CCCCs 2012 Summer of Solar Science Program for Middle School Students is All About the Sun This

Year.
For the third summer, Cape Cod Community College is hosting a hands-on weeklong science and technology program for students entering grades 6, 7, and 8. From August 13-17, Summer of Solar Science students will explore the structure and dynamics of the sun with a team of highly trained and experienced teachers. Far more than a typical camp, students will follow a carefully developed educational program and blend experiential learning with great fun. The adventure will include activities like planet hunting, comet tracking, and spectral analysis. Under the guidance and direction of College faculty and associates, students will also build a spectrograph, a sun spotter, and solar tracker. Summer of Science students will explore real world problem-solving scenarios and work in teams on design challenges. Participants will use computer-based data collection and analysis tools, and have the chance to gain experience by really doing science, not just watching someone elses demonstration. The campus community, friends, and family are invited to join us on the last day as students share their weeks work during the ice cream social and awards ceremony. Every day will be packed with opportunities to learn, explore, and make new friends with a similar interest in science and technology! Cape Cod Community College is committed to making this program affordable to anyone. Summer of Solar Science presented at 4Cs costs only $200 for the week, which includes snacks, lunch, and all equipment necessary for the week of learning. Further, through the generosity of a private donor, scholarships are still available to those that reside in the Town of Barnstable and families are encouraged to inquire about them. A downloadable application can be found at: www.capecod.edu/summerofscience. The Summer of Science program will run from 9am to 4pm on August 13-17 at Cape Cod Community College's West Barnstable campus in the Lyndon P. Lorusso Applied Technology Building. Exit 6 off the Mid-Cape Highway (Rte. 6) 1/4 mile north on Iyannough Rd. For more information, please contact Jennifer True (508) 375-5011 or email jtrue@capecod.edu
