July 2012 SHELTER SHORTS is a monthly newsletter intended to keep Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter volunteers and

supporters connected. With everyones hectic schedules, we know it is often difficult, if not impossible to attend monthly meetings or to work at all of our fundraisers. Everyone is invited to submit articles for the newsletter. To do so, please call Bev at 608-326-2914 or email her at wyalusing2012@gmail.com. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Prairie du Chien City Hall. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. Please use the back door. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, August 16th.. Phoneraiser Please continue to save your old cell phones and ink jet cartridges. Drop them off at Tender Care Animal Hospital, or bring them to the monthly meeting. Thanks, Donna for taking the time to collect, sort and send the phones and cartridges in. U.S. Bones Please continue ordering cat and dog treats from USBones.com. They donate 25% of each order placed to RABAS. Dr. Donna Higgins Wildlife Photo Gallery Dr. Donna Higgins continues to support RABAS through her beautiful wildlife prints on display at her office downtown PdC. She has recently changed the format to 12x12 prints in borderless clip frames. Donna feels that these may be more affordable at $35 each. She will donate $25 to RABAS for each print she sells. These prints are absolutely beautiful. Please stop in at Dr. Donna Higgins office, downtown PdC to see them. You may be able to see them on RABAS facebook page or Donnas facebook or possibly on our website www.riversandbluffsanimalshelter.org. Kwik Trip Gas Cards Kwik Trip gas cards continue to be our easiest and most profitable fund raiser. Once again, thank you to those who have purchased the Kwik Trip Cards and have made the commitment to purchase cards from us before purchasing gasoline or any Kwik Trip products. Again, please consider purchasing these cards before filling your tank. With just a few people from this large organization utilizing the Kwik Trip Cards, we still continue to bring in approximately $500 per month. Just think what we could be doing if more members and volunteers purchased the cards before buying gas. The cards can be used for gasoline or any items sold in Kwik Trip Convenience Stores. Purchasing gas with the cards is easy you can just swipe the cards at the pump and go, thus saving time and raising money for RABAS at the same time. Other than the $8.60 shipping fee per order, there is no expense involved such as advertising. Cards will be delivered to you with a days notice by calling Bev at 326-2914 or Jill at 3264870 or by replying to this email. If you live out of town and would like to purchase the cards, we will mail them to you upon receipt of your check made payable to RABAS. Remember, we make 10% on each card sold. Cards come in increments of $25, $50 and $100. Please, help RABAS reach our goal through the purchase of these cards. Please take the time to check out our website riversandbluffsanimalshelter.org. Information on it changes sometimes daily. This website is awesome!!! Thanks, Randy for constantly updating our website. A Therapy Dogs International teams remain active in the community. On Tuesdays Kathy and Digger are at Bluff Haven. Deb and her dogs Jasmine and Sami go to Walter Schmitt Home and Paula and Maggie visit Bluff Haven. On Wednesday Bev and her dogs Vegas and Nicki will visit Moms and Tots, a program for moms and their toddlers, sponsored by PdC Rec. Dept. Dog Obedience Classes will not happen this summer. I still hope to get something going this fall. Volunteer hours will be collected by Randy P at monthly meetings or you can email your hours to Randy at repaske@gmail.com. Mississippi River Cruise to benefit RABAS will take place on Wednesday, August 22. Cost of the cruise is $25 per person. Randi and Brenda are in charge of this event. They feel that we will not need to advertise and are hoping that everyone will pass the information on the cruise out to their friends via email and Facebook. The cruise will be provided by Mississippi Explorer Cruises. The cruise will leave from the riverfront on St. Feriole Island in PdC. Boarding begins at 4:45 and we sail at 5:00. We will return at 7 p.m. Hors doeuvres will be provided. Passengers are welcome to bring their own beverages, -

alcohol is allowed. Please do not bring large coolers as space is limited. The boat is air conditioned. Our cost is $350. Please join us on Wednesday, August 22 for the river cruise. We will sail rain or shine. Also, please pass the information out to your friends and family via Facebook and email. If you would like to sail with us, please call Brenda Wilson at 608-317-7001 or Randi Kluesner at 563-873-3839. Reservation deadline is August 20. Payment can be made before boarding. Checks should be made payable to Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter (RABAS). A big thank you to Brenda and Randi for working together on this exciting new event for RABAS. Please help to make it a success. This is another easy fund raiser for most of us just show up and enjoy the evening with fellow RABAS volunteers and animal lovers. Villa Louis Carriage Classic Wine and Cheese Event Mike and Shelly Rider will donate $500 to RABAS for our help at this event on Friday, September 7. They have already paid us $200 as a down payment for our commitment to do this event. Volunteers are already in place for this fund raiser. Pounds off People and Pooches (Community Dog Walk) continues. We have a nice sized group walking this year. We meet every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. on the east side of the Villa Louis (just north of the Sculpture Park). The route is just over a mile and takes less than an hour. In addition to the physical activity, the walk provides socialization for dogs as well as their handlers. It is an enjoyable evening. Please bring poop bags and water for your dogs. Due to the extreme heat the last few weeks, I believe that the dog walk has been postponed until cooler weather returns. Zinkles Piggly Wiggly Food Stand Fund Raiser scheduled for July 14 was canceled due to the weather (it was raining in the a.m.) and rescheduled. I am not sure of the new date, but I think it may be this Saturday, July 28. Since purchasing Piggly Wiggly, Zinkles are willing to help nonprofit organizations raise money through a food stand in front of the store. They will donate $25 to purchase food to be uses in the food stand. Tammy has taken charge of this fund raiser. She has volunteers lined up to help her. Please stop in and buy a brat or hot dog from Tammy and fellow volunteers. Yappy Hour will once again be held at The Sawmill Saloon. The date is Thursday, July 26 th. Start time is 6 p.m. We will have doggie bags and ice water for the canines and chips for the humans. Once again we will play dog trivia and I have added a new game for the humans. You will just have to come to Yappy Hour to find out what the new game is. We will have a 50/50 raffle and will also have the donation jar out. Hopefully we will also be selling tickets for a raffle (if the tickets can be done in time). Bring your dog on down to The Sawmill Saloon Courtyard for an evening out. Dogs need to be leashed no flexi-leads please and dont forget poop bags. Prairie Pool Puppy Paddle will be held on Saturday, August 25th. We did not spend a lot of time discussing the dog swim. This will be our 5th annual dog swim and most of us could probably get it together in our sleep. Cost will be $10 per dog, with dogs from the same family getting in for $5. No flexileads allowed and proof of rabies and DHLPP vaccinations will be required. We will strongly suggest bordetella, but dogs will not be turned away if they do not have it. We will finalize planning at the August meeting.. Please Save the Date and plan to help. Another Planning Meeting was held on Wednesday, July 11. Those present volunteered to contact area shelters to find out how they are funded, how they started, size of building and acreage and other questions that we feel are important. Results of these questions will be discussed at the meeting this coming Wednesday, July 25. Please remember, this meeting is open to anyone interested in the future of RABAS. Meetings start at 6 p.m. and are held in the Community Room of City Hall. The group meets twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. Everyone is welcome to attend and share ideas. A raffle will soon be underway featuring a beautiful Ducks Unlimited Print, 4 tickets for a Maiden Voyage Mississippi River Cruise and a beautiful wooden bench made by Phil Dwornik. Final details need to be worked out, but I am hoping to have tickets ready for sale at Yappy Hour. Drawing will be sometime in October. Sandy Kittle, I will be calling you tomorrow about printing the tickets. Another show up and work fund raiser was suggested by Jill. She will contact Bird at Huckleberrys to see if we can do another dinner there yet this year. We discussed another pasta buffet, or possibly a chicken dinner, Swiss steak or Mexican. We will know more by the August meeting. Treasurers Report Treasurer Jill reports that as of July 19, RABAS now has $103,120.79 including $12,470.63 in our checking account and $90,650.16 in 4 different CDs. You may have noticed that this amount is about $1,600.00 less than last months total. We had more expenses this month than income. Hopefully the food stand at Dicks, Mississippi River Cruise and Prairie Pool Puppy Paddle will be

successful and we will be able to add a substantial amount to our bank accounts. Kwik Trip Gas Cards were our biggest source of income for July in the first 2 weeks of July Jill deposited $265 from sale of the KT cards. Just think what we could be doing if more people made the effort to purchase these cards from RABAS. Membership Renewals - Memberships are good for one year from the month the member joined.
