A Golden Moment
As millions of people watch the Olympics held in London, they will be cheering their nations athletes. Two hundred and five countries have sent their best seeking to win a medal and hopefully have a golden moment on the winners stand. The English are proud of their $14.5 billion project that has revitalized east London, to show the whole world that we can come together as a United Kingdom, announced Prime Minister David Cameron. London first held its games in 1908 and introduced the first Olympic swimming pool. It was also the first time for the participants to march into the stadium by nationality at the opening ceremony. It was the first time for a black athlete to win an Olympic gold medal - U.S. runner John Taylor. Though not a track athlete, we truly believe that Forrest Head, our Senior Associate Pastor, has fought the good fight and finished the course that God had for him in this ministry (2 Timothy 4:7). He has run side by side with me over these 15 years as a close friend and co-laborer in Christ. We have truly been blessed with a Dream Team in recent years of outstanding leaders and ministers. Some day they will receive the true golden reward for their faithful service, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to them on that day (2 Timothy 4:8). I am so grateful that Forrest has faithfully been with me, useful to me for service, just like Luke and Mark were to Paul (2 Timothy 4:11). He has used his many skills to advance the cause of Christ so that the proclamation might be fully accomplished (2 Timothy 4:17). Like two-time Olympic fencing champion, Mariel Zagunis, who carried our U.S. flag in the opening ceremony, Forrest has carried the banner of this ministry and been a problem-fixer and a peace-maker. He has served capably in developing our middle school, young marrieds, missions, outreach, and worship ministries. He has led us to the place where we now have 100 ministries, most of which he was involved with in a firsthand way. His happy, outgoing personality and love for the Lord have been an incredible blessing to us, not to mention his outstanding singing. As we say goodbye to Forrest, Charlene, Jonathan, and Dane this weekend, we will be praying for them as they serve together in his new ministry with Big Life. As they continue to plant churches around the world and develop discipleship ministries, we will pray for them to find residence in northern Georgia and that the children will have a smooth transition. Forrests job description was uniquely built around his many gifts and talents, so we are being cautious about filling that position and continuing to pray for God to also give us a Pastor of Education and Discipleship. I know that I can say with thousands in our church, Forrest, you will be greatly missed, my fellow worker in Christ, who has worked hard, and is beloved. You truly are a choice man in the Lord (Romans 16:3, 6, 8, 12, 13). We love you.
Dr. Hayes Wicker Senior Pastor
