Linda Combs

The former director of the Van Buren Township Senior Center will be the communitys next supervisor. Linda Combs, 63, was the top vote-getter for supervisor in Tuesdays primary election and

moves on to the Nov. 6 general election unopposed. In unofficial results, Combs carried 36.2 percent of the vote, tallying 1,109 votes, while defeating incumbent Paul White by 50 votes. Whites 1,059 votes amounted to 34.6 percent of the vote. The two other Democratic candidates on the ballot, Larry Fix and Tim Szetela, received 450 votes and 429 votes, respectively. Its a new chapter in our communitys history, Combs said Wednesday. Well go forward from here. She acknowledged that she was

concerned that the potential for a significant vote split among the four supervisor candidates might hurt her chances, and was pleased with the results. Meanwhile, four Van Buren incumbents, Clerk Leon Wright, Treasurer Sharry Budd, and Trustees Phil Hart and Jeff Jahr all Democrats advanced. In the contest for township clerk, Wright received 1,679 votes, compared with opponent Karin LaMothe, who received 1,390 votes.

At times, the public comments or non-agenda portion of a public meeting may be the most interesting, informative and to-thepoint part. A meeting last month of the Belleville Area District Library Board was one such example. The formal agenda items were mostly boilerplate, but the public comments portion focused on the issue: what is the status of the plans for the new library? Area resident and attorney Barbra Miller posed that question from among the audience of about a dozen people to board members, all of whom were present July 10. Library officials confessed they were frustrated by the delays. Library Board chairwoman MJ Dawson said that she had spoken with representatives of the Belleville City Council in February, and asked them whether the city would give to the library the land on which the current library and the adjacent public parking lot is located, to better enable the library
