    Despitethis,inRuhrfestspielhausRecklinghausenveryclearthatchambermusicisveryexcitingwhenevermeettwodistinct characters.Whoisbotheredthattheywereapartsometimes,whensomethingreallyshouldbetogether.Sometimeseven veryfartolookmuchthechords.Buttheyremainintheirextremelyintenseslowmovements. Elapsedlove Eschenbachwasformerlyknownasaverylyricalpianist,Bartoisstillthere.WhetherinSchumann's"Studiesforpedalpiano" inthelovelyeditingbyDebussy,Schubert'sFantasyinFminor,orwherethesubjectBartoplayedsoravishinglytenderand plaintive.Sometimesitseemedasiftheoldermentellinatouchingwayofbygonelove. Quartertonetuning Whenitcametoletlooseintoxicatingeffect,however,theywerecontrolledandrestrained.Thisisespeciallynoticedinthe Sonata,Op34bofBrahms,aswellastiedtotheslowmovement.InIves'threequartertonepieces,theytooktheunusual effectofthecolorsensitivemoodmorethantherhythmicforceofthefinalpiece. PatricioSilvaisthecurrentwinnerofthe"BartoPrize".Anannualcompositioncompetition,inwhichthepianomusicmust relatetopoems.Tothe"Threemovementsforpiano"belongingtothePortugueseFernandoPessoapoems,however, remainedhidden.Thesecondmovementplaysasensualwaywithlayersofsound,theothertwomotorradiateenergy. Prokofievwouldhavebeenfun,butBartowascompletelyinhiselement.
