If youre a shopaholic or junkyard hound, join the hundreds of thousands who wouldnt miss this 675-mile fun-filled experience every August, beginning on the first Thursday of the month. Between August 2 and 5, 2012, you will meet interesting people, enjoy stunning vistas, a variety of entertainment, and discover backroad cultural wonders in some of our most beautiful states, all while shopping until you drop.

August National Calendar

1 - Sept. 9: State Fairs predominate this month - see page 2 for separate article about some of the most popular ones. 27 (Jul) - Aug 12: The London 2012 Summer Olympic Games Opened July 27th and run until August 12th with an expected 10,500 athletes from 204 nations. From archery, through diving and swimming to water polo in Londons Summer Olympics 2012, www.GraphicNews.com is sharing their comprehensive infographics of each sport.

From Gadsden, Alabama, to Hudson, Michigan, the roadmap takes you along the Lookout Mountain Parkway and U.S. 127 Corridor. It is considered the biggest and best event of its kind anywhere. It began in 1987. Reader's Digest named the Parkway one of America's most scenic drives. The event has been featured on HGTV, in Southern Living, USA Today, Newsweek and The Tonight Show. As many as 5,000 vendors line the route on vacant land, parking lots, in community centers, and in the yards of homeowners showcasing everything from antiques, furniture and collectibles, to anything else that might appeal to you. "One mans junk is another mans treasure" holds true. Homeowners sell fresh garden produce and homemade jams and jellies, as well as some of their own "garage sale" items. Plan to take your camera, water, plenty of cash, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes and a rolling cart.

CHALK TALK
Fun Ways to Get Fit (Inspired by the Olympics ^.^) Racewalking is a form of walking where the participants
swivel and tilt their hips to lengthen their strides. It is distinguished from running by the requirement that at any time at least one foot has contact with the ground. Speeds often equal those of slow runners. In competition, racewalkers are expected to maintain good form and are penalized for bending the knee as it passes under the body or having no foot-to-ground contact. Fitness-wise, mile for mile, it is said to be equal in caloric output to running.

Science Matters Schools to focus on science
The federal government has created new standards for science. Studies show that eighth-graders' science scores were nearly flat from 2009 to 2011. One international study shows that 15year-olds ranked average among industrial nations in science and just below Hungary. The National Teachers Association hopes families will start talking at home about science and about science and technology careers.

Long Jump is a track and field event in which athletes

combine speed, strength, and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a take off point. This event has been an Olympic medal event since the first modern Olympics in 1896 and has a history in the Ancient Olympic Games and can be a fun event for your next trip to the beach. If youre looking for more outdoor fun, see out Relay Race Ideas and Mini Olympic Sports under our Junior Sports category in the right menu of the website: www.buzzingkidsworld.com.

FOCUS ON FUN
Table Hockey comes back
Long before video games became popular (if you're old enough to remember), dad, brother and his pals played table hockey. Though video games almost drove it entirely out of the game scene, it's making a comeback in the United States and in Canada. It's played at home, in basements, and in bars where tournaments offer such prizes as a year's supply of beer. The game is drawing many younger men and women. While it's a throwback to the 1970s in the United States, in Europe it never went away.

Catch a Fairy
Some say theres no such thing as a garden fairy, and they might be right, because no one has ever really caught one. Still, if you build just the right fairy house, you might be the first to catch one. It could happen! We dont know much about fairies but we do know they are tiny. They love plants and small private places in the garden and if you are ever going to catch a fairy: 1st - Find a secret place. Look for an old tree stump for your fairy world. Or maybe a flat rock or a hidden place by a pond or a big flower pot on a balcony. 2nd - Youll need to make a fairy house. Fairies like tiny houses. Look for an old box or an old piece of wood with a hole in it. Or maybe even an old bird house (make sure birds are not using it, though.) 3rd - Once you have your house, youll want to make it private with a rock wall or maybe some plants so that a passing mouse wont try to move in. 4th - Next add plants and maybe some tiny toys that a fairy might like. Make a comfy place for the fairy to lounge around outside. 5th - Maybe you need a sidewalk leading to your fairy house. What could you use? Finally, every single fairy world needs a secret entrance. Only you can know where!

Cardboard Fort
I found an empty cardboard box. I made myself a fort. I had to squeeze and twist and turn and crumple and contort to climb inside, but now I'm quite embarrassed to report I'm stuck inside this cardboard box that's clearly much too short. Has anybody got a box that's bigger than a quart?

PET PEEVES
Run or Walk? Healthy retrievers and herding dogs will happily run or swim all day long, while others (particularly short-nosed breeds like bulldogs and pugs) are not built for sustained exertion. A heavy-boned dog like a Saint Bernard can't handle a lot of running the way a light-boned dog like a greyhound can, say veterinarians quoted in the Ladies Home Journal. Dog Haircuts? Dogs release heat through their tongues and sweat through their paw pads, not through their skin, so a shorter coat will not make them cooler. Consider having the dog's belly shaved. When he lies on a cool surface, the coolness will travel through his body.
