eople rely on fire and smoke

detectors to help keep them
safe in their homes. Though
fire and smoke alarms are effec-
tive, a firm fire safety plan that
will keep everyone calm should a
fire occur could mean the differ-
ence between life and death.
The U.S. Fire Administra
tion says that more than 3,500
Americans die each year in fires,
while roughly 18,300 more men,
women, and children are injured
each year. Cooking accounts for
the greatest percentage of residen-
tial fires, followed by arson. Dryer
vent fires are also a big concern.
FEMA says that smoke, rather
than the fire's flames, is responsi-
ble for 75 percent of all deaths by
fire.
In addition to physical injury
and material damage, fires can
cause a host of other problems.
Psychological distress, monetary
damages, and loss of pets may
come with fires. Loss of irreplace-
able personal items is also a con-
cern. Although fires can be dev-
astating, they're also highly pre-
ventable, and smoke alarms and
a home fire safety plan are two
precautionary measures every-
one should take.
Creating an evacuation plan
doesn't have to be complicated.
Such a plan can be established
in a few minutes and then rein-
forced through practice every so
often to keep everyone fresh on
what to do.
Begin by assessing the layout
of the home. Figure out the two
best exits from the home.
If your home doesn't have two
doors, invest in a fire ladder so
that one of the windows can be a
point of exit.
Know how to gain access to the
exits, including the best path to
take to avoid injury. It's a good
idea to consider a few different
scenarios. A kitchen adjacent to
the upstairs staircase may become
engulfed in flames and make exit
by way of staircase impossible. Just
because you have doors to the out-
side doesn't mean they'll present
the best type of exit.
Sketch out the layout of the
home and the escape plan. Smoke
can make it difficult to know up
from down. Be sure everyone can
reach the exits even if vision is
obstructed. Try it with your eyes
closed.
Check fire alarms routinely, and
change batteries at least every
year.
Make sure windows can be easily
opened if they are an exit point.
Make note of who will be help-
ing children or the elderly out of
the home.
Establish a place where the fam-
ily will meet outdoors. This area
should be far enough away from
the home so that everyone will be
safe from smoke, flames and falling
debris. Fires may ignite fuel explo-
sions, so be sure the meeting spot
Establish a home fire safety plan
Keeping family members safe from fire involves establishing a fire safety plan.

HAVE YOU TRIED
THE DRS SYSTEM?
Treatment of
herniated and
degenerative discs
without surgery.
I
f you dont have an IRA, I
can only think of a few
reasons why you dont.
First, maybe you couldnt
afford to fund one each year.
Or the opposite, you made
too much money and you par-
ticipated in an employer-
based retirement plan, ren-
dering you ineligible for an
IRA. Perhaps you didnt want
to tie up your money until age
59 , or you really didnt
need the tax deduction. A
Roth IRA would be a good
alternative if you were to
forgo the deduction, still
allowing you to enjoy the tax-
deferred growth with no
mandatory distribution at age
70. There are Spousal IRAs
and Spousal Roth IRAs, and
in the past some people took
advantage of Educational
IRAs. Maybe you rolled-over
your 401K plan into an IRA,
aptly named a Rollover IRA.
Maybe someone died and left
you an inherited IRA? Some
self-employed people and
their employees take part in a
SEP (Simplified Employee
Pension) IRA or a SAR
(Salary Reduction) SEP IRA.
The bottom line is that IRA
is an abbreviation for
Individual Retirement
Account and as the headline
asks, if you have one, why not
a JRA?
Id like to examine the
question a little further,
assuming that the IRA holder
is married. What happens to
your IRA after you die? If you
leave it to your spouse, he or
she can roll it over into his or
her own IRA if the decedent
is under 70 . If the mini-
mum distributions were
already initiated, the surviv-
ing spouse would roll it into
an Inherited IRA and contin-
ue taking the minimum
required distributions. If left
to a child, then the term
Stretch IRA comes into
effect, allowing taxes to be
postponed while the mini-
mum distributions continue
with the childs life expectan-
cy calculation. Of course, that
child gets to name its own
beneficiary for the IRA and if
it is to its own child, the IRA
can be stretched-out over the
next generation, as well.
However, in my 31 years in
this business, I cant remem-
ber a single child stretching
the IRA to the grandchildren
of the original owner. No,
outside of the spouses, the
kids usually cash-out the IRA
and pay the taxes because
they have their own bills, car
payments, mortgages, or col-
lege tuition for their own
children to pay for.
But, might there be a
better way to handle your
IRA? Answer: Yes! Why not
modify your IRA into a
JRA? Thats right; modify
your Individual Retirement
Account into a Joint
Retirement Account as soon
as possible! Let me explain
Your IRA doesnt need to pro-
vide benefits to only you, the
account holder. Lets think
about this for a moment.
What would happen to you or
your spouse if he or she sur-
vived you and your IRA was
exhausted? It appears to me
that you might be out of
income before youve even
died and your spouse would
definitely be out of income
after your death, regardless of
his or her longevity!
But wait. If you could
guarantee that the income
would never run dry or be
diminished in any way for the
rest of your life and your
spouses lifetime, in essence
youve just created a JRA!
Thats right one IRA and
two incomes guaranteed for
both the husbands and wifes
entire lifetimes! So the hus-
bands IRA could be protect-
ed for the wifes ultimate ben-
efit and the wifes IRA could
be protected for the husbands
lifetime benefit, simultane-
ously! This is particularly
attractive when one spouses
IRA is significantly larger
than the others IRA. Imagine
creating a pension-like
income for joint lives from a
single IRA, while still retain-
ing access to the principal!
Everyone needs to learn how
to do this!
And there is more! Lets
assume that the husband
worked for 40 years, amassing
a $1 million IRA while his
wife worked in the home rais-
ing their children so she
never had the chance to build
a large IRA for herself. With a
stroke of the pen on the prop-
er document, both husband
and wife would be guaranteed
a lifetime of income that
would never be exhausted!
Further, one program exists in
the marketplace today that
states if either spouse entered
a nursing home, the income
that was guaranteed for life
would simply double! Thats
right! 4.5 percent for life
becomes 9 percent if either
party enters a nursing home.
When they return to their
own home, or unfortunately
the funeral home, the month-
ly check reverts back to the
4.5 percent minimum amount
that was guaranteed for life
initially until, when and if,
the surviving spouse enters a
nursing home and the income
jumps back up to double
again!
So you see, if you have
an old style IRA, you need to
examine the features and ben-
efits of upgrading to a JRA! If
you would like to explore this
concept further, please call
my office for a no cost or obli-
gation appointment and an
opportunity for us to shake
hands. It is my belief that
everyone needs to examine
the possibilities of upgrading
his or her IRA to a JRA
before its too late!
Guarantees based on the
claims-paying ability of the
insurance company selected.

Do you have an IRA? If so, why not a JRA? By Mark Charnet

R
ecently a patient
referred me to Dr.
Michael F. Roizen,
MD, who wrote a book called
Real Age. The book provides
insight into how to calculate
ones lifespan according to
lifestyle, eating, exercising, etc.
The Centers for Disease
Control conducted a study at
Emory University that showed
that people with gingivitis
(bleeding, swollen, or inflamed
gums) and periodontitis (gum
disease that causes loss of jaw-
bone around teeth) had a 23 to
46 percent higher mortality
rate than those who did not
have these problems. These
conditions are linked to
increased rates of cardiovascu-
lar disease, stroke, and infec-
tions.
Dr. Roizens book states:
Flossing your teeth can make
your arteries stronger and helps
keep your immune system
young. The same bacteria that
cause gum disease also trigger
the immune response
inflammation that causes
arteries to swell. The swelling
of arteries results in constric-
tion (narrowing) and decreased
blood flow that in turn leads to
cardiovascular disease. Other
studies have shown that gum
disease leads to higher white
blood cell counts, indicating
that the immune system is
under high stress. Poor oral
hygiene and increased tooth
loss are important signs of this
risk. It is calculated that lifes-
pan can increase by over six
years by maintaining oral
hygiene!
An estimated 80 percent
of the U.S. population has
some form of gum disease, from
gingivitis to advanced peri-
odontal disease. So, one of the
keys to longevity is to floss
more often. In addition, it is
recommended to get a dental
cleaning at least every six
months!
Incidentally, according to
Dr. Roizen, men who have reg-
ular sex, a happy monogamous
heterosexual relationship, and
who eat plenty (not overeat-
ing) of pizza, marinara sauce,
and spaghetti can add an addi-
tional five years to their lives.
Just floss after eating and don't
smoke after sex.

etween the Health
Care Reform being
upheld by the Supreme
Court and the Bush tax cuts
set to expire on December 31,
2012 we are looking at higher
taxes in 2013.
Here are some significant
changes coming our way.
Nearly all tax brackets will be
increasing. The lowest bracket
from 10% to 15%. The highest
bracket from 35% to 39.6%.
Additional 0.9% Medicare
surtax on earned income for tax-
payers with income as follows:
Single income over
$200,000
Married Filing Joint - income
over $250,000
Married Filing Separately
income over $125,000
Additional 3.8% Medicare
surtax on investment income
for individuals with income
above the same thresholds listed
above.
Investment income includes
interest, dividends, capital
gains, rental and royalty
income, passive income, and net
gain over $250,000 for single
taxpayers or $500,000 for mar-
ried taxpayers filing jointly of
qualified personal residence.
(The IRS will issue more guid-
ance on specifically what income
is included.)
Preferential tax rates on
Dividends eliminated. In 2012
individuals in the 10 and 15%
tax bracket are taxed at 0%.
Taxpayers in the 25% bracket
and higher are taxed at 15%.
Starting in 2013 taxpayers will
pay from 10% to 39.6% on div-
idends, whatever tax bracket
they are in that is the tax rate
they will pay on their dividends.
Long Term Capital Gains Tax
Rates will increase to from 15 to
20%.
The floor for deducting
Medical expenses will increase
from 7.5% of your Adjusted
Gross Income to 10%. This
wont apply to seniors 65 and
older until 2017.
The federally subsidized drug
plan costs for retirees will be non
deductible.
Health Spending Accounts will
be capped at $2500.
Starting in 2014 individuals
who do not have health coverage
will owe a penalty tax anywhere
from $95 to $285 in 2014. But
in 2016 the penalty increases to
as much as $2085.
Businesses with more than 50
employees will have to provide at
least minimum essential health
coverage beginning after
December 31, 2013 or they will
be subject to an excise tax of
$2000 per employee, and the
tax is not deductible.
Federal Estate Tax is currently
at five million dollars but set to
revert back to one million on
January 1, 2013. Also the
Estate tax Rate will increase
from 35% to 55%.
To prepare for the 2013
income tax increases you
might want to shift expected
2013 income into 2012, so
the money can be taxed at
todays lower rates. For exam-
ple, if you were expecting a
bonus early 2013, you may ask
for it to be paid a few weeks
earlier at the end of 2012.
Traditionally, taxpayers
are encouraged to maximize
their deductible expenses at
the end of the year. However
in order to reduce their tax-
able 2013 in might make
sense to hold off on some
deductions this year and save
them for 2013. For example
many people make charitable
contributions at the end of
the year or make their January
mortgage payment in
December. It may make sense
not to do this year so you can
use the deductions for 2012.
It is doubtful that any
significant tax legislation will
get signed into law until after
the November elections. The
current administration wants
to extend the tax cuts to tax-
payers with income less than

program, and enrollment has
already doubled compared
with last summer.
The camps first session,
themed Animal Adven-
ture, was held this past
week. The campers were
divided into four teams at the
beginning of the week, and
each team decided its own
animal-themed group name.
Thus, the Powerful Panthers,
the Might Mighty Lemurs,
the Blue Kangaroos, and the
Almighty Piranhas took on
the week, complete with mas-
cots made entirely of painted
cardboard boxes. The teams
provided a basis for fun, com-
petitive activities throughout
the week, including the
Friday grand finale of Camp
Olympics with lots of water
games to stay cool. Tuesday
and Thursday were spent
enjoying Graydon Pool in
Ridgewood, with lots of
swimming, shark tag, volley-
ball, and even burying some
of the counselors in the sand.
Each Wednesday is highlight-
ed by a special day trip. This
past week found the campers
at the Bronx Zoo, which was
a huge hit!
The kids were eager to
share what they love most
about Eagles Camp. When
Tobi Cummins was asked
how she liked Eagles Day
Camp, she responded with a
simple thumbs-up. Others
spoke about their favorite
activities.
I really liked playing volleyball
at the lake, said Carter Gilgen.
My favorite part of camp was
the lake, said Louis Garcia.
My favorite part about camp
was going to the Bronx Zoo
because I got to learn about ani-
mals, said Emmanuel Dyer.
My favorite part was
Greydons Pool, said EV
Cummins.
I liked being with my friends,
said Shannon Spadaro.
Eagles Day Camp is
designed to provide campers
with a variety of age-appro-
priate activities within a safe,
nurturing, and fun atmos-
phere, with an emphasis on
social, physical, and emotion-
al growth and learning. Some
campers come with friends,
but making new friends is all
part of the fun!
If you know of an ele-
mentary school-aged child
looking for a safe and unbe-
lievably fun experience this
summer, check out Eagles Day
Camps. Limited space is still
available for the last two ses-
sions: July 2327 (Carnival
Craze) and July 30August 3
(Outstanding Outdoors).

S
pencer Savings Bank, a
community bank head-
quartered in Elmwood
Park, awarded $22,500 in
scholarships this year to local,
deserving students through its
annual scholarship program
established to aid local youths
in their pursuit of higher edu-
cation. Spencer Savings Bank
recognized 30 high school and
middle school students for
their outstanding academic
achievements and educational
goals, awarding each high
school student $1,000 scholar-
ship and each middle school
student a $500 Coverdell
Education Savings Accounts
(CESA).
Since the program was
founded in 2002, Spencer
Savings Bank has awarded a
total of $248,000 in scholar-
ships to youths in the commu-
nities it serves. This year,
Spencer Savings Banks
$22,500 scholarship fund was
divided among 15 high school
students and 15 middle school
students located within the
banks communities. The
recipients were selected based
upon their academic record,
history of community service,
and future interest in a career
in business, finance, or bank-
ing.
Working extremely hard
throughout the year toward
significant academic achieve-
ments, these 30 local students
have proved themselves very
deserving of the scholarship
award, said Jos B. Guerrero,
president, chairman and CEO
of Spencer Savings Bank. At
Spencer Savings Bank, we
strongly believe in investing
back into the communities we
serve, and we are proud to rec-
ognize the academic accom-
plishments of local students
from our communities by sup-
porting their future endeavors
with our scholarship award.
Centered on generating
growth through reinvestment
of local deposits into the com-
munity, Spencer Savings Bank
proudly supports local busi-
ness and workforce initiatives,
civic groups, charitable organ-
izations, youth programs, and
other community-focused
organizations.

Children should be instructed
to run to the meeting spot
immediately without waiting
behind for anyone to catch up.
No one should re-enter the
home after arriving at the meet-
ing spot.
Do a few practice runs so
everyone will be accustomed to
getting out quickly.
While in most cases it is better
to escape and let the fire
department extinguish a fire, in
the event of a small fire, occu-
pants may be able to stanch it
with a personal fire extinguish-
er. Follow the acronym PASS
to properly put out the fire:
PULL the pin in the extin-
guisher.
AIM the nozzle or hose at the
base of the flames.
SQUEEZE the trigger.
SWEEP the foam across the fire
base; do not just aim in one
place.
Fire safety is very impor-
tant. In conjunction with
smoke alarms, a fire safety plan
can help everyone get out alive.
X
ylitol is a sugar alco-
hol that is commonly
used as an artificial
sweetener and is created from
birch, raspberries, plums and
corn. Xylitol is similar in
sweetness to sugar but half
the calories and with-
out the common
effects of sugar such as
dental cavities and
diabetes. Therefore,
this sweetener is
found in many human
sugar free products,
such as gum, candies
or other sweets. In
humans, this additive
has no serious side
effects but in dogs,
ingestion could be
fatal. Xylitol has also
been suspected of
causing toxicity in ferrets.
Xylitol toxicity is one of
the newer culprits for toxic
episodes in our dogs. A com-
mon scenario is finding your
pooch stealing a pack of
sugar free gum. While previ-
ously it was thought that
only large concentrations of
xylitol could result in prob-
lems, this may no longer be
the case. Just a few sticks of
gum ingested by a small dog
could cause severe problems.
The main and initial
toxic event in dogs with xyl-
itol ingestion is hypo-
glycemia (low blood sugar).
What the xylitol does is
cause a rapid release of the
hormone insulin, resulting in
a sudden decrease in blood
glucose. There also appears
to be a strong link between
xylitol ingestions and the
development of liver failure
in dogs, which can develop
after the initial toxic phase.
Signs of toxicity can be
seen as quickly as 30 minutes
after xylitol ingestion. You
may see clinical signs of
hypoglycemia such as: vomit-
ing, weakness, ataxia or
uncoordinated movements,
depression, seizures, coma,
and later, liver dysfunction
and/or failure. Your dog
could also see problems from
ingesting just small amounts
of xylitol. Therefore do not
base toxicity on see-
ing clinical signs in a
half hour. You may
not be in the clear
because with smaller
concentrations of
xylitol, the onset of
clinical signs could
be delayed as much
as 12 hours after
ingestion.
Since these signs can
develop quite rapidly it is
crucial that pet owners
seek veterinary treatment
immediately or contact the
Animal Poison Control
Center. If it is soon after
your pet has eaten a xylitol-
containing sweet or food
and before clinical signs
develop, your veterinarian
may advise inducing vomit-
ing to expel the toxin and
supportive care to monitor
and treat the resultant low
blood glucose and possible
low potassium levels.
Prevention is very
important. Therefore be
especially diligent in keeping
candy, gum or other foods
containing xylitol out of the
reach of pets. As with any
potentially toxic substance,
should accidental exposures
occur, be sure to contact your
veterinarian or Animal
Poison Control for immedi-
ate assistance.

I
nsects have long been a
nuisance at outdoor gath-
erings. A barbecue, picnic
or even a visit to the park can
quickly grow uncomfortable
when insects buzz and bite. It
may take minutes to hours
before you see the telltale signs
of an insect bite, including
welts and redness. You may be
left wondering what flew in
under the radar. It could be
no-see-ums.
Many of the insect bites
you will receive come from
visible mosquitoes of different
varieties. Theyre attracted to
sweat or exhaled breath.
Females who need a blood
meal to produce eggs use peo-
ple and other animals as
their source of nourishment.
Although mosquitoes can be
problematic, very small
insects, aptly dubbed no-see-
ums could pack a more pow-
erful bite. Often-times, people
are unaware theyve been vic-
timized by a no-see-um until
their skin has already grown
irritated.
No-see-um is actually an
umbrella term given to very
small biting insects, namely
biting midges and sand flies.
These insects are part of the
order Diptera and families
Ceratopogonidae and Phleb-
otomidae, respectively. Al-
though sand flies and biting
midges are not the same
insect, their small stature and
similar likeness for feeding on
blood have inadvertently
grouped them together. No-
see-ums are also called
punkies, most notably the
sand fly variety. Punkies may
carry disease and viruses.
No-see-ums are common-
ly found along seashores, rivers
and lakes. They are attracted
by similar markers as mosqui-
toes, in-cluding octenol,
which is found in human
breath. Traps containing
octenol liquid can be used to
attract and kill no-see-ums,
and many bug repellents can
help keep these bugs away
from the skin.
Adult biting midges are
usually most active between
dawn and dusk; they will
remain inactive through very
windy weather, finding shelter
amongst vegetation. They usu-
ally stick close to their breed-
ing sites. Many no-see-ums
attack in large numbers, biting
on any areas of exposed skin,
most notably the face, scalp,
hands and legs. The bites can
cause acute discomfort, irrita-
tion and severe local reactions,
according to the Department
of Medical Entomology in
Wentworthville, NSW, Aust-
ralia. Bites may cause swelling
and extreme itching. Sensitive
individuals may experience
symptoms for several days to
weeks.

Although there is no
exact method to controlling
no-see-ums, they do lay their
eggs and breed larvae in stand-
ing water, much like mosqui-
toes. So keep stagnant water
clear of your property. You can
also avoid going outside at
dawn or dusk. If you must go
outside, wear repellent or long
sleeves and pants. Individuals
who experience severe reac-
tions to midge bites should
keep an antihistamine prod-
uct, such as Benadryl, on hand
for allergic reactions. In addi-
tion, keep a topical anti-itch
cream, like Cortizone, around
to be safe.
No-see-ums may be
small, but they can certainly
inflict powerful bites and be
quite a nuisance outdoors.

essert makes the per-
fect finishing touch to
a special event. Hosts
and hostesses frequently fret
over which foods to
serve at their parties,
and that includes
dessert.
But hosts wont
need a professional
pastry chef to serve
some imaginative and
impressive desserts. In
fact, it's easy for even
novice foodies to make
their own delicious
desserts.
Invest in a star deco-
rators tip and pastry
bag. Theres no limit to
what you can do with a
simple pastry bag, icing
and a decorative tip.
Instead of slathering
frosting on cupcakes,
use the tip to pipe on
individual stars or swirls
so the cupcakes look
dressed up. The same
concept can be applied when
baking a cake in a molded pan
and when piping on the frost-
ing to create a design. You can
also use it to add a dab of home-
made whipped cream to a serv-
ing plate aside a slice of pie.
Get creative with your pastry
tip and explore different possi-
bilities.
Make more garnish sauces.
Professional chefs understand
that many people eat with
their eyes. That means guests
may be more inclined
to ooh and ahh over
desserts if they are pre-
sented in a special way.
Take a cue from restau-
rants and garnish the
plate prior to adding
the dessert. Create sim-
ple sauces from cooked-
down strawberries or
raspberries with sugar
and water. Or look to
premade syrups. Grab
that bottle of chocolate
sauce and create a
design on a dish and
then place the dessert
on top.
Use leaves or flowers.
In addition to sauces on
the plate, you may want
to add a few mint leaves
or an edible flower to
cleanse the palate. This
adds a touch of class to
the presentation and makes
guests feel special.

I
m always on the lookout
for good food. Sometimes I
can find it right in my
neighborhood, while other
times it requires a bit of travel.
But frankly, as long as the food
is up to par, a few extra miles
means nothing to me. Thats
why when I was contacted by
Brix Tapas Bar & Grill in
Belleville, I had no problem
jumping on the Parkway to
experience its unique style of
dining.
As its name would sug-
gest, Brix Tapas Bar & Grill is
centered around the classically
Spanish method of dining
called tapas. Designed to
encourage conversation, tapas
are small portions of delicious
foods prepared in such a way
that would make it easy for din-
ner guests to move around and
fellowship without the incon-
venience of a full plate of food.
Playing on this classic style,
Brix has enhanced the idea of
tapas and created a menu with
both large and small portioned
dishes whose outstanding fla-
vors encourage conversation of
their own.
Appetizers come in a sim-
ilar form to that of classic tapas
and include a wide array of
Italian, Spanish, and American
varieties. Our table was served
a mixture of mozzarella in car-
rozza (essentially a fried moz-
zarella sandwich), stuffed clams
oreganata, a Spanish take on
rice balls, and the ever-popular
coconut shrimp. Each had its
own taste unique to others of its
kind. The rice balls were a deli-
cious surprise to me, made with
Spanish rice and peppers rather
than the mozzarella and ground
beef Im used to. I found the
consistency of the yellow rice
to be an excellent replacement
for white rice and very well
suited to the dish. The starters
were truly a fantastic beginning
to our meal, and frankly, it was
all I could do not to fill up!
As dishes were cleared
they were replaced by larger
entre dishes. The Brix menu
features staples including pasta,
pizza, chicken, and steak that
are like the appetizers
brought into a unique light.
Coming from an Italian family,
we know Bolognese sauce. We
know it to a degree that we
would almost never order it
outside moms kitchen. Well, I
took a leap of faith that day and
was floored by the integrity of
the sauce. Im not saying mom
has competition necessarily,
but she ought to watch out
because Brix does it right!
What really impressed
me, however, was the fig pizza.
Rather than a tomato based
pizza sauce, Brix uses a home-
made creamy fig paste as a base
sprinkled with caramelized
onions and Gorgonzola cheese
to make a pizza more exquisite
than I have ever tasted before.
The fig pizza is truly the cham-
pion of Brix Tapas Bar & Grill
and most certainly worth the
drive! Also offered is full serv-
ice bar with tap and micro
beers, along with fine wine and
cocktails.
Brix Tapas Bar & Grill is
located at 371 Franklin Ave. in
Belleville. Call the restaurant
for more information: 973-751-
7001. Come and experience a
warm, friendly ambiance where
the conversation flows and the
food is fabulous.

Create individual servings.
A dessert served in an indi-
vidual ramekin or tin can be
a nice presentation in itself.
Plus, guests may feel like you
individually created each
dessert with them in mind.
Individual servings look and
serve well, rather than hav-
ing a larger dessert demol-
ished by slices or scoops.
Go for the wow factor.
Certain desserts lend them-
selves to dramatic display.
Crme brulee or flamb
desserts will catch attention.
Simply lighting a meringue-
topped pudding on fire for a
few minutes also can create a
memorable moment. Use a
good-quality liqueur for fire-
enhanced desserts, so the
alcohol can burn off quickly
and evenly.
Embrace the use of fondant
or gum paste. These pastry
art materials are frequently
used by professional pastry
chefs: moldable dough made
out of sugar. Fondant can be
rolled to cover cakes, cut to
turn into intricate shapes or
hand-molded to be turned
into figurines or other edible
pieces. Just about any dessert
can be enhanced with a fon-
dant trinket. Make a flower
or a heart out of fondant and
lay it aside a slice of cake.
Give in to a childs sense of
whimsy by molding edible
cartoon characters for them
to enjoy at a birthday party.
Fondant-covered petit fours
are also delicious and eye-
catching.
Use cookie cutters to create
different shapes. Instead of a
standard layer cake, use
cookie cutters to cut out
cake pieces and then layer
them with frosting in
between. Think about bak-
ing a pie and cutting out a
piece of the pre-baked top
crust with a cookie cutter
that gives a clue to the filling
inside (i.e., an apple cutout
for an apple pie). Place on
top of the crust before bak-
ing.
Creating special desserts
doesnt require much effort
or any specialized skills.

Mothers with infants and
young toddlers have always
been challenged to find a
way to get back in shape
while focusing on the
demands of new mother-
hood. Mommy and Me
Fitness classes let Mom keep
Baby within arms reach so
there is no need to worry
about finding a sitter or mak-
ing the time away from Baby
to work out. The Stroll Fit
program is developed with
the needs of both moms and
babies in mind. Each 60-
minute class consists of car-
diovascular, strength, and
flexibility training for a total
body workout. The classes
also provide a great environ-
ment for moms to connect
with one another and devel-
op support systems for
achieving fitness goals not
to mention bonding with
their babies! Now offered at
two locations: Wayne and
Montclair. For more informa-
tion or to attend a free class,
contact Tami Wolfe at 973-
896-4828 or e-mail tamis-
wolfe@comcast.net.
