Thames Sailing Club Portsmouth Road, Surbiton KT6 4HH The Club offers a fascinating insight into a past world. A playground for the rich, built on a tip, yet touched by royalty from Queen Victoria to present royal family. The boats sailed include a fleet which includes boats over a 100 years old. Emmanuel Church 1 Grand Avenue, Tolworth KT5 9HU Emmanuel was dedicated in 1935. By 1941 it was already too small, and in 1956 modernist architect, Kenneth Wood was engaged to extend the church and give it greater prominence. He retained the 1935 structure allowing it to remain visible beneath a large timber frame, designed to connect the original church to a new church hall. A short film on the architect will be shown. All Saints Church Market Place, Kingston KT1 1JP Kingstons only Grade I listed building. A church has been on this site since Anglo-Saxon times and several Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned on this site. The current church mostly dates back to 14th and 15th centuries; later additions include a Georgian tower and pierson flint facing, 14th century wall painting and many monuments. Church of St. Mary the Virgin Church Lane, Chessington KT9 2LB Chessingtons hidden treasure, a rural hilltop chapel until 20th century urban development. Grade II. St Marys was first mentioned in Merton Priory records of 1174. Early Nottingham alabaster of the Annunciation and unusual wooden pillars were inserted when the south aisle was added in 1870. Seething Wells Waterworks and the Defeat of King Cholera Meet at Fox and Hounds Portsmouth Road Surbiton KT6 4 HS A unique site in the history of public health and epidemiology. The Lambeth Waterworks was established in Seething Wells in 1852 and it was water from these works that John Snow used to prove that cholera was waterborne. See the surviving Lambeth and Chelsea Waterworks buildings as well as the filter beds alongside the Thames, now home to a rich biodiverse wildlife. Greek Orthodox Church of St. George the Martyr Borough Road, Kingston KT2 6BD Church established in Kingston in 1964. The present building, a former primary school, was converted to form a church, school annex and a community hall. A bell tower has been added. Barnfield Youth and Community Centre Parkfields Road, Kingston KT2 5LL Designed by Kenneth Wood for RBK Youth Service as a social and activity centre for young people. Completed in 1969 and awarded a Civic Trust commendation, it is an example of a high quality low cost building. It is used by a variety of community groups. The Ivy Conduit Holy Cross Preparatory School George Road, Kingston KT2 7NU The Ivy Conduit, part of the water system that supplied Hampton Court Palace in Tudor times, is situated in the grounds of the school. The old school building will be partially open to visit. An Adventure Trail and Victorian fish-ponds should appeal to children. Lovekyn Chapel London Road, Kingston KT2 6PY Medieval chantry chapel founded in 1309 which became home to a school (then called Queen Elizabeths Grammar School) in 1561. This Grade II* building remains the property of Kingston Grammar School. The oldest complete building in Kingston, and thought to be the only surviving free-standing chantry chapel in the country. St. Raphaels Catholic Church Portsmouth Road, Kingston KT1 2NA The church was built in the 1840s, listed Grade2*. Regarded as one of the finest examples of Victorian Italianate architecture in the UK. As Leopold of Saxe Coburg lived nearby there were four royal weddings in St. Raphaels. Archive material on show. The Bentall Centre Management Suite, 2nd floor, Wood Street, Kingston KT1 1TP The Bentall Centre celebrated its 19th birthday last year. It has a spectacular atrium and Aston Webb faade, inspired by Wrens design for Hampton Court. The Centres timeless design and the 2000 fibre optic lights contained in the perforated white metalwork creates a light, airy, smoke-free environment for shopping. Warren House Conference Centre Warren Road, Kingston Hill KT2 7HY Warren House is a Grade II listed Victorian property with 4 acres of grounds. Hillcroft College South Bank, Surbiton KT6 6DF The College is housed in a Victorian mansion house built in the 1860s for Frederick Bryant of Bryant and May Matches. The building is very typical of its time and retains many of its original features. Margaret Bryants interest in birds, flowers and astrology is very evident in the stained glass and pargetting. Tiffin School Queen Elizabeth Road, Kingston KT2 6RL Tiffin is a boys grammar school, now an academy. Foundation dates back to 1638. School opened on the Fairfield in 1880 and moved to present site in 1929. It includes a Grade II listed 18th century house, a school hall with three War Memorials and VC plaque, an award winning learning resource centre and school archive room. Friday Tours 11.15 & 14.00. Surbiton Masonic Hall Glenmore House, 6 The Crescent, Surbiton KT6 4BN Glenmore House was constructed in 1840 and is a fine example of the architectural transition from late Georgian to early Victorian, being one of the first substantial family homes to be built in Surbiton. Used by many local groups and charities, it has been home to the local Freemasons since 1920. Guided tours of the building. St. Marks Church St Marks Hill, Surbiton KT6 4LS A church with a traditional exterior and a surprising modern interior. Built in 1844 destroyed by an oil bomb in 1940, rebuilt in 1960 with stained glass and unusual font showing Jesus baptizing a multitude in Jordan. Notable altar frontals.
