Vote August 7
A Primary Election will be held on August 7. Please remember to vote. Those who vote at the polls will have to show a photo identification. For more information about Election Day and voting, please contact the Office of City Clerk Ellen CraigBragg at (734) 942-7540.

Health Fair
Save the date: The Romulus Senior Center will host a Health and Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 10. For lote more info, see next months newsletter or visit Rose Swidan at the Senior Center.

Senior Olympics
Romulus seniors made a proud showing in the 2012 Senior Olympics. These photos are from the opening ceremonies. Medal winners will be posted in the September 2012 editon of the Communicator senior newsletter. Congratulations to all participants. Rose Conde (left) competed in ping pong. Marie Charles (right) took part in darts (and ping pong, too).

Motor City Casino


Romulus seniors are invited to visit the Motor City Casino on Tuesday, August 21. A bus leaves at 9 a.m. from the Romulus Senior Center. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. For more information, call (734) 955-4120.

New Drop Box


A new curbside drop box outside Romulus City Hall allows residents to pay a bill or deliver city correspondence without leaving their cars. Mayor Alan R. Lambert said the convenience is meant for seniors and other residents who can now take care of city business any time of the day or night and on weekends without entering City Hall. The drop box is monitored weekdays by the Treasurers Office. Payments cannot include cash.

Game Days and Exercise Class


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. Pokeno is played at noon Fridays. A new stress-free chair exercise class has been added to the Thursday schedule, starting at 9:30 a.m. To register, call the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

Romulus Animal Shelter Bingo


The annual bingo that raises money for the Romulus Animal Shelter will take place September 14-16 at the Romulus Senior Center. The bingo wll be held during the annual Romulus DDA Pumpkin Festival. Bingo hours will be Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Thank you to all of those who support the Animal Shelter.

Bingo Cruise Sold Out


The August 20 Senior Bingo Cruise on the Portofino Friendship boat is sold out. Have fun, Romulus seniors!

Healthy Eating series starts August 23


The Senior Alliance will present a series on Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays, starting August 23. Incorporate exercise as part of their life Set and meet personal goals Problem solve

The six-weekly sessions last 2 hours and include a half hour break for the congregate meal program. The topics: Week 1 MyPlate and Exercise Week 2 Grains, Vegetables, Fruits The program uses the USDAs and Water MyPlate as a framework and Week 3 Meat, Eggs, Legumes, includes recommendations for Milk and Exercise combining physical activity with Week 4 Fats and Sweets good nutrition. Week 5 Grocery Shopping Participants learn strategies to help: Week 6 Meal Preparation Identify nutritious food choices Discover healthy cooking methods For more information about the Healthy Eating program, call (734) Read food labels 727-2060. Determine portion sizes Healthy Eating is a program for seniors who want to learn more about how nutrition and lifestyle changes can promote better health.

Good times at the Romulus Senior Center

Officials from the city, school district and court joined Romulus seniors at the Senior Center for an indoor picnic and ice cream social. Mayor Alan R. Lambert and other officials passed out hot dogs, chips, ice cream, other food and prizes. Representatives from United Healthcare distributed goodies.

Furlough Day
The Romulus Senior Center will be closed Friday, August 17, which is an unpaid city furlough day.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Special Caregiver Support Meeting


A presentation on The Alzheimers Journey is set for 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, August 23, at the Romulus Senior Center. Participants will receive helpful information and assistance. Caregiver Support Group meetings are usually the fourth Wednesday of the month. The schedule has changed for August only. The group is provided by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency for people who care for those with Alzheimers disease and dementia. There is no charge. Cookie Contest Winners


Glenda Claston (seated, left), Lana Mortzfield and Vickie Mawby are the 2012 honorees in the cookie baking contest at the Romulus Senior Towers.
