What do we expect of 'good' referees?

What factors can affect their performance?


The job requirements of referees have expanded tremendously in recent years. If the right decisions are to be made, what we need are not 'walking rule books', but rather individuals with leadership skills and the keen eyes and ears of an expert, people who can put themselves into game situations and make appropriate decisions.

Motivation

Action must always be supportive and command respect!

the aim of all decisions is to use a specific form of behavior to build a relationship based on trust decisions should be made not on the basis of powers drawn from the rule book, but through accepted, earned authority referees must make themselves aware of the 'psychological flow of the game

referees must recognize conflicts of interests between the players on the paying court and those on the sidelines referees must learn to recognize different types and forms of messages body language (gestures and facial expressions) referees have to learn how to deal with confrontation

Measures to reduce misjudgements

behavioural training referee coaching instead of observation! referees must be trained in making decisions video analysis
using feedback, referees can even learn to make 'impossible' decisions

Self-development

top referees need to mature from checking the rules and applying them in many different situations to become diplomats on the court! referees must have the courage to make unpopular decisions, even going against pressure from the crowd, and be brave enough to admit to their own errors in an appropriate way

referees must exude self-confidence and be sure of their own performance; uncertainty automatically leads to stressful situations

Self-development

style = recognition of all those involved, the ability to create a good atmosphere in hectic games, without needing to be perfect referees must not be neurotic about their image or feel the need to prove themselves (frustration at home or at work, etc.) referees need a sense of camaraderie and team spirit 'the finale referee'

Summary
Good referees need to be flexible, act in the proper manner, concentrate, be committed and exude authority without being power mad You must have personal charisma, technical know-how and an understanding of the game be able to solve conflicts and withstand pressure from spectators, officials and the media.
