Integrated Design is a capstone subject designed to impart real engineering skills:

To provide a framework for behaving as a professional engineer To build upon skills taught, learnt and understood to date To teach generic skills outside the technical skills To provide a overall approach to engineering design not just a process To understand the process of preliminary design and sensibility checking To develop understanding of Quality Assurance To impart engineering Gut feel

What is a professional engineer ?

A professional engineer is a problem solver who can listen, interpret, understand, formulate the objectives and solve the problems to develop a solution. Engineers make things happen Other professionals act for one person to create, engineers act for the community to create Engineers are responsible to the community first and the client second

NIDA Process
Need (problem formulation): what exactly does the client require? Idea (conceptual design): what are the possible ways to meet these requirements? Decision (preliminary analysis and selection of preferred options): which of these possible ways will be best? Cheapest, best looking, most long lasting? Action (implementation, detailed design, documentation): having selected one or a few preferred options, the designer must decide details of layout, sizes of components etc, and then document this information so it can be built.

Your Direction

Structural design Civil design Project management Construction Geotechnical Mining Local government Research

Regardless of you final direction the skill imparted in integrated design will be applicable in all avenues of engineering.

Professional framework

Engineers have a unique position in society in Queensland because they are governed by the Professional engineers act. This provides the framework of authority and responsibility The Building Code of Australia provides the performance criteria for the professional and calls up all the SAA codes of practice other performance requirements Government ( local, state and federal set design standards and requirements

Engineers responsibilities

The engineer holds the lives of thousands of people in their professional hands unlike doctors who hold one at a time The government ( through the Local Government Act) holds the engineer accountable by requiring the engineer to sign off on all designs undertaken and to sign of on the installed conformity to that design This happens through government registration of engineers RPEQ All plans and certifications carry the Registered Professional Engineers registration number of the individual engineer ( not the company) This is lifetime liability and responsibility

Communication and the engineer

The engineers job is 90% communication. Just think about that! Here are some of the duties that the engineer will be required to perform:Briefings with client , design teams, stakeholders Confirmations of instructions Undertake calculations Draw plans Write reports Send accounts Engineering is all about communication. It is the most important attribute of the engineer.

Start with the end in mind

If you only take this principle and internalise it you will become a very good engineer and a very effective person

START WITH THE END IN MIND!!! This is the basis of all Quality assurance
For example:You are going to visit a friend in Brisbane. How do you get there? You want to design a stadium or a three storey walk up. How do you get there?

Conceptual Design 3 Storey Walk-up What do we need to consider?

What information will we need to undertake the design

Architectural plans
Plan, side view etc. Cross sections

Soils report what is the soil strength Some specifications from the client:- a brief Material availability Standards to adhere to Any more?

What do we need to consider when undertaking the design?

Loads Dead, Live, Wind, Snow, Earthquakes etc. Load combinations Load distribution in the structure Sizing beam and column members Cross Sections How things will fit together capacity footings, piles etc. Construction materials used? How to build? Steel reinforcement design how much and where But before we plunge in and start designing lets start at the beginning

First communicate
I am a client who wishes in build a building on a particular site with the following brief:- What are the :Size of the offices Size of ablution blocks Number of storeys Car parking spaces required Services requirements Driveways and external pavement Entry requirements Egress requirements The engineer will need to clearly interpret what is required of him and confirm the brief to the client with the framework for their contract obligations.

Offer of services
Before the engineer can start any processes he will need to put a proposal to the client to see if what he has understood has any relevance to the client. This offer is commonly called an contract offer and will not become a contract until the client accepts it either verbally or in writing. This is starting with the end requirements in mind and is the first part of the QA process. The basic elements of an engineering services fee proposal are as follows:Confirmation of the brief:- what the client wants Description of services offered in detail:- scope of service Program for delivery:- when the client wants it Fee proposal:- how much is the remuneration Terms of payment:- when to be remunerated Other terms of the offer Skills offered:- selling yourself

START WITH THE END IN MIND AND COMMUMICATE

TASK
Prepare and hand in week 3 your offer of consulting engineering services as if you are the consulting engineer. The offer should be in letter form and should contain all the elements that have been discussed today.

The client has told you:I want an office block of 16 storeys. The building must have 3 lifts and no basement carparking. However the carpark should be located on ground around the building. The architect will be DBI and all other design services are open to tender. Provide me with a fee proposal for this project so that I may choose the best consulting engineer to undertake the project for his purposes.

Summary

Integrated design is the assembly of all your acquired knowledge and skills bolted together in the delivery of all aspects of the design process in a consulting engineering office framework. The use of design aids will be encouraged. Remember if the task is getting too complicated with calculations you are on the wrong track. The subject is not about detail but rather imparting skills in the formulation and solution of problems Dont start design until you have a clear picture of the design outcome. Start with the end in mind. The basis of the QA is confirmation at every step in the design process Communication is the key to good engineering

Structural behaviour

To be a good engineer you will need to understand structural behaviour This is called gut feeling and needs to be developed by all engineers in their field of endeavour To test this gut feel and ability a quiz will be conducted now
