1. Laydownfloorplatesoftank,topcourseof plates,roofbeamsandroofplatesleaving holesforjackingtrestles. 2. Assemblejacksinsidetankanderect.Weld baseplateandstaylegscleatstoflooroftank. 3. Connectliftingarmanddistanceholderto insideoftankbymeansofliftingcleats. 4. Lifttanktoheightrequiredtopositionsecond courseofplates. 5. Weldinplates,lowerjacks,reconnecttoshell andliftagain.

BASEREPAIR

DEMOLITION

Bymodifyingthetankerectionjacksfromfrictiongriptopositivelocking,itispossibletolift andlowertankssafelyandquicklyforbaserepair,annularreplacement,levelcorrection andfloorrenewal.Thesamemodifiedequipmentcanalsobeusedfortankdemolition.This givestheadvantagesofimprovedsafetythroughworkingatgroundlevel,improvedscrap qualityforreprocessing,ortheabilitytoreerectthedismantledtankonanothersite.

TheprocedureusedbyBYGGWIKtorotatethe'MaryRose'intoanuprightposition. At11.00amonJuly1985theprideofHenryVIII'sfleet,theMaryRose,wasreturnedtoan evenKeeltheexacttimetothehourshesank440yearsbefore.Gentlehandlingwas imperativeforthesuccessoftheproject.
THEMARYROSE,oncetheprideof HenryVIII'sfleet,liesonherstarboard sideintheconfinesofaVictoriandry dockherportsidehavingeroded awayduringher437yearsojournina muddynest,15metresbelowthesurface oftheSolent.Sheisalmostcontinuously sprayedwithwatertostopherfalling apartassherestswithinthesteelarms ofacradleatanangleof60deg.tothe vertical.Thecradle,inturn,restsupon thedeckofthebargewhichreturnedher toherhomeportofPortsmouthinthe winterof1982. Theinadequacyofthebargeasalong termsupportpromptedtheTrustatthis timenotonlytoremovethebargeand replacethedockblocksonwhichitstood withmorepermanentpiers,butalsoto returntheMaryRosetoanevenkeel. Thelatterprojectprovedtobeunique asnocomparableexercisehadbeen undertaken,anyproposalputforward wouldinevitablybepronetounforeseen complications.Heavyliftingspecialists, BYGGWIKthecompanyhadbeen involvedintheraisingoftheMaryRose twoyearsearlier.

TheRotationoftheMaryRose

TheTudorwarshiptheMary Roseandhercradle,lyingonthe deckofthebargewhichreturned hertoland.

Thejacksarepressurised,raising theinnertowersandsteel crossbeamagainsttheunderside ofthebarge'sdeck,thus supportingthecradleandthe MaryRose.Thebargeanddock blocksareremovedandnew brick pierserected.

Thestructureisjackeddownon tothebrickpiersandthetowers areremoved

Thecradleismodifiedforsliding androtating.Slidingshoesare fittedthe theundersideofthe cradleandarampisinstalled againstthedockwall.Thehinge shoefunctionsasapivotand jackingpointonwhichthe structurewillturn.

Thestructureispushedacrossthe bargedeckanduptherampby horizontallymountedjacks. Pivotingsteelcolumnsare attachedtoextensionarmsbolted ontoeachframeofthecradle. Mobilejacksonthecolumns pushdownonthearms,rotating thestructureuntilitreachesover centre.Thejacksarethenfixed, supportingthestructuringthis position,andthenloweringit

1. FORMATIONOFCONTRACT ThehiringagreementshallcomeintoeffectuponreceiptbytheOwnerofthewrittenacceptancefromtheHireroftheOwnersquotation,or,whereearlier,upontheHirertelephoning theOwnertoconfirmverbalacceptanceofthequotationandineithereventtheconditionsshallbeincorporatedintotheHiringAgreementandtheOwnerwillnotacceptanyvariation unlesspreviouslyagreedinwritingwiththeHirer. 2. INTERPRETATION OwnermeansBYGGWIKUKLtdoritssuccessorintitle. Hirermeanstheperson,firmorcompanytowhomtheequipmentishiredandwhowillberesponsiblefortheobligationsoftheHirerhereinaftercontained. Equipmentmeansallplantmachineryandpumpsandotherancilliaryitems suppliedbytheOwnerinaccordancewiththequotation. QuotationmeansthewrittenstatementfromtheOwnertotheHirerhowsoeverdeliveredgivingdetailsoftheperiodicortotalchargepayablebytheHirertotheOwnerfortheuseof theequipmenttogetherwithotherspecialtermsandconditionsrelatingtothehiringandwherethetermsofthequotationconflictwiththeseconditionsthetermsofthequotationshall prevail. PeriodofhiremeanstheperiodcommencingwiththedateonwhichtheequipmentisdispatchedfromtheOwnerspremisesandendingonthedateonwhichtheequipmentis returnedtotheOwnerspremises. ThesitemeansthesitestatedintheOwnersquotationtowhichtheequipmentwillbesentunlesstheOwnerhaspriortothecommencementofthehiringperiodagreedtoan alternativesite.TheHirershallnotmovetheequipmentoranypartofittoanothersiteduringthecontinuationofthehiringperiodwithoutthepriorwrittenconsentoftheOwner. 3. TRANSPORT Theowneracceptsnoresponsibilityfordeliveringtheequipmenttothesiteorcollectingequipmentbackfromthesiteattheendofthehiringperiod.Theownerwillwhensorequested andwhenpracticablearrangetodelivertheequipmentandtocollecttheequipmentatheendofthehiring,buttheHirershallbesolelyresponsibleforthecostofsuchtransportand foranylossordamagetotheequipmentduringsuchtransporthowsoevercaused.TheownerisundernoliabilityforanylossoccasionedtotheHireroranyoneelseforlatedeliveryor collectionoftheequipment. 4. RISK a) TheHirershallbeliabletotheownerforanylossofordamagetotheequipmentduringtheperiodofhireandshallpaytotheownerthefullcostofreplacingorrepairingalllost ordamagedequipment. b) Ifduringthehiringtheirshouldbeanystoppageorbreakdownofanypartoftheequipmentthen(exceptwherethebreakdownorstoppageoccursthroughthenegligenceor defaultoftheHireroranycontractororemployeeoftheHirer)theowner willathisownexpenseremedythebreakdownorstoppageorreplacethedefectivepartbuttheowner shallbeundernoliabilitytotheHirerforanylossoccasionedtotheHireroranythirdpartybysuchbreakdownorstoppage. c) Theownershallbeunderno liabilityforanylossorclaimfordamagesbytheHireroranyotherpersonarisingeitherdirectlyorindirectlyformtheuseoftheequipmentduring thehiringhowsoeveroccasioned. d) TheHirershallindemnifytheowneragainstthefullamountofanyjudgementagainsttheownerinrespectofanyclaimarisingunderthehiringwhetherinrespectoflossor damagetothegoodsorpropertyiftheHireroreanyotherpersonorinrespectofpersonalinjuriestoanycontractororemployeeoftheHireroranyotherpersonandsuch indemnityshallincludethelegalandothercostsoftheownerindefendingsuchproceedingsandofproceedingsagainsttheHirertoenforcetheindemnityhereincontained. 5. MAINTENANCE a) IntheeventofanybreakdownorfailureoftheequipmentoranypartthereoftheHirershallimmediatelynotifytheownerofsuchbreakdownorfailure. b) Uponreceiptofsuchnoticetheownerwill: i) attendatthesiteassoonasispracticableandrepairtheequipmentorreplacethedefectivepartasnecessaryor ii) instructtheHirertoobtaintheservicesofanapprovedfirmtocarryoutthenecessaryrepairorreplacementoraccordancewithanyinstructionsinthatbehalfgivenbythe owner. iii) replacethedefectivepartorcarryouttherequiredadjustmentinaccordancewiththeownersinstructionsprovidedthatinrespectofsubparagraphs(ii)and(iii)ofthiscondition allreplacementsshallbeassuppliedorspecifiedbytheowner. iv) TheHirershallpaytotheownercompensationforanylossordamagetotheowneroccasionedbyrepairworktotheequipmentorfromtheuseofsparesorreplacementsother thanashereinbeforespecified. c) TheHirershallatalltimesallowtheowneraccesstothesiteforthepurposeofinspectingthestateandconditionoftheequipmentandthecarryingoutanynecessary maintenanceandforthispurposetheHirershallbesolelyresponsibleforprovidingasafeplaceofworkand(savewheretheownersownemployeesarecarryingout maintenance)forensuringthatallstatutoryrequirementsastosafemethodsofworkarecompliedwith. 6. OPERATOR a) TheequipmentshallbeoperatedbyoronbehalfoftheHirerexclusivelyatehHirersdiscretionandiftheownerattheHirersrequestprovidesanoperatortooperatethe equipmenttheoperatorshallcarryoutalllawfulinstructionsoftheHirerintheoperatingoftheequipmentandshallforthepurposeoftheseconditionsbedeemedtobe exclusivelyunderthecontrolofthehire,providedthattheHirerinoperatingtheequipmentshallhavedueregardtotheinstructionsandoperatorsmanualastothemethodof operationloadingandalothermattersrelatingtotheequipment. b) TheHirershallnot i) usetheequipmentotherthanasstatedinparagraph(a)ofthisconditionandinparticularshallnotusetheequipmentinamannerotherthanasdescribedintheoperating manualeitherastothemannerofuseorthetypeorweightofloadtobelifted. ii) shallnotallowtheequipmenttobeusedotherthanbyemployeesauthorisedbyitorbyanyotheroperatorasdefinedbyparagraph(a)ofthiscondition iii) undernocircumstancesshalltheequipmentbelentorhiredtoanotherperson,firmorcompany. 7. PAYMENT TheHirershallpaythehiringchargestotheownerattheintervalsandinthesumsstatedinthequotationandwhenevertheHirerfailstomakepaymentbythedatestipulatedinthe quotationtheHirershallbeliabletopaytheownerattherateoffivepercentabovethebaselendingratechargedbytheownersbankfromtimetotimeinrespectoftheperiodfrom thepaymentdatesetoutinthequotationtothedateofactualpaymentandsuchrateofinterestshallcontinuetobepaidafteranyjudgementinanyactionbytheownerforthe recoveryofunpaidhiringchargesandtheHirershallnotbeentitledtodeductorsetoffagainstthehiringchargesthewholeoranypartofanyactualorallegedclaim,counterclaimor setoffbetweentheHirerandtheowneroranyofitsemployeesoranypersonclaimingthroughoronbehalfoftheHirer. 8. CURRENCY Wherethequotationisinacurrencyotherthansterlingtheamountpayableshallbecalculatedbyreferencetotherateofexchangefromthatcurrencyintosterlingapplicableatthe dateofthequotation. 9. DISPUTES IntheeventofanydisputeastotheperformanceofthecontractofhiringorastothemeaningofanytermsinthecontractEnglishLawshallbetheproperlawofthecontract. 10. BREACHOFCONTRACT a) AnyfailurebytheHirertoobservethetermshereincontainedshallbedeemedtobeabreachofcontractbytheHirer. b) IftheHirermovesorattemptstomoveorpermitthemovementoftheequipmenttoasiteotherthanthatstipulatedinthequotationorpreviouslyapprovedinwritingbythe owneroriftheHirersellsorhiresorattemptstosellorhiretheequipmenttoanyperson,firmorcompany,orpermitanychargeorlientobetakenovertheequipmentanyof suchactsshallconstituteabreachofcontract. c) Whereeverabreachofcontractoccurstheownermay(wherepracticable)terminatethecontractforthwithandarrangetheremovaloftheequipmentanditsreturntothe ownerspremisesatehcostftheHirerandtheHirershallpaytheowneranycostsoverandabovethechargesstipulatedinthequotationincurredbytheownerin consequencethereofandinallothercasestheownershallbeentitledtorecoverfromtheHirerbythewayofdamagesthecostsofrecoveringpossessionoftheequipmentand returningittotheownerspremisesincludingthecostofdischargingany chargeorlienasappropriateandthecostofmakinggooddamagetotheequipmentorreplacing damagedorirrecoverableequipmentarisingfromthebreachofcontractdefinedinparagraph(a)ofthiscondition. 11. TITLE Titletotheequipmentandeachandeverypartthereofshallatalltimesremainintheowner.ThisagreementshallonlygranttotheHirertherighttousetheequipmentandshallnot transfertotheHireranyrightofownershipinrespectthereofandatnotimeshalltheHireroranypersonclaimingthroughoronbehalfoftheHirerhaveanyrightwhatevertodealwith orchargeorgrantalienoveralloranypartofthesaidequipmentandintheeventofthebreachofthisconditionoroftheHirerbecominginsolventoranyjudgementbeingobtained againsttheHirerthanoneachandeverysuchoccasiontheHirershallaffordaccesstotheownertoallowtheownertorempvetheequipmentinaccordancewiththeprovisionsofthe precedingconditionandshallcompensatetheownerinrespectof suchbreachasprovidedinthesaidprecedingcondition.
