A FREE Haircut from SuperCuts in Oroville
Did you know that there will be a free
movie in the park on Friday, August 3rd?
The Oroville Downtown Business Associ-
ation will begin our sixth season of family
friendly movies with a traditional favorite,
Mary Poppins.
Theres something very special about
seeing a movie under the stars surrounded
by the trees on a big screen. Just imag-
ine Mary Poppins floating into the Banks
household and then Jane & Michael being
swept into magical romps across the Eng-
lish countryside, tea parties on the ceiling,
and madcap dances over the rooftops of
London.
There will be a different movie show-
ing each Friday night August 3rd through
August 17th. On August 3rd there will
be a preshow concert by Voodoo Ka-
zoo featuring fun/blues/rock followed by
Mary Poppins, August 10 will be Kung
Fu Panda 2, and August 17 is Journey 2
the Mysterious Island.
Free Movies in the Park Celebrates Six
Seasons in Downtown Oroville
Movies begin at sundown, between
8pm and 8:30pm, and the preshow activi-
ties will keep you entertained beginning at
6:30pm. These events are smoke & alco-
hol free. The YMCA Snack Shack will be
open before and during the show for soft
drinks, candy and popcorn.
So come and join us in our family
friendly movies for all ages at the Bicen-
tennial Park, located in Downtown Oro-
ville at 1800 Robinson Street behind the
Butte County Office of Education between
Lincoln and Huntoon Streets.
This is a smoke free and alcohol free
activity brought to the community with the
support of the downtown Oroville busi-
nesses, the Oro Dam Cruisers, City of Oro-
ville, Butte County Office of Education,
Oroville YMCA and the Chamber of Com-
merce. Please call the Oroville Chamber
of Commerce at 538-2542 for additional
information.
Will a day come when well say about
Chico what Gertrude Stein said about Oak-
land? The trouble with Oakland is that
when you get there, there isnt any there
there. Impossible here? Read on.
The Bidwell Mansion Community
Project (BMCP), in a down-to-the-finish
line struggle, raised enough money to keep
Bidwell Mansion openfor now. A tsu-
nami of post office closings threatens our
downtown post office, a major Renais-
sance-inspired landmark. The Veterans
Memorial Hall on the Esplanade may de-
cay unless repurposed. Chicos natural
treasures are endangered as well. Lack of
funding has put adequate maintenance of
Bidwell Park and the Sacramento River at
risk.
Avenue 9 Gallerys 9th annual Chico
Icons exhibit (August 3-September 1)
Chico Icons 2012: Endangered!
showcases local artists as contributors to
communal dialogue and cultural identity.
Theyve put immense skill and concentra-
tion into bringing out the beauty of our
built and natural environment to increase
awareness of what we could lose.
To commemorate this Year of the
Mansion, Avenue 9 will devote an entire
wall to a variety of artists visionsfrom
near and far, through trees and clusters of
students, at many times of day, and from
odd angles that will startle, puzzle and de-
light viewers.
The Friday, August 3 reception (5-8 pm)
features music by Chico Strings. The pub-
lic is invited to take time in selecting one
artwork for the Peoples Choice award.

Its that time again for the Stirling
City Town Wide Yard Sales. This annual
event raises money for The Stirling City
Community Gardens Art-History Project,

Library Complex, as well as benefiting the
individual yard sale sellers that plan all

year for this well-attended event.

Reader Advisory: In order to avoid
misunderstandings, some advertisers do
not offer employment but rather supply
the readers with manuals, directories
and other materials designed to help
their clients establish mail order selling
and other businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance should you send any
money in advance or give the client your
checking, license ID, or credit card
numbers. Also beware of ads that claim
to guarantee loans regardless of credit
and note that if a credit repair company
does business only over the phone its
illegal to request any money before
delivering its service. All funds are
based in US dollars. 800 numbers may
or may not reach Canada.
THE DIGGER IS now offering free online
classied ads. Just go to digger-
news.com and you can post ads in all
classications free online: everything
from Real Estate and job listings to ser-
vices and items for sale. You can even
add a picture at no charge.
CLASSIFIED DIRECT MAIL RATES.
Classied ads running in the Direct Mail
editions of The Digger Shopper & News will
be charged an additional $2 to help cover
the cost of the additional 19,200 circulation.
The direct mail edition has a total
circulation of 28,200 copies.
NEED HELP WITH BUILDING OR
REPAIRS? Check Out The Service Direc-
tory or Work Wanted Section.
NOTICE TO READERS
Licensed Contractors are required by State
law to list their license number in
advertisements. The law also states con-
tractors performing work totaling $500 or
more must be State licensed. Advertise-
ments appearing in this Publication without a
license number indicate that the contractor
is not licensed. For more
information contact: Contractors State
License Board. Toll Free 1-800-321-2752.
ATTENTION READERS!
NOTICE 900 NUMBERS!!
If you dial a telephone number with a 900
prex or 900 area code, there may be a
charge plus possible toll. Ads that
advertise a FREE message may refer you
to a 976 number at the end of the recorded
message. If you call the 976 number you
may be charged accordingly. The Digger
Shopper does not verify advertising claims
and advises investigating if investment is
required.

My guidebook said it was less than a
half an hour by car from Chipping Camp-
den, and that proved to be the case that
early Monday evening getting to Stratford-
Upon-Avon, Shakespeares hometown.
The roads were well-marked and since
Stratford is the largest community in the
area, it was on every crossroads sign.
With my trusty map of the city in hand,
I knew where to tell Dave to turn to land us
at the parking lot closest to the new 2011

art theater. We
asked someone
on a street cor-
ner which way
to walk to the
theater, and she
pointed and said,
Its right down
there. It was in
plain view, may-
be a block or so
away, and
looked like
a very

ture. We
had a delight-
ful walk right
along the River
Avon to the the-
ater.
We quickly got
our tickets, re-
served by phone
previously, and
since I had
From 2800 B.C. to the 21st CenturyEngland, May, 2012
The Royal Shakespeare Co. in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Blenheim Palace, & Oxford
hoped to dine in
their restaurant on
the top floor (the
Queen has dined
there), thats where
we headed, after
stopping for a few
minutes in the gift
shop to pick up a
small gift for my
Shakespeare-lov-
ing friend. But alas, no tables were avail-
ableseems they are heavily reserved in
advance. What did we know we were
just tourists? So, we opted to eat in their
casual cafe, but that wasnt all bad because
it is next to a terrace that overlooks the
river, and I loved seeing the swans and the
people on the other side of the river, many
with dogs off-leash and enjoying a romp
along in the lovely green park area. It was
a very idealistic scene, and I decided that
was a city in which I would enjoy living.
When we took our seats in the theatre,
the woman next to me introduced herself.
She was with a group of nurses from New
Jersey visiting a hospital in a nearby city.
When I told her where we were from, she
said, My uncle retired to Oroville, Ca-
lif. two years ago.
Talk about a small
world! We dont
know her uncle, but
we may well look
him up.
We loved seeing
The Comedy of
Errors that night
twas very well per-
formed. The actors
did an outstanding
job, living up to the
Co mp a n y s
reputation. The
original theater
was built in
1879 to honor
the Bard, but
it burned down
in 1926. Part
of what we see
today was built
in 1932, but it
was redone in
2011 and has
a thrust-out
stagethere is
not a bad seat
in the house!
After the
performance,
it was a short
walk back to
our car, and
soon we were
back on the
road to Chip-
ping Camp-
den. It occurred to me at some point that
wed gone further, than when we had our
last turn going to Stratford, and I men-
tioned that to Dave. And we had. Chip-
ping Campden is a small village and was
not on the first sign where we should have
turned. (Another larger city beyond it was
on that sign.) Soon we saw a sign that I
was pretty sure would work, and we turned
there. That road did, indeed, get us back
to Chipping Campden, and it was only a
few minutes longer than our trip getting to
Stratford.
Since we needed to reserve a room for
the following night, near Heathrow Air-
port, we stopped in our room and Dave
grabbed his laptop, which we took
to the lounge at our quaint, 600-yr.
old hotel. We had a nightcap and
hors doeuvres there, while Dave se-
cured reservation at Ibis Hotel, in the
Heathrow Airport area.
A good nights rest and after an-
other hearty breakfast at the Noel
Arms, we were off the next morning
to drive through more of the enchant-
ing, tiny Cotswolds villages on our
way back to London. Broad Camp-
den, very near Chipping Campden
has a score of lovely thatched-roof cottag-
es, but no place to easily park and take a
photo, when theres a car right behind you,
and narrow streets with parked cars into
one of the lanes.
Blockley, which is located higher in
the hills, was the next village we drove
through, and it is a popular location for
films. But again, no easy place to park,
plus Dave is thinking, We need to be back
in London by tonight. Next we drove
through Bourton-on-the Hill. That part of
that days drive was more driving through
a fairytale. Absolutely gorgeous scenery!
(I dont know why, but I absolutely loved
seeing the sheep in the meadows around
nearly every bend in the road.)
From there we drove from Gloucester-
shire into the Oxfordshire Cotswolds
larger towns. We stopped in one with me
trying to find a sheep
magnet, the only sou-
venir I wanted from this
trip. I had no luck cause
we were then on the out-
er edge of the Cotswolds
(few fields of sheep).
But the folks here sent
me to a few shops that
they thought might have
those, and at one point
Dave and I got separated,
and he took a photo of an
English post box (mail
box) with me wandering down the street,
in the opposite direction, looking for him.
It was onward to Blenheim Palace, the
accidental birthplace of Winston Churchill.
In 1704, John Churchill (first Duke of
Marlborough) defeated Louis XIVs
French forces at the Battle of Blenheim,
and Queen Anne rewarded him by having

e x p e r i e n c e .
This couple was
leaving the next
morning to be-
gin their trip. As
we talked, Dave
mentioned that in the mid 1960s he had
been stationed at Menwith Hill, near Har-
rogate in northern England. As it turned
out, this couple lived in Skipton, just a few
miles from Harrogate. As we continued
talking, Dave mentioned that when he was
stationed near there, he drove a 1949 MG-
TC and that a Mr. Naylor from that area
always worked on his car. Unbelievably,
the man said, Thats who works on my
car! Then Dave asked how old Mr. Nay-
lor was now,
and the man
said, Well,
his sons ac-
tually run
the busi-
ness now.
I found
that experi-
ence just as
amazing as
the one in
St r at f or d-
Upon-Avon, where the woman in the the-
ater had a cousin who lived in Oroville!
The next morning, we returned our
rental car to Hertz, took the shuttle to our
airport terminal, redeemed our original de-
posit on the Oyster cards we used in Lon-
don, bought a snack with those English
pounds and boarded our Virgin Atlantic
flight back to the U.S.
It was an excellent flight and gave me
nearly 11 hours in which to relive/think
about our trip to England. It would be im-
possible to name a single highlight of that
trip. (I asked Dave, and he couldnt name
one either.)
I do know that I feel very fortunate
that we landed in England in May, 2012,
just ahead of the Queens Diamond Jubi-
lee, which we enjoyed watching on TV in
June (we had much better weather for our
Thames cruise than she did), and then we
watched the Wimbledon tennis matches, be-
cause Dave loves his tennis (multiple times
he announced, I saw that on my grounds
tour.), and our time in our rental car was
priceless, as was experiencing The Night
of 1,000 Voices at Royal Albert Hall with
Ken and Ami and our evensong with the
boys choir at Westminster Abbey. Most
tourists arent fortunate enough to experi-
ence those.
I was a reluctant traveler to England
due to its
we a t h e r ,
which I
figured was
gonna be
rainy and
chilly in
early May.
It was a bit
chilly for
me (some
d a y s /
nights I
even wore
my gloves),
but we
were very fortunate in terms of rainwe
saw very little rain.
We hope to go back to England soon.
The next time, well spend a night in Ave-
bury and get up to Harrogate, where Dave
was stationed during the mid 1960s.
We saw a lot in 10 days time, but I never
should have agreed to only four days in our
rental car!

ford, as did
Indias Indira
Gandhi, plus
two dozen
English prime
ministers, in-
cluding Da-
vid Cameron,
the current prime minister.
We parked on a side street and walked
past some of the college buildings, before
finding our way to an eatery called Four
Candles, where we had lunch. It was fun
to walk the sidewalks there and feel the
energy of the students. I do believe that
university communities have a pulse that
you can actually feel.
Once back on the road, we were headed
for our Heathrow
area hotel. When we
had left London by
cab four days earlier
and picked up our
rental car, we had
looked at the vari-
ous lodging avail-
able on that section
of road and chose
the Ibis; so, we had
a general idea of
where it was locat-
ed (on a very busy
road, of course).
But we found it
with little trouble,
despite heavy traf-
fic, and checked in. Our room was small,
but workable for us. Dave decided to do a
practice run re: returning our rental car
the next morning and catching our flight.
That proved to be an excellent idea, as the
trip to Hertz the next morning was flaw-
architect John Vanbrugh build this palace
for him. It is considered by many to be the
finest Baroque building in England. It sits
on 2,000 acres, and the extensive gardens
were designed by Capability Brown.
In 1874, a later John Churchills daugh-
ter-in-law was at a party here when she
went into premature labor and birthed a
son, Winston, who later led his country
through WWII. There is a Churchills
Destiny exhibit near the main entrance to
the palace that explores the military leader-
ship of both John, for whom the palace was
built, and Winston, who won the Battle of
Britain and helped defeat Hitler.
My guidebook said that you could eas-
ily enjoy most of a day here, but two hours
was the least amount of time, one should
spend. Since we needed to get back to
Heathrow that day, we didnt feel that we
had two hours to tour here, and hated to
spend the $65 for just a half an hour or
so. Thus, we only took a few photos at the
main gate, and then drove into the town of
Woodstock. We inquired in a pub about
lunch, but they werent serving; so, we
drove on toward Oxford, less than 30 miles
down the road.
Oxford started as a community and was
named where oxen crossed (forded) the
Thames (then called Isis) and the Cherwell
rivers. Its famous university, dating back
to 1167, is actually 38 self-funded colleges.

Ruby, the Dalmatian Ambassador, will
be at the Oroville State Theatre for the up-
coming, 101 Dalmatians, Kids Disney
musical presented by Stamp Your Feet Per-
forming Arts Center (SYF) on Saturday,
July 28th. The Dalmatian was originally
bred to run under or along-side of horse-
drawn carriages, and therefore has a lot of
stamina and energy. Many of us think of
the Dalmatian as the fire house dog.
Disneys 101 Dalmatians, a live mu-
sical play, promotes the beauty and joy
of the breed. But, the Dalmatian, like all
breeds have specific breed characteristics
and needs. Ruby is coming to help edu-
cate people and share the joy of 101 Dal-
matians with us.
Too often people fall in love with the
exterior beauty, or charm of a certain breed
and find, all too late, they have a total mis-
match as to the dogs needs, or an owners
realistic expectations. Ruby is an ambassa-

for Dalma-
tians, but for
all dogs try-
ing to help
people learn

The Oro-
ville State
Theatre is located at 1489 Myers. Come
early, at 6 p.m. to meet Ruby. Curtain is
at 6:30 p.m. For advance tickets at $10
each, visit Hair Unlimited on Olive Hwy.,
across from A-1 Appliances, or call SYF
at (530) 538-6233. Tickets at the door are
$12. Children four and under are FREE!

Its official. California State Fair judg-
es like Bartholomew Butte - the fictional
character whose good looks and creative
presentation earned another Gold Medal
for Butte County at last weeks award cer-
emonyat Cal Expo.
This is a very whimsical and beauti-
ful booth, Debra Lucero of Butte County
Cultural Tourism said. The idea was to
show the art of agriculture and the wealth
of what Butte County has to offer.
The display features food and unique
specialty products of Butte County. Sier-
ra Nevada, Chico State, Satava Art Glass,
Feather River Brewing Co., Kleen Kan-
teen, Beans of Paradise, Two English La-
dies and many other ag-based businesses
participated this year, Lucero said.
She explained that companies donate
local product for the exhibit. Im very
grateful to the County Board of Supervi-
sors for the support theyve shown over
the years to build a booth Butte County can
be proud of.
According to Lucero, planning for the
State Fair booth begins in January or Feb-
ruary with preliminary concepts, designs
and back and forth ideas with Richard Bay,
who has been an award-winning builder/
designer for the Butte County booth for
more than a decade. We land on an idea
and then in July, Richard begins to build
the booth and I begin to collect product
The Art & Agriculture of Butte County -
a State Fair Gold Medal Winner!
and explore the county for new content
ideas and products.
Lucero said Butte County Cultural Tour-
ism was born more than a decade ago.
Since that time, we have seen the
growth of tourism-related events and activ-
ities that highlight Butte Countys ag, arts,
nature, recreation and history assets. Our
program has helped facilitate and network
individuals and organizations throughout
the county.
This year, she explained, there is an
emphasis at the fair on Oroville-related
events and a video that highlights the Chi-
nese Temple, Lake Oroville Visitor Cen-
ter, Bolts Antique Tool Museum and the
Feather River Nature Center.
Since 1986, seven California State Fair
Gold Medal Awards have been received by
Butte County for its annual booth; six of
those occurred under the creative direction
of Lucero, in conjunction with Bay.
The State Fair is a great way for local
companies and Butte County to gain state-
wide exposure, Lucero said. It also gives
me and my crew a chance to interact with
local folks and see the innovative Butte
County businesses, products and events.
We always seem to discover something
new in the process.

Lets all sing Happy Birthday to my ad-
opted Grandson who just celebrated his
rst birthday at thirty. A typo error? No.
It is the anniversary date of his rst full
year of sobriety. He, like many, became a
substance abuser as a young teenager.
Today, enjoying life, a full time job and
sobriety, Frankie thanks Alcoholics Anon-
ymous, here in Oroville. If you, a friend or
a loved one is suffering from the affects of
substance abuse, cut yourself a break and
contact Alcoholics Anonymous, or Addicts
Anonymous for meeting times and places.
About birthdaysa lot of dogs and cats
will not get to enjoy another birthday due
to overpopulation. If you have pets, please
spay or neuter them. PAWS, Promo-
tion of Animal Welfare provides low cost
spaying/neutering, and payment plans are
available.
The PAWS Clinic is located at 3557
Oro Dam Blvd, Oroville, phone 534-0900.
PAWS also has a thrifty thrift store at the
same location. Visit their website to learn
more.

dog? Ever think about a Dalmatian? Meet
one and learn about the breed while enjoy-
ing Disneys 101 Dalmatians, Kids play

Olive Hwy, across from A-1 Appliances or
call SYF at 538-6233. Children age four
and under are FREE!
Give a round of applause for Kathy Neal
of Creative Performing Arts Center who
is tap dancing her way back from recent
surgery with that infectious smile and sig-
nature question, How ya doing?
If you have your calendar marked to
attend the melodrama, The Picture That
Was Turned to the Wall by HOCKS Un-
limited, youre doing just ne. This is the
37th production by HOCKS at the Historic
Monday Club, 2385 Montgomery St., Oro-
ville. The remaining show dates are July

teen dollars a person includes beer, or soda,
popcorn and all the booing and hissing you
can muster! For tickets, visit Discount
Books, 1515 Myers or call Dell DeMeyer

Known for early sellouts, The Monday
Club is also hosting Hot August Nights

Studios and Housers Music on Saturday
night, August 25th at 6:30 p.m. Dinner
and show is $14 a person. For more in-
formation/ reservations call 533-5976 or

Speaking of performing, did I see you at
the Concert in the Park at Riverbend Park?
Remember, 6:30 p.m. Thursday nights, and
its FREE!
Free? How about a movie in Orovilles
Bicentennial Park, corner of Huntoon/
Robinson across from the PG&E Park-
ing Lot starting at dusk. The movie dates
are August 3rd, 10th and 17th with Mary
Poppins on the third of August.
I remember seeing Mary Poppins,
when it came out in 1964A Step Back
in Time. Want to step back in time with
me?
Discover Orovilles Historic Treasures.
They are FREE to children under twelve,
youth/adults three dollars and discounts
available. The Bolt Tool Museum, said
by some to be the largest tool museum in
the world, is on Stafford between Oak and
Pine Street. Bud Bolt will put on a spe-
cial presentation: The Evolution of Tools.
To this date, it is one of the best historical
presentations I have ever heard. For more
information, call 538-2528.
But, do you have a hankering for the spir-
it of the old west, or the pioneer days? Mo-
sey on over to the Pioneer Museum located
at 2332 Montgomery Street, Oroville. As
for me, I just left Tong Fong Lows across
the street from our historic State Theatre,
and Im headed to The Chinese Temple
and Gardens at 1500 Broderick Street.
Want more information on where to go,
what to do, and how to do it? Call the City
Hall at 538-2415, 1735 Montgomery St.
Another great resource is the Chamber of
Commerce, right next door to the City Hall
where I just picked up brochures, copies
of 101 Things to Do for the Summer of
2012 and Adventures, a Guide to Rec-
reation and Outdoor Adventures. These
publications are free. Also visit the ofcial
site for the city at cityofororoville.org. and/
or visit www.101thingstodo.net.
Free! There is that word, again! I just
discovered we have a Military Museum
right here in Oroville. This admission-free
museum is maintained by Surplus City
and SC Jeep Parts located at 4514 Pacic
Heights Road. Phone number 534-9956.
Be sure and thank the businesses, indi-
viduals, and the docents who work so hard
to keep our museums and special histori-
cal locations and special events available
to the public.
Now, Ive got to go and nd my hiking
boots. I just read about the Feather Falls
Hike in the Adventures publication.
Happy Trails to You!
