonoma County Library, says: We are excited to again partner with KRCB and other community groups for The Big Read. For the past ten years, Sonoma County Reads! and Big Read, Sonoma County have brought many people in to the library and taken the library out into the community. It has given us the opportunity to create valuable partnerships with many educational, cultural and recreational groups. We look forward to another successful year! More information will be forthcoming; contact Cheryl Scholar, Big Read Project Manager, at cheryl_scholar@krcb.org or (707) 584-2005 to get on our email list. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Rebels With A Cause Heads for the finish line

Kelly-Yamamoto Productions and KRCB Public Media are closing in on the completion of Rebels With A Cause (formerly known as Moments In Time). This important documentary, relating the incredible story of the creation of Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area, has been in the works for a number of years; we now anticipate it will be completed in September (this year!). Recent fundraising support from Susie Tompkins Buell and Mark Buell has inspired a number of other individuals and foundations to support that goal and we thank them. Dear Member, As we continue the rollout of our Health Connections Initiative, you will begin to appreciate one of the central points which the KRCB programming, local and national, will seek to drive home: The factors influencing your health are far deeper than the number of hospitals in your town or specialists in your county. Often called the social determinants of health, these factors dont automatically leap to our lips as we work to improve the health of our community. They should. For example, high school graduation rates correlate very strongly with life expectancy. Poverty, not surprisingly, is also strongly correlated. Dr. Anthony Iton of the California Endowment famously says that we can predict the length of your life by your zip code. Equally unsurprising, nutrition and exercise are central. Although these are often viewed as individual decisions, as we study the social determinants of health, we come to understand that social and public policy have a huge influence on what choices an individual has, or doesnt have, to choose a healthy diet or to seek out a space for safe exercise. KRCB will be pushing this conversation because we all need to understand what exactly must change if we are truly and fundamentally going to improve the health of all of us. Keep watching and keep thinking. Sincerely, Nancy Dobbs President and CEO

The Age of Miracles on Word by Word Imagine what would happen if the Earth suddenly started slowing down and days and nights got longer and longer by 20 minutes or more each day. Now imagine being an eleven-year-old girl while the only reality people have known is altered on a daily basis. Your best friend escapes to the Utah desert; neighbors become hermits; birds start falling from the sky; seas rise; homes that used to be worth millions are now inhabited by crabs, sea stars and kelp, and the TV pundits blather on and on, as if afraid what will happen in the vacuum of silence. That is the premise behind Karen Thompson Walkers (pictured)provocative debut novel, The Age of Miracles. Join host Gil Mansergh for a fascinating conversation with Karen Thompson Walker about her gem of a novel on Word By Word, Wednesday August 1 at 7 pm. WordTemple features F. D. Reeve & Kathleen Winter Poet and writer F. D. Health Care Innovation in California t

By some estimates, every dollar spent on prevention today could yield savings of more than 5 dollars in future health care costs. An Ounce of Prevention chronicles stories from across the state (and the border) of people who are finding innovative ways to invest in prevention. Whether its an international collaboration between San Diego and Tijuana to combat tuberculosis, a onestop clinic in rural northern California serving an isolated population, a one-on-one urban program steering youth away from violence, or a hospital based advocate finding patients alternatives to the ER, these are health care heroes, each following a different path toward the same goal of healthier communities. This community health documentary provides an unflinching, on-the-ground exploration of how health care professionals are using prevention strategies to help build healthier communities. Keeping Score 13 Days When Music Changed Forever

This series is about musical revolutionsabout the composers, compositions, and musical movements that changed the way people heard, or thought about, music. Each program explores the historical backdrop and the musical precursors to the revolutionary change, as well as the lasting influence of that moment in music history. Each hour includes musical excerpts mixed with commentary from the host, pop icon Suzanne Vega, as well as interviews with composers, musicologists, writers, and musicians, notably Michael Tilson Thomas, Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. August 5 The Launch of the First Ring cycle at Bayreuth: August 13, 1876 A program about the danger and appeal of Wagners full-immersion mythology and why the composer was so important, even to those who hated him. August 12 The Opening Day of the Exposition Universelle in Paris: May 6, 1889 The Exposition Universelle was where Debussy first heard gamelan music, and world music became a part of Western European classical language. Composers before and after Debussy frequently turned to vernacular sources for inspiration, whether Brahms, Mahler, and Bartk incorporating folk melodies, Copland and Gershwin using the rhythms of Latin dance, or Steve Reich quoting West African drumming. August 19 The Premiere of Elektra: January 25, 1909 Elektra is Richard Strausss farthest out work, perhaps the only piece from the days of early modernism that retains its ability to shock today. August 26 The Premiere of The Rite of Spring: May 29, 1913 Stravinskys completely original instrumentation and rhythms, and his use of dissonance, have made this work one of the most important of the 20th century, not to mention the riot and ensuing scandal that caused this Paris premiere to be one of the most shocking in all of performance history. Carbon, Growth, and Water Discussed on Climate One

August 2 Story Wars The lead character in the story of carbon is a gas that is invisible and has no smell. While human creation of carbon pollution may be hitting closer to home faster than many think, there is still a dearth of compelling narratives about how climate disruption affects the lives of average people. What do ancient myths, the axioms of Madison Avenue and behavioral sciences have to do with communicating the risks of Americas addiction to fossil fuels? Join us for an interdisciplinary discussion of the survival story of our times. August 9 The Great Disruption Growth as weve known it is over, say Paul Gilding and Richard Heinberg (pictured.) The idea that we can keep on growing the economy up against the physical limits of the Earthwater, oil, and landis not physically possible, says Gilding, author of The Great Disruption. Were in a trap really. If we grow the economy, then well hit those limits again. If we dont grow the economy, were going to drown in debt. Heinberg, author of The End of Growth, adds, I dont think well ever see growth the way we experienced during the decades of the 20th century. We have to create an economy that exists within natures limits. August 16 Water World Wild weather and growing population are increasing stress on global fresh water supplies. Scientists project more extremes of both too much water in some places and other times, not enough. A panel of speakers discuss water stewardship in the United States and what we can learn from other countries. August 23 Ted Danson: Our Endangered Oceans Actor Ted Danson went to Santa Monica beach with his daughter one day and encountered a sign that read, Water polluted, no swimming. Trying to explain that to my kid was hard, he says. He later became involved in a movement to prevent digging for oil wells in Santa Monica and eventually helped create Oceana, the largest international organization focused on ocean conservation. Join us for a conversation about oil and fish, carbon and coral, and what can be done to protect the natural economic value of our seas. August 30 Power Poll Do Americans consider the environment and clean energy when they vote for politicians? Conventional thinking says even environmentalists cast ballots based on the economy and delivery of government services that directly affect their lives. That explains why some politicians privately acknowledge concern about the changing climate but dont utter the word in public. Climate One convenes three experts on energy and public opinion to look at the public attitudes underneath the debate about Americas energy future. Thursdays at 7 pm

A message from Membership

Did you know that you dont have to wait for a membership drive to continue or enhance your relationship with KRCB? You are always welcome to contact us at 707-584-2018 or join us online at www.krcb.org. Membership is by far our largest and most reliable source of revenue and your continued association with KRCB truly does make a difference. The funding you provide makes possible all the wonderful programming youve come to expect and appreciate on KRCB. Thank you so much for being a part of our KRCB family.

Volunteer of the Month Greg Miraglia

What is a community? Traditionally we think of our neighborhood as being our community, but due to the Internet our sense of community has greatly expanded. Often the community we experience on the web is one that gives us an identity and the strength to be who we are. I thought of this when talking with Greg Miraglia, our August Volunteer of the Month. Greg is an important contributor to KRCB-FMs Outbeat Radio team. Outbeat is a weekly radio hour for and about the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender community in the North Bay and beyond. It airs Sunday nights at 8 p.m. on Radio 91. Gregs first experience with KRCB was in 2008 when he was interviewed on the program as the author of Coming Out From Behind The Badge, his book about his 27 years experience in law enforcement. Greg immediately asked how he could be involved in Outbeat and before long he had his own news program: Outbeat Now (airing the fourth Sunday of each month). Greg also started Outbeat Youth (also on the fourth Sunday) which reaches out to the LGBT youth community. When I discovered that the Outbeat Youth Facebook page had over 2000 likes, I realized that Gregs volunteer efforts reach far beyond Sonoma County. Outbeat is a community resource in the largest sense of community. As we finished our conversation, Greg wanted to convey to readers this message: If you have a story and a voice, we want to hear it. Thank you, Greg, for telling your story and providing the opportunity for so many others to be a part of the community. You can learn more about Outbeat Radio and listen to archived programs at outbeatradio.org If you would like to learn more abut volunteering at KRCB give Cheryl Scholar, Volunteer Manager, a call at 707-584-2005 or email at cheryl_scholar@krcb.org

According to the latest Roper Public Affairs and Media survey, the American public has rated PBS the most educational media brand and the undisputed leader in childrens programming. (University of Pennsyvania Annenberg School for Communiction) PBS KIDS offers nine literacy series and 15 series on science, technology, engineering, and math. PBSKIDSPlay.org was named the winner of the 2009 Teachers Choice Awards for the family.
