Press the ON/OFF switch (1) to switch the notebook on. The power-on indicator is lit.
If you have set a password, you must enter this when asked to do so in order to start the operating system. Further information can be found in the "Professional Notebook" operating manual, "Security functions" chapter.

Status indicators
The status indicators provide information about the status of the power supply, the drives and the keyboard functions.
Status indicators
Radio components indicator Indicator lights up: One or more radio components are switched on. Power indicator Indicator lights up: The notebook is switched on. Energy-saving mode indicator Indicator lights up: The system is in power-saving mode. Drive indicator Indicator lights up: One of the drives (e.g. hard disk, CD/DVD) is being accessed. Battery indicator Indicator lights up: The battery is charging. Caps Lock indicator Indicator lights up: The Caps Lock key has been pressed. All the characters you type appear in upper case. In the case of overlay keys, the character printed on the upper left of the key appears when that key is pressed. Num Lock indicator Indicator lights up: The key combination Fn + Num has been pressed. The numeric keypad is activated. In the case of overlay keys, the character printed on the upper right of the key appears when that key is pressed.

Key combinations
The following description of key combinations refers to functions when using Microsoft Windows. Some of the following key combinations may not function in other operating systems and with some device drivers. Key combinations are entered as follows: Press and hold the rst key in the combination. While holding the rst key down, press the other key or keys in the combination. If an external keyboard is being used, instead of pressing the Fn key, you should press Ctrl + Alt Gr or Ctrl + Alt simultaneously.
Help hotkey Starts the online help for the application currently active.
Help F1 Fn + hotkey
Energy saving mode Switches the notebook into the energy-saving mode.
Energy Fn + F2saving mode
Switching between screen outputs If an external monitor is connected, the monitor on which the output is to be displayed can be selected with this key combination.
Switching Fn + F3 between screen outputs
You can opt to use: just the notebooks LCD screen just the external monitor both the LCD screen and the external monitor Screen blanking This key combination switches the LCD screen off. The next input switches the display on again.

Switch loudspeakers on and off This key combination switches your notebooks loudspeakers off and on.

Decrease volume This key combination reduces the volume of the integrated loudspeakers.
Volume Fn + F6
Increase volume This key combination raises the volume of the integrated loudspeakers.

Screen Fn + F8brightness
Decrease the screen brightness This key combination decreases the brightness of the screen.
Screen Fn + F9brightness
Increase the screen brightness This key combination increases the brightness of the screen.
Turn Wireless LAN, Bluetooth and UMTS on and off (optional) This key combination starts the LaunchManager. The radio components activated in the BIOS Setup can be turned on and off individually.
You can only use the key combination Fn + F10 if the LaunchManager program is installed on your system.
Switch between open applications With this key combination you can switch between several open applications.

Perform a warm restart This key combination triggers a reset and reboots the notebook. First hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and then press the Del key. First the Task Manager is displayed. Then you must press all three keys again to reboot.

Backtab This key combination moves the cursor back to the previous tabular stop.

Click on Start Control Panel. Double-click on Regional and Language Options. The current settings are displayed in the Regional Options tab. Select the country settings you want to use. Click on Apply. Click on the Details button in the Languages tab. Click on Add to add other keyboard layouts to the selection. In the Default input language eld, choose the keyboard layout you want to use when you start your notebook. Click on Apply and conrm with OK.

Your notebook is equipped with three Easy Launch keys. You can start the following applications or functions by pressing a single key.
Radio components: Wireless LAN / Bluetooth / UMTS (optional) This Easy Launch key starts the LaunchManager. The radio components activated in the BIOS Setup can be turned on and off individually. If the LaunchManager program is not installed on your system, all the radio components activated in the BIOS Setup can be turned on an off with this Easy Launch key.

Battery
Removing the battery
Battery
Switch the notebook off and pull the power plug out of the mains socket. Close the LCD screen so that it locks into place. Disconnect all cables connected to the notebook. Turn your notebook over and place it on a stable, sturdy, at surface. If necessary, lay an anti-slip cloth on this surface to prevent the notebook from being scratched. Push the battery lock in direction of the arrow (1). Slide the locking device in the direction of 2 the arrow (2) and hold it in place. Pull the battery out of the casing in the 1 direction of the arrow (3). 3
Battery: inserting
Push the battery into the battery compartment so that the contacts enter rst (1). Push the battery into the battery compartment until you feel it click into place. Push the battery lock in the direction of the arrow (2) up to the stop.

SIM card
Follow the instructions supplied by the provider of the SIM card.
Unlock the SIM card holder by gently pushing the holder in the direction shown by the arrow on the holder. You will feel the SIM card holder unlocking.

Open the SIM card holder (1). Push the SIM card (2) into the holder (3). Make sure the contacts of the SIM card point towards the inside of the notebook.

You will feel the SIM card holder lock into place. Close the cover of the SIM card slot. Install the battery again (see "Battery: inserting", Page 12). The installation of a wireless LAN module not approved by Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH voids the permits issued for this device (see chapter "Technical data", Page 19).
Depending on the device variant, wireless LAN, Bluetooth and/or UMTS may be integrated in your notebook. On delivery, WLAN components are switched on, Bluetooth components off.
If you switch the radio components off, the Bluetooth module and the UMTS and wireless LAN transmission unit (antenna) are also switched off. You can turn the radio components on or off either individually or together. In the BIOS Setup you can specify which radio components can be switched on and off with the corresponding Easy Launch key or with the Fn + F10 key combination. Only components activated in the BIOS Setup can be switched on and off with the Fn + F10 combination or with the corresponding Easy Launch key. Radio components disabled in the BIOS-Setup, on the other hand, cannot be controlled with the Easy Launch key or the key combination. You can enable or disable radio components individually in the BIOS Setup. To do this you must have set at least a supervisor password. Observe the additional security instructions for devices with radio components provided in the "Security" manual. Further information on using the wireless LAN is provided in the online help for your wireless LAN software and in the "Wireless LAN" manual. The "Wireless LAN" manual can be found on the "Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD provided with your computer. You can nd more information on how to use Bluetooth on the CD you received with your Bluetooth software. You can obtain more information on UMTS from your service provider.

You may remove and install the components described in this chapter yourself after consulting the Hotline/Help Desk. If you remove and install components without consulting the Hotline/Help Desk, then the warranty of your notebook will be voided.
Hard disk
The hard disk is the most important storage medium of your notebook. You can work considerably faster and more efciently if you copy applications and les from CDs to your hard disk. When the hard disk is accessed, the hard disk indicator lights up in the status indicator panel.
