Faith Community Welcomes You

IN TODAYS GOSPEL
Mk. 6:34

When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

FROM FR. ADRIAN

I seem to be always thanking people for something in my weekly letter, so here I go again! To all who made Fr. Davids installation such a memorable event last Sunday, particularly all who ministered at the Eucharist thank you! Bishop Brom expressed his delight at being with us and was most affirming in his words at the end of Mass. Las Madrinas did us proud with a lovely reception in the McKeon Center following the Installation Mass thank you to everyone who helped them with the catering. Hospitality is a hallmark of a healthy faith community it sometimes means sacrifice and it generally means work; but wouldnt you agree that making people feel welcome and valued is its own reward? Thank you everybody for your time, your talent and your treasure. Sister Mary Rose Nguyen, FMM is speaking to us at all Masses this Sunday. She is a Franciscan Missionary of Mary and will speak about her work as a missionary. This is an annual event in every parish in the diocese and we warmly welcome Sister Mary Rose who is a native of Vietnam and wish her a pleasant stay here at the parish. Welcome home to Fr. Tom Herbst, OFM who is back again with us at the Friary in the Mission. Fr. Tom teachers theology at the Franciscan Study Center in Canterbury, England, during the year and loves to come home to the warm sunshine of his native Southern California where he can be near the beach and close to family and friends. Fr. Tom is also teaching in the evenings at the Mission and if you want to hear great stuff about St. Augustine, the Fathers of the Church or look at some Franciscan themes, get hold of a brochure at the Gift Shop or Welcome Center and treat yourself. In August we will begin a series of Saturday morning workshops for Eucharistic Ministers from the Hispanic Community. These will take place from 9:00 to 12:00 noon and will conclude with a certification ceremony in the Parish Chapel. Ministers will be notified by mail and invited to attend. If you are a Eucharistic Minister at the Parish, on Sunday, on weekdays or to the sick and homebound, you must be certified. It is a diocesan requirement. Later in August we will begin workshops for the Hispanic Lectors. All our liturgical ministries are greatly appreciated and valued and these workshops are designed to keep them at their best. We hope to have retreats for all Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors at the Mission in the fall, so keep an eye out for dates in the parish bulletin. By all accounts the Christmas in July fundraising festival was a great success last weekend. The beautiful weather brought people out in huge numbers and as I walked around everyone seemed to be having a fun time, especially the children. Once again thanks to Wanda King, Principal of Old Mission Montessori, and all who work so hard behind the scenes; volunteers, parents and grandparents, former students, parishioners and teachers. You all get an A+ and a half day! Enjoy the lovely weather and remember the sunscreen! God bless,

CATECHETICAL MINUTE: ROMAN MISSAL

Mystagogy; Discerning the Mystery of our Faith Part 1 In the previous articles on the Preface the word Mystagogy was used and many people have asked; what does it mean? In the RCIA process it is the concluding aspect of the catechesis, focusing on the lifelong and ongoing rooting of the individual in the Catholic faith. The Mystery of the Liturgy and Eucharist does not mean mystery as we know it, like a mystery novel, but as the gradual but never complete unfolding of our faith as we live a life of Word & Sacrament. I want to take some time and unfold it for a better understanding of the Mystagogy role in the New Roman Missal. In the Churchs (all of the baptized) long process of liturgical renewal many people have agreed something is still missing in the renewed liturgy. Is it awareness of the sense of the sacred? Is it a lacking of mystery? A lack of catechetical understanding of the Eucharist itself? From all of this anxiety it has sent some people in many directions to recover (in their opinion) what is missing. From this we have an unhealthy emphasis on the cultural and pietistic additions which have no catechetical or liturgical value. Many others believe that the reason for the lack of participation and understanding at Mass comes from the secular culture and its context in which the Liturgy is celebrated. Therefore there is a need to compete with social media, Facebook, etc to hook people into coming to Church or keep them. Some look to the success of the Mega-Churches not realizing that their tradition, from the protestant reformed churches, rejects our understanding and tradition of Word and Sacrament (the liturgy). The role and understanding of the Catholic Liturgy does not call for us to compete with the secular culture in the sense of becoming something we are not! We can learn from some of its aspects but not to the idea of replacing the Altar & Ambo with a band set up for praise & worship. In the evangelical model there is no place or sense of Mystery or Mystagogia. Pope Benedict has spoken of Mystagogy as an available and traditional resource for countering the weight of secularism on a life of faith. Fr. Romano Guardini, a famous liturgist and theologian saw the greatest obstacle to a revitalized Liturgy was the damage from devotional piety which left priests and laity without an understanding of the role of Mystagogy. Fr. Guardini wrote to achieve a true sense and celebration of the liturgy move beyond in giving better instruction on the meaning of ceremonies and liturgical vessels and we shall relearn a forgotten way of doing things and recapture lost attitudes. In the New Roman Missal and its enhancing of traditional religious symbols, gestures, postures and formal Church language, it is hoped that a worshipping church might better discern the Mystery of Christ in its Eucharistic celebrations. But more fundamentally the importance is that those who celebrate the Liturgy, the ministers who assist at the liturgy, and those whose duty it is to teach and educate do not miss this intention, which can happen if they do not take upon themselves the preparation and duty to unfold the Mystery encountered in every liturgy. Without this essential element there is the danger of the Mass simply becoming an obligation or cultural experience. In the next article we will look at the role and place of the Roman Missal in this gradual but never complete unfolding of our faith and how it is to bring us to greater understanding of our faith. Bill Bischoff - Director of Faith Formation

P.S. Last week I said that the Tohono oodham Nation in Arizona is sometimes called Pima Indians. Well, I should have said Popago not Pima, so apologies for that mistake.

July 22, 2012 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time| 7

Padre Adrian Peelo, ofm

NOTA CATEQUTICA Misal Romano

Jeremas 23:5a
