The program will provide a value-added experience to your academic studies and widen your horizons.

MAINTAINING yOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS AND EMPLOyMENT Full-Time Student Status As an undergraduate international student, you must remain a full-time student for at least two semesters during an academic year. Doctoral students must be full-time in each semester; master students must be full-time in the Fall and Winter semesters, and at least part-time in the Spring/Summer semester. Failure to enrol as a full-time student is a violation of your immigration status. To be a full-time undergraduate student, you need to take at least 9 class credits during both the Fall and Winter semesters. This means you must be registered for at least three classes each Fall and Winter semester.

Valid Documents To maintain your immigration status, you must ensure that your passport and Study Permit remain valid throughout your stay in Canada. You must keep your passport valid at all times. If both your Study Permit and passport are soon to expire, contact the Student Services & Study Abroad Office to assist you with the renewal process. Extension of Study Permit or Changing the Conditions Always carefully read the expiration dates, conditions, and remarks on your immigration documents. If you need to extend your Study Permit or change the conditions, apply as soon as possible. We advise you to avoid travelling outside Canada while your documents are being processed. You should apply to renew the status of your immigration documents at least 90 days prior to expiration since this renewal process can take up to 90 days. If you require assistance with this application process, contact our Life Skills Advisors.

Be aware that failure to renew your immigration documents will result in fines and/or deportation. Temporary Resident Visa There are two types of Temporary Resident Visas: (1) a single-entry visa, and (2) a multiple-entry visa. Whether single or multipleentry, a Temporary Resident Visa is valid for a defined period of time. You cannot use a visa after its expiration date. To renew your Temporary Resident Visa while you are in Canada, contact the Student Services & Study Abroad Office for further assistance. Work Permit and Student Employment Do not work without Work Authorization. International students are permitted to work outside of the U of R only with a valid Off-Campus Work Permit (OCWP). Working without authorization is a deportable offence.

10

Working on Campus International students with a valid Study Permit do not require an off-campus work permit to work on campus. You can look for part-time employment on campus as long as you are a full-time student in a degree or diploma program and hold a valid Study Permit. Before you seek employment, make sure that you meet all the requirements. On-campus employment is defined as work in facilities owned, leased, or rented by the U of R. Your employer may be the University, a student organization, or a private contractor operating within the boundaries of the campus. If this does not apply, you must obtain an Off-Campus Work Permit. Off-Campus Work Permit International students can apply for an Off-Campus Work Permit (OCWP) if they have attended a Canadian post-secondary institution full-time and for at least six of the last 12 months before the date of application if they meet all requirements.

Post-Graduation Work Permit The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows you to gain valuable Canadian work experience after you have completed your studies in Canada. This may also assist you if you wish to apply to become a permanent resident of Canada. To qualify, you must have graduated from a public or private post-secondary institution that grants degrees recognized by the province or territory. You must apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit within 90 days of receiving written confirmation from the U of R that you have met the requirements for completing your academic program. Please visit our website for more information at http://www.uregina. ca/international/.

Co-op Work Permit Students are encouraged to pursue work experience while studying. International students can join the Co-operative Education and Internships Program and apply for a Coop Work Permit (COWP) to gain related work experience off campus. Visit http://www. uregina.ca/coop/ for more information. Social Insurance Number A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a number issued in Canada to administer various government programs. You are required to have a SIN to work in Canada. To apply for a SIN, you need a valid Study Permit and an Off-Campus Work Permit, or an on-campus job offer. For further information, please refer to http://www.servicecanada. gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/.
