At the age of 36, just 3 days after
completing my Accounting Degree
at Oakland University, I put on a
new sui t and ti e, drove to
Southfield and walked into a
mirrored elevator for a trip to the
5th floor of a building that housed
over 100 accountants and at that
moment, I realized I was one of
them. Im quite certain I was
l aughi ng al l the way up the
elevator and there was a giant smile on my face for a
least 6 months straight!
I was incredibly excited and nothing was going to stop
me from continuing the education I started 3 years earlier.
I volunteered for every extra duty I could and set out to
become not just a great accountant, but a well-rounded
business advisor. I became an expert in computer software
utilization and developed a keen sense for identifying when
numbers just didnt look right. That sense led to my
first job in the private sector. While working with a client,
I picked up on some numbers that seemed off and within
a few days, I had uncovered a large embezzlement by
the companys controller. After nearly 5 years at the
accounting firm, my client made me an offer I couldnt
refuse and I joined the private sector as a corporate
controller.
