Why this Workshop


This is a boom time for construction of healthcare facilities. As hospital buildings from another era fall to changing standards of medical care, and the demands of patients and providers, healthcare organizations determined to stay competitive face making a huge investment in accommodating these demands. They want to know that the hospital projects they commission will help them meet the challenges they face. Architects, planners and others involved in planning healthcare facilities have a chance in todays environment to create a highly competitive healthcare facilitya facility that can improve patient satisfaction keep healthcare workers productive and professionally satisfied accommodate new technology improve facility image and competitive position But what informs their efforts? How do existing guidelines and evidence-based claims help healthcare professionals and designers reach effective solutions? What do they see in their professional practice that suggests how the hospital of tomorrow should look and run? The workshop will focus on these issues.

Intensive, Hands-on Planning and Design Experience


This workshop invites you to rethink the healthcare facility planning process and provides you an opportunity, literally, to test and put into practice your planning and design knowledge and skills. You will explore hospital environments with the people who use hospitals. Learn what patients consider important for effective functioning of healthcare facilities. You will participate with a diversified panel of care providers, patient advocates, and administrators. Gain unique insights critically important in hospital planning and design. You will explore tools for structuring effective healthcare environments. Discuss evidence-based information that you can use. The dynamic core of the workshop will be a day-long hands-on planning and design session. Plan to work within a team to develop solutions based on actual project requirements. A jury of healthcare professionals, planners/ designers and workshop participants will critique design solutions. Learn from diversified, highly experienced and qualified workshop leaders and from your fellow participants.

This highly interactive part of the workshop will challenge your design skills by providing you with an opportunity to be involved in hospital design based on actual project requirements. The workshop participants will be divided into design teams. Each design team will be assigned to one of several realworld hospital design problems. Each design team will be asked to develop a solution that will be evaluated by a panel of health professionals and designers. You will learn from experienced professionals who will be working with you during this part of the workshop and from the wealth of experience of other workshop participants.
