Organization History Established in 1970 as a privately owned clinic, TCA Health, provides a range of primary health care services, preventive health screenings, health education, and social services. We serve an urban population in the far south-side Chicago communities of Riverdale, Pullman, West Pullman, Roseland, and the bordering Cook County suburban communities of Blue Island, Calumet Park, Dolton, Harvey, Markham, and Riverdale Township. Since 1991, we have been a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Today, sitting adjacent to the Altgeld-Murry Homes Development at Ellis Avenue and 130th Street, the 23,300 square-foot clinic provides quality health care to more than 8,500 patients a year. We offer services in family medicine, internal medicine, dental, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, employment services, licensed clinical social worker, School Based Health Center, Healthy Start, nutritional counseling, breast feeding counseling, immunizations and WIC.

Making the Ask: Proposals

Proposal writing is something that requires planning, forethought and research before you actually sit down to write a proposal. After all, you dont want to spend all that time writing a proposal only to find out that something is wrong with it and you dont have time to rewrite it before the deadline.

What is the maximum amount of funding you provide? Visit your funders website or give them a phone call and find out how much money they normally grant. What types of programs or work do you fund? Every foundation or funding body has their areas of interest. As a grant writer it is your job to find out what that is. It will help you to mold your proposal to the type of work they support. When is the deadline for submission of proposals? This is crucial, especially if it is your first time applying for a grant with this funder.

Making the Ask: Proposals

How many proposal submission deadlines do you have per year? In case you cant make this deadline, there may be another a few months later that might be an easier deadline for you to meet.
What do you think of my idea? Dont be afraid to ask a funder what they think. They are always more than willing to provide you with feedback. They will tell you if your idea wont work for them. This is important to know before you put all the time and effort into writing a proposal.

Is there a particular format that you like submission proposals to follow? Often funders have a template or guide as to how they want your proposal submitted. But there are still some out there that dont have a template, so be prepared for that too, even though it is rare.
