Strategic Planning
Third Stage

Coming to Rochester Fall 2012 World without Genocide

Watch for more information at www.rochester.k12.mn.us after September 1. After the Holocaust the world said never again, yet those words have come to mean over and over again. Although there are many complicated reasons why genocides happen, there is one simple reason: we let them happen. We believe that ordinary people have the power to create a world without genocide. Tents of Witness: Genocide and Conict is a multimedia, multicultural, multigenerational exhibit designed to educate people about genocide; explain the causes and consequences of genocide; present action steps to prevent it; and remember those in our own communities who have ed from these atrocities and whose families and communities have been destroyed. Tents of Witness features ten 8 x 12 painted canvas tents that simulate those used in refugee camps. The tents each depict the story of different groups persecuted based on their identity: race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin. The stories are of the conicts suffered by the Jews and others targeted in the Holocaust; Native Americans; and the catastrophes in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, North Korea, Darfur, Argentina, Sri Lanka, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Each tent represents the diversity and beauty of each place and people. The exhibit illustrates clearly that no people or place has been immune from such atrocities. Cosponsored with the Diversity Council and IMAA.

Rochester Public Schools are currently in the third stage of strategic planning. This stage develops a plan that addresses the action (the 'how') and measurements ('how well are we doing') to meet the strategic objectives. You are now invited to nominate yourself, or others, to be part of the third stage of strategic planning by serving on the Measurement Team or an Action Team. Each team will consist of 8-10 individuals that reect the diversity of our community and express an interest in measurement or a particular strategy. Teams will meet on the following dates and times. Team members must be able to commit to all days. Measurement Team: September 27 and 28, 2012; January 15 and 16, 2013; 7:30 AM-4:30 PM Action Teams: October 1, November 5, December 3, December 5, 2012; January 17, 2013; 7:30 AM-4:30 PM To be a part of a Strategic Planning team, please ll in the Strategic Planning Nomination Form on the District website at www.rochester.k12.mn.us by September 1, 2012.

History Generational Cycles Stephen Troutman _____________________________________________

Why were the 1950s so "uncomplicated," the 1970s so "turbulent," the 1990s so "cynical," and the 2000s so "divisive"? Looking back to colonial times reveals a repeating cycle, in which those same generational characteristics have played out again and again. We will learn about the characteristics of each generation type and the cycle they inhabit. We will understand where we are today in the cycles, and look more closely at what is predicated for the next 15 years, if we follow the historic patterns. We will also review the research that is the basis for this powerful theory of cultural behavior. 1 Session(s) Sr/Fee $7/$9 ____________________________________________

The orphan trains ran from New York City to many of the mid-western states. Over 200,000 children were "placed out" over a 75-year period of time. Dorothy will share a part of American History which isn't in our history books. The orphan trains were set up to give needy children the opportunity for a better life. It was the prelude to adoption, orphanages, and foster care in the United States. In May 2004, Dorothy published a book, "Burke's Journeys," about one of the early orphan train riders to Indiana. The young man was Andrew H. Burke, who later became a governor of North Dakota. The book was illustrated by Howard Ralston of Rochester. In the era of romantic music, it was the Germans who set the pace. Beethoven was the revolutionary who pioneered a new sense of musical heroism, as manifested dramatically in his overture to Goethe's romantic (and heroic) play Egmont. Max Bruch followed in Beethoven's path, making the violinist a hero in his Violin Concerto No. 1. After resisting composing a symphony until he was 43, Brahms unleashed a masterpiece with his First Symphony, which was immediately dubbed "The Tenth," meaning it was the rst symphony since Beethoven to rank with the master's greatest. We explore this trio of romantic masterworks, each a rst of its kind, as the height of the era. Participants may obtain tickets to the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale concert at a discount. On Veterans Day, we explore music that commemorates the sacrices of American soldiers in serving their country. Gould's American Salute celebrates the most comforting of all war songs, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." From John Williams score to Saving Private Ryan, "Hymn to the Fallen" expresses what we all feel. In The Wound Dresser, John Adams sets Walt Whitman's poem that immortalizes a too long unsung hero of the Civil War. Richard Rodgers' Victory at Sea shows that a Broadway composer can be symphonically descriptive. Though hardly American, Tchaikovsky makes an ultimate tribute to battling soldiers in his 1812 Overture. Participants may obtain tickets to the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale concert at a discount. More and more we hear about the importance of drinking tea. Many people have experienced High Tea. However, High Tea is a misnomer. It comes from eating at a high dining table rather than a low tea table. The English Ceremony of Afternoon Tea dates back to the 1840s as a way to ward off inevitable hunger before dinner. It is less a working class meal and more of an "Event." Today it has become an elegant affair served in many restaurants and hotels across the world. Come and experience this complete three course tea with sandwiches, scones, sweets, and a dessert nale. 1 Session(s) Sr/Fee $20/$25 ____________________________________________

T'ai Chi ChihBeginning Bonnie Sokolov _____________________________________________

T'ai Chi Chih is a series of 19 slow, gentle movements and one pose. The purpose of these movements is to circulate and balance the energy or "Chi" in the body. It is not an exercise program, a martial art, or a religion, but rather a form of moving meditation with benets for body, mind, and spirit. It is easily learned, requires very little practice space, no special clothing, and can be done by anyone regardless of age or physical condition. While benets received vary with the individual, many people report improved balance and exibility; improvement in chronic problems such as blood pressure, arthritis, and bromyalgia; and reduced stress and an over-all sense of well-being and joy in life. 8 Session(s) Fee $49 ____________________________________________
