VOL.

4 AUGUST 4-5, 2012ISSUE 32

Welcome to Good Shepherd Chapel

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture But Moses told them, "This is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat." (Exodus 16:15) Man ate the bread of angels, food he sent them in abundance. (Psalm 78:24) and put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth. (Ephesians 4:24) Jesus answered... "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." (John 6:29) Reflection Do you believe like Moses in the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. Do you believe that the bread of angels is sent to you in abundance? Do you receive the Eucharist and Reconciliation as often as you are able? What does it mean, put on the new self? How do you become enabled to believe in and be one with Jesus? I am a dwelling place. I am not alone. In the secret depths of my poor human substance is the presence of God. Not a God who is solitary but a God who is Trinity, a God who is love. A God who is Father, a God who is Son, A God who is Holy Spirit. But a God made one by love. And a God whose love enables me to become one with him: that you may be one as you, Father, are in me, and I am in you, I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me (John 17:21). I believe that no moment exists for man that is more important, more beautiful, more dramatic, more decisive, more radical than the moment when he becomes aware of or, rather, lives this reality. What Does it Mean to Walk in the Spirit. Written by Pete Miller

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Galatians 5:25)

Page 5

The phrase Walk in the Spirit refers to lifestyle. In Biblical terms, to walk means to conduct oneself in a particular manner; pursue a particular course of life. This concept is introduced in Genesis where it specifically says that "Enoch walked with God" and "Noah walked with God." God revealed and communicated information to them, and they heard His voice and obeyed His instructions. "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going." (Hebrews 11:8) God spoke to Abraham, and Abraham heard and literally obeyed His words. Christians can learn to walk with God just like the men of God in Bible times. "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16) People are programmed from infancy to walk in and according to "The lust of the flesh," according to their selfish thoughts, desires and feelings. When a person receives Jesus Christ as Lord and becomes a Christian, the Bible says to learn how to walk in the Spirit, no longer living like unbelievers who do not know the Lord. Ephesians says, "that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind." Ephesians teaches to "walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise." 'Circumspectly' means accurately, precisely or exactly. Christians are to learn to walk correctly according to God's revealed Word. The following are basic principles required to walk in or by the Spirit. Study the Word of God."Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth." (2 Timothy 2:15) (Amplified Bible) Pray. Focus on worshiping and praising God, and be ready to pray for people and situations. Paul encourages all Christians to be "praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints." (Ephesians 6:18) "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." (Philippians 4:6) Become Meek. Meekness is cooperating with God, yielding to His direction and methods. "Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth." (Numbers 12:3 KJV) Deuteronomy says that the Lord knew Moses face to face, and, by revelation, Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible. Obey God. Obedience goes hand in hand with meekness. Do not add to, modify or delete any of what God has said. "Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams." (1 Samuel 15:22) Do not argue with God. Compare Jonah with Ananias in Acts 9. Do not be deceived by the five senses or feelings. "For we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7) "For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) Wait on the Lord. This does not mean to sit around and do nothing. Waiting on the Lord means to keep believing, keep reading or praying. Be patient. Do not jump the gun, or get ahead of God.

Bible Study on the Book of Nahum by Amy Miller

Scores of inhabitants of the kingdoms of Canaan fell before the mighty Assyrian Army, including the people of the northern kingdom of Israel. While other kingdoms were merely political pawns, Israel's destruction was due to their incessant rebellion and wickedness that God had tolerated for many generations. Although God is slow to anger and abounding in mercy, He will not ignore sin forever. Israel's depth of iniquity had reached its peak and God lifted His hand of protection from them as the Assyrians came in from the east and stormed Samaria's gates. The Assyrians were a tool in the hand of God to bring about consequences on Israel that were due to them. But The Assyrian army went too far in their judgment of Israel, battering its people far beyond what God had intended. They overstepped their boundaries, and God was angry. For the nation of Assyria, evil was not just a passing fancy; it was their way of life. They embodied the sins that God hates the most: deceit, theft, pride and no sense of value for human life. They grew increasingly wealthy by exploiting the nations they defended and plundering the nations they conquered. They were a greedy and bloodthirsty empire that soon took over almost all of the entire known world at that time. The Assyrians were a brutal nation too. They mercilessly invaded surrounding nations, burning homes, killing innocent people, and taking away numerous captives as trophies of their conquests. The Assyrian army took over city after city, continually expanding its territory and increasing in political power. The wealth secured from the regions they conquered fueled their ongoing military campaigns. They were known for their bloody war tactics and their unstoppable chariots, striking fear in all who stood in their way. King Sennacherib of Assyria wrote about one occasion: At the command of the god Ashur, the great Lord, I rushed upon the enemy like the approach of a hurricane...I put them to rout and turned them back. I transfixed the troops of the enemy with javelins and arrows...I cut their throats like sheep...My prancing steeds, trained to harness, plunged into their welling blood as into a river; the wheels of my battle chariot were bespattered with blood and filth. I filled the plain with corpses of their warriors like herbage. (Wikipedia) God is a mighty defender and righteous Judge. Unruly nations did not go unpunished and Assyria was no exception. But their judgment was not only based on their abhorrent practices that went against God's laws, but included their abhorrent practices that drove them to both terrorize and destroy Gods chosen people. The message from the prophet Nahum spoke very clearly that God was going to avenge His enemies. The Assyrians could not escape the judgment to come. The mighty nation was soon to be completely wiped out, never to rise again. Unlike other prophetic books before it, the book of Nahum does not include a message of hope for the one receiving it. But for the people of Israel, it was a message of life and deliverance. To know that God was moving heaven and earth to defend His people, and that their greatest enemy would be crushed brought great joy and celebration. In the next book of the Old Testament, a bold prophet implores God for answers to the evils around him. Habakkuk, moved by love for his people and trust for his God, cries out for God to intervene, to save Judah from destruction and preserve the honorable name of God. Movie Review
Step Up Revolution
By Adam Shaw Catholic News Service
NEW YORK (CNS) -- One adage holds that it's best to stick to what you're good at. It's too bad screenwriter Amanda Brody didn't take that advice on board when writing "Step Up Revolution" (Summit). This fourth installment of the steamy dance and romance franchise -- which began with 2006's "Step Up" -- continues to showcase the kind of top-notch choreography to which fans who dig fine shindigging have become accustomed. Instead of providing a light plot to match the lively steps of the dance numbers, though, "Revolution" wanders off into risible pretentiousness. Stony-faced exchanges about protesting this and that and "breaking the rules" are more likely to make audiences cringe than reflect. Throw in some risque routines -- as well as a few turns of phrase too salty for the youngsters who would otherwise probably enjoy this outing the most -- and the fun is dampened still further. The hackneyed plot focuses on Miami urbanite Sean (Ryan Guzman). Along with his best friend since childhood, Eddy (Misha Gabriel), Sean runs a flash-mob group known -- imaginatively -- as "The Mob." Their version of the fad sees this ensemble of highly skilled dancers, musicians and artists suddenly appearing out of nowhere, providing their chosen audience with a jaw-dropping performance to be recorded on cell phones and immortalized on YouTube, and then vanishing. With fame and possible fortune looming, Sean encounters the equally fleet of foot Emily (Kathryn McCormick), who's out to audition her way into the prestigious Wynwood Dance Company. Needless to say, when hoofer meets hoofer, it's kismet. Pouty Em is busy rebelling against her millionaire father, Bill (Peter Gallagher), who, sensibly enough, wants her to abandon her long-shot dreams of becoming a professional dancer and go back to college. Geez, Dad, what are you thinking? When they discover that Bill -- heartless capitalist that he is -- plans to redevelop local land and raze their downscale neighborhood in the process, the truculent troupe, Emily included, go into Occupy mode. They plan a campaign of "protest art" to fight against the forces of conformity. Ostensibly of-the-moment references to social media and online hits, alas, fail to make this story any less stale than it sounds. So in lieu of a fun-filled whirl across the dance floor, Brody and first-time director Scott Speer give us a surfeit of half-baked political posturing and self-indulgent sentimentality. While the relationship between the two leads remains wholesome, that's not an adjective that could be used to describe the pseudo-sexual style of public grinding they favor. They leave no room for daylight, much less the Holy Spirit. The film contains much highly suggestive dancing, a single censored rough term and occasional crude and crass utterances. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -- adults. Retrieved from http://www.catholicnews.com/

Food for the Poor

As often as you did it at least to one of My brothers and Sisters, you did it to meMatthew 25:40 Food For The Poor is the thirdlargest international relief and development charity in the United States, feeding 2 million poor every day. Rev. Jarboe will be visiting all the masses on October 27-28 to talk about this organization, and its Christian relief programs and projects. Please know that we have a designated offering that weekend for this organization, but also, there will be envelopes in your pews for those parishioners interested in making private donations. We ask you to listen to Rev. Jarboes message and be generous.

Pro-Life Mass & Rosary

For your information, there is a Mass the first Saturday of each month at Saint Mary on the Hill, 9:15 am followed by a Pro-Life Rosary at Preferred Health Center right after (approximately 10:15am). This activity is NOT organized by our parish, but you are invited to participate to support the Right to Life.
