Thinking small: Quality in squares
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Haddonfield Sun
The squares encompass 20 cen-
timeters of intricate, thoughtful
art. They span the room, radiat-
ing and bold, yet small.
Beth Medoway and Colleen
Hammond, curators of A Square
Deal, banded together nearly six
years ago with the shared goal of
making art more accessible to the
general public.
DOWNSIZED, an exhibit from
the Philadelphia-based business,
will be showing in the Markeim
Arts Center through Tuesday,
Aug. 14. Squares will be on dis-
play in Jersey Java on a continu-
ous basis with pieces rotating
every four to six weeks, said Ham-
mond.
While on a trip in Copenhagen,
Denmark, Medoway stumbled
into a 10-foot by 10-foot room hold-
ing a project called 20-20 Vision.
Visitors would sift through
bins of art for small pieces to pur-
chase.
I just loved it, said Medoway.
It was small and affordable. I just
fell in love with the idea.
Everything, she said, was in
focus.
She hoped for a change in her
life, wanted to benefit charities,
small businesses and arts and
soon mobilized her idea for A

2 THE HADDONFIELD SUN
At approximately 5:56 p.m. on
Sunday, July 22, Haddon Fire
Company No. 1 responded to a re-
ported house fire at 125 Prospect
Road in Haddonfield. Upon ar-
rival, assistant chief Sam Trot-
man found a heavy fire condition
in the back of the dwelling on the
first and second floor.
The dwelling fire was immedi-
ately upgraded to a Task Force
Assignment with an automatic
response from several neighbor-
ing fire departments, including
Cherry Hill, Haddon Heights and
Westmont.
Firefighters encountered
heavy smoke conditions inside
the home while attempting to ex-
tinguish the blaze and found that
the fire had extended from the
back porch area, up the back wall
of the home and had entered into
the attic space on the third level.
The fire was extinguished using
Haddonfields compressed air
foam extinguishing system,
which uses a combination of
water, air and foam to quickly ex-
tinguish fires.
There was extensive fire dam-
age to the exterior siding of the
home and the entire attic area. In
addition, the extreme heat from
the fire caused the vinyl siding on
the adjacent neighbors home to
melt. That home was also soaked
down to keep it from catching
fire.
The property owners were not
home at the time of the fire, how-
ever, their two dogs had to be res-
cued. Both dogs were located and
carried out of the burning home
by firefighters. Local neighbors
cared for the dogs until the home-
owners arrived.
The fire was placed under con-
trol in approximately 35 minutes.
The cause of the fire is under
investigation by the local Had-
donfield Fire Official with the as-
sistance of the Camden County
Prosecutors Office fire investiga-
tion unit.

After listening to about three
hours of comments from borough
residents, borough commissioners
last week voted in favor of signing
the letter of intent to begin the
Bancroft property purchase.
A $16.8 million bond referen-
dum to ultimately decide the joint
purchase between the Haddon-
field School District Board of Ed-
ucation and commissioners is an-
ticipated for January 2013.
Commissioner Ed Borden em-
phasized that only the letter of in-
tent was approved, not specific
uses within the potential pur-
chase.
Thats a subject that will come
later, he said.
There will be substantial dis-
cussions in public forums
throughout the fall, he said.
Many steps will be taken prior
to the referendum, said Board of
Education President Steve Wein-
stein.
All these things will take
time, he said, telling the public
that there will be transparency in
the proceedings.
Once the appraisal of the Ban-
croft property is completed, the
results will be available for the
public to view, he said.

I
ts hard to believe, but a new school
year is almost upon us. In a few
short weeks, schools open.
But what will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
If your school district switched its
annual election to November, well ask
if there will be any noticeable impact
on the schools.
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2012-13 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.
in our opinion
Ready for school?
Its August, so school doors open in only a few weeks
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcom-
ing school year. So whats on your
mind? Send us your questions, and
well do our best to get answers.
Residents applaud Bancroft
plan, call cost a deciding factor
We enthusiastically applaud the recently
announced plan to purchase the Bancroft
site. From the outset of the community
conversation seven years ago, there has
been strong sentiment that the Bancroft
parcel should be for public use.
With the leadership of the Board of Edu-
cation, Haddonfield residents have now
been presented with a forward-looking
plan for acquiring Bancroft to create more
passive and active recreation space, relieve
parking issues, comply with the COAH ob-
ligations and bank land for future needs in-
cluding the growth of our schools while
preserving historic structures.
Although the specifics need to be deter-
mined, this is a great start.
At the joint BOE-commissioners meet-
ing on July 18, the multi-step approval
process was laid out clearly, Mr. Weinstein
explained how Haddonfield voters would
determine whether the purchase moves
forward, and experts were on-hand to an-
swer residents questions.
The cost will be a deciding factor for
most of us. As two of the volunteers who
worked to obtain the Green Acres grants
awarded to the borough ($950,000) and for
the passage of the Open Space Trust Fund
(over $567,000 as of Dec. 31, 2011), we are op-
timistic that with an organized effort, the
borough and district will be able to in-
crease the outside sources of support that
will significantly reduce the cost.
Notably, Camden County was previously
awarded a Green Acres grant of $850,000 to
help acquire a portion of Bancroft and the
County Open Space Trust Fund has ex-
pressed ongoing interest in contributing to
this purchase.
To further reduce the costs, we are con-
vinced that the BOE should reconsider in-
cluding artificial turf on two fields as part
of the plan.
The turf issue is a very divisive one,
and the BOE should remove this element
because it is expensive and non-essential at
this time.
First things first lets make this once in
a generation opportunity as affordable as
possible.
Kim Custer
Jamie Horwitz-Fram
Turf management expert
should be added to budget
At a recent meeting about the Bancroft
deal, I asked the Board of Education and
commissioners to clarify a few things. I
asked if the BOE and borough share serv-
ices? Yes. I asked if any B & G or PW staff
members hold a turf grass degree? No, but
Tish said, They take classes. I asked if
anyone knew such a position exists that
there is a BS degree in turf grass science

WOW!
Lead baker Theresa Hrivnak,
with the help of cupcake artist
Joseph Halloran, from the local
premier cupcake specialty shop
Indulgence Cupcakery, will be
competing on an episode of Cup-
cake Wars, season 6: Wild Aid
airing on the Food Network on
Aug. 5 at 8 p.m.
The duo will compete with four
bizarre but effective combina-
tions of flavors.
Both Hrivnak and Halloran
were surprised to hear what re-
spected international chef Flori-
an Bellanger had to say about a
few of their creations, in some
cases rendering Hrivnak speech-
less on stage. Hrivnak and Hallo-
ran had to choose ingredients
from an exotic list and combine
them in a way that would wow the
judges with their decadent, artis-
tically designed flavor.
On Cupcake Wars, four of the
countrys top cupcake bakers face
off in three elimination chal-
lenges until only one decorator
remains. The sweet prize: $10,000
and the opportunity to showcase
their cupcakes at the winning gig.
Whether a special Ace of Cakes
anniversary celebration, a star-
studded magazine party or an A-
list celebrity golf tournament,
these Cupcakes Wars really heat
up. Candace Nelson (owner of
Sprinkles Cupcakes) and Florian
Bellanger (chef and co-owner of
online macaroon company Mad-
Mac) serve as permanent judges
with a third rotating judge each
week, and Justin Willman hosts.
Indulgence Cupcakery was
founded in 2009 and is family
owned and operated premier spe-
cialty bakery. After much success
in catering weddings, birthdays,
showers and corporate functions,
they opened the doors to the first
storefront located just behind
Haddonfields very own
Hadrosaurus statue, lovingly
named Haddy in 2010. Indulgence
specializes in made from scratch
cupcakes created with only the
highest-grade ingredients. They
take pride in a commitment to
tradition, quality, and passion for
baking that can be tasted in all of
the gourmet treats that leave
their shop. Indulgence Cupcakery
is an experience not just a desti-
nation.
After receiving an English de-
gree from Rutgers University and
experiencing time in a cubical,
Hrivnaks entrepreneurial spirit
and love for cupcakes was telling
her that it was for a change. This
led her to take a culinary class
where she received her Culinary
Certificate.
Theresas education, paired
with ever-present love of baking
for friends and family, gave way to
a reality that began as a dream.
Indulgence Cupcakery was born
soon thereafter.
Spending years as a photogra-
pher and a designer after gradu-
ating St. Josephs University, Hal-
loran found an opportunity to as-
sist Theresa in creating the look
and feel of the new venture. Joe
found himself learning the in and
outs of baking from his partner,
until he too found himself en-
gulfed in the wide world of cup-
cakes.
Will Indulgence Cupcakery
win this war? Or eat cake? Find
out on the Food Network. Theresa
and Joe will be at PJ Whelihans
Restaraunt and Pub in Haddon-
field from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The televi-
sions will be turned to the Food
Network so the battle can be seen.
Cupcakes will be provided
(though may not last long!), so
come one, come all, come early
and of course, come ready to
heckle!
Special to The Sun
Indulgence Cupcakerys lead baker Theresa Hrivnak and cupcake
artist Joseph Halloran will be featured on an upcoming episode of
Cupcake Wars on the Food Network.

Square Deal with Hammond.
At Markeim, proceeds from the
purchase of works of art, which
range in price from $40 to $400,
are being given back to the center
for art-related programs and
events.
Each artist uses a panel from A
Square Deal.
There are 13 artists involved
with the Markeim exhibit out of
the hundreds involved in the proj-
ect.
What was different about
Markeim was that we decided to
include the regular, what the
artist would normally look on,
said Hammond.
Typically, the small pieces can
be found in area salons and cafes.
This is the first time weve
ever been given a space that was
hung in as space that was made to
show art, Medoway said. That
was so exciting for us.
Art doesnt have to be a scary
thing, she said.
Recently, she came in contact
with a young woman who refused
to purchase art, saying she wasnt
smart enough to own it.
I dont want people to be
afraid of art, she emphasized.
You have taste. When you buy
art, its all about you liking it, lov-
ing it.
Often times when people think
of art, untouchable pieces that
cover large areas come to mind.
Having artwork thats small
and portable that you can prop up
on a bookcase or put in a plate
stand, theres just always a way to
make art a part of your life re-
gardless of the size of your
house, she said, adding, The
quality of artwork isnt by the
inch.
Some of the best paintings in
the world are small, she said.
In an inflated society filled
with McMansions and great
rooms, its important to remem-
ber the more simple things in life,
such as a pearl.
Just by itself, its a thing of
beauty. Its that idea, too. You
dont need something overwhelm-
ing to be impressive, she ex-
plained. We only take up so
much space ourselves.
Art in the exhibit does not dis-
criminate. From traditional to
contemporary styles, to oil, mixed
media or digital photography,
there is a wide range to give op-
tions for varied tastes.
The artists Medoway and Ham-
mond work with come from sev-
eral different states and coun-
tries. Some theyve met, some
they have only spoken with
through emails.
Its a real variety of back-
grounds, said Hammond.
Theyre from all over the
world.
Benefitting charities is a main
part of their business, she said. In
the past, funds have gone toward
playground renovations, Locks of
Love and Philabundance.
Soon, another set will be exhib-
ited based upon the same prem-
ise, but no further details have
been determined.
Affordable and portable are
key words in their business, ex-
plained Hammond.
This way they can go to their
local caf, they can even go to
their beauty salon and see an
original piece of art and be able
to afford it, she said.
To learn more about the exhib-
it or to participate, visit www.art-
sqs.com. To make a submission,
forward JPG files through their
contact form that represent cur-
rent pieces of art.
The curators will review the
pieces and reach out to artists
they feel are compatible with
their goals.
I feel like we have all these ter-
rific relationships, said
Medoway. Its been this totally
positive experience.

and management? Their answer:
No.
Whether or not we install arti-
ficial turf, perhaps the answer is
to add an expert in turf manage-
ment to the budget (this position
would be shared between the
BOE and town) this person
would have the knowledge and ex-
pertise needed for caring for arti-
ficial and live turf (the athletic
fields), as well as landscape
(parks/public spaces in town).
Since BOE/town has shared serv-
ices, everyone would benefit from
this for a small price tag. Who
would disagree that an expert
turf manager would improve our
existing fields, our public parks
and spaces, and take pressure off
of our current staff trying to
keep up with the fields and parks?
Why not give it a try? Summer
internships are required for de-
gree candidates.
Artificial turf or real turf--
What are we waiting for? Take ac-
tion to take care NOW!
This is a brief description of
Purdue Universitys Department
of Agronomy Turfgrass Science
and Management: Upon comple-
tion of a turf degree, a student is
prepared to manage and provide
technical information for golf
courses, home and commercial
lawns, athletic fields, parks, recre-
ation areas, sod farms, and more.
The use of current recreational
facilities (golf, sports, parks, etc.)
and the need for new recreational
facilities is very high, thus creat-
ing a demand for professional tur-
fgrass managers with a college
education in turfgrass science.

on campus
The Board of Education was
expected to vote on the letter of
intent at its Tuesday, July 31 meet-
ing.
Im worried about the middle-
class flight in this town, said res-
ident Joe Haro, suggesting that
borough, school and county taxes
are going to rise due to the pur-
chase.
Haro requested an in-depth fi-
nancial analysis, stating that the
borough needs to do its home-
work.
Kathy Freeman expressed that
the commissioners need to re-
ceive the trust of residents if they
want the referendum to pass, cit-
ing that it was worrisome that the
beginning of proceedings are oc-
curring in the summer while peo-
ple are on vacation.
The January voting date could
result in a smaller number of vot-
ers heading out to the polls due to
snowbirds heading south for
the winter or the risk of in-
clement weather.
Its not perfect, said Commis-
sioner Jeffrey Kasko. Its not a
perfect situation.
While he said that his personal
preference would be to hold the
vote in November, he under-
stands the time constraints.
November, said Borden, is not
realistic due to the amount of
work that must be done prior to
the vote.
Mayor Tish Colombi said that
she wants everyone to get part of
what they would like from the
purchase. She wants the schools
to be able to expand if necessary
and expressed a strong support
for athletic programs.
Simone Kane, in attendance
with her two young children,
stood in support of both the Ban-
croft purchase and the synthetic
turf fields, calling them a great
asset to the community.
Kane added that the game
fields would be closer to the town,
which would, in her opinion,
boost sales in local businesses.
This purchase would allow
space for growth and more athlet-
ic scholarships, she said.
Resident Beth Zigmund said
that she considers special pro-
grams within the schools to be
more important than turf fields.
She labeled the turf fields as a
frivolous expenditure and said
she passionately finds them to be
unnecessary.
Zigmund said she would vote
against the purchase if the turf
fields remain in the proposal.
Auxiliary police
see new member
Brian Cozzi, a Haddonfield res-
ident and alumnus of Haddon-
field Memorial High School, was
appointed to the Haddonfield
Auxiliary Police at the meeting.
His term expires in December.
Cozzi currently is studying law
and justice at Rowan University
in Glassboro.
Chief of Police John Banning
said that the auxiliary police is a
great organization and does
much for the borough.
This wasnt something that
was very simple, Banning said of
the process to become a member.
Special meeting scheduled
The borough commissioners
will hold a special meeting to dis-
cuss the 2012 road program proj-
ect and address the sidewalk con-
cerns in the town, specifically
Washington Avenue, on Thurs-
day, Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in room 102
