A Tale of Two Cities: in today's NZ Herald we read about Auckland, a city where an increasing number of people need to take out short-term loans to buy groceries. And in yesterday's NZ Herald, we read about another Auckland, a city where Council has assembled a "consensus group" to figure out ways to extort more money out of ratepayers for special projects: 'The group, under the guidance of environmentalist and political activist Guy Salmon, will, among other things dine together monthly to "build relationships".' HOW OBSCENE. For shame, Councilors. For shame, Mayor Brown. "Let them eat cake."

Ben Ross For shame indeed. That $1.1 million could either shave 0.5% off our rates bill or go a long way if donated to the Auckland City Mission
Ben Ross Andy Cawston, because you have posted your status to "friends" rather than "public" I wont usually repost someone's material from FB to my blog without permission first. So may I have your permission to repost your FB post on the two NZ Herald articles at my View of Auckland blog please
George Wood It was never discussed with the rank and file councillors. Andy Cawston, at leazst I voted against the move.
Andy Cawston @George Wood -- I am glad to hear that. It is an obscene initiative that surely cannot be a good look. It must be stopped.
Stephen Maire Even if you have to consider resigning George. No more bogus spending by council. None. Austerity remember?
Andy Cawston As I see it, the issue is crystalized, and is very clear: ratepayers borrow to pay for groceries while Councilsponsored lobbyists dine. I'd rather George Wood didn't resign. He's in Council for good reasons: driving messages like this home to his Council colleagues is one of them.
