Lib Dems seek higher fees for English students

In July Liberal Democrat politician Mike Pringle called for devolved bodies such as the Scottish Parliament to charge higher fees for medical students from England. Welsh Liberal Democrats have also been vocal in their support for policies that discriminate against English students. Treforest Labours Mark Beech condemned the Liberal Democrats stance on English students, As an Englishman and former student of Glamorgan I am fed up of how the English are being priced out of an education in Wales, he said, Plaid and the Lib Dems have been active in the Welsh Assembly supporting higher education policies that discriminate against the English Treforest Labour and Glamorgan Labour Students have been active in campaigning against discrimination against English students and have responded to Assembly consultations with statements to that effect.

Treforests Plaid Councillor out of touch with students

Plaid Cymrus Geraint Day, who represents Treforest on Rhondda Cynon Taff Council doesnt know the realities of the majority of people living in Treforest. He says that he couldnt make a meal for 86p, but doesnt seem to realise that some people in Treforest are forced to make a meal for 49p. With most students in Treforest on a very low income, Geraint Day should realise the hardship of some of the people in Treforest that he is supposed to be representing.

Foreign Policy success for Glamorgan Labour Students

Glamorgan Labour Students motion passed by Treforest Labour calling for an ethical foreign policy was supported wholeheartedly by the Minister for the Middle East, Dr Kim Howells, and by the Pontypridd Constituency Labour Party as a whole. It has now received recognition from the national Labour Party as well. We welcome contributions from all students including ones from overseas. To become a member telephone 08705 900 200, or complete the form on the back of this newsletter for a special introductory membership offer of 1.

Treforest Labour active in the community

Every month Treforest has a Partnership and Communities Together (PACT) meeting in which residents of Treforest, including students, can raise problems that they are having in the community and issues. Members of Treforest Labour have been active in these meetings raising issues affecting the community, including issues relating to parking and lack of facilities for young people. One positive thing that has come from these meetings that members of Treforest Labour are active in is a social enterprise to allow students to contribute to the community by teaching young people about sports and the arts. If you would like to get involved in this project or want to find out when the next PACT meeting is, contact Jonathan Bishop on the number opposite or at the address at the bottom of the other side of this leaflet.

Shape the future in Treforest and beyond

Dear Student, Welcome to the Freshers Week edition of Treforest Labours newsletter in conjunction with Glamorgan Labour Students. The Labour members in the Treforest ward meet regularly to discuss a range of issues affecting the community of Treforest, as well as issues of a global nature and we regularly make contributions to government and Labour Party consultations through both the Pontypridd South East Branch and the Pontypridd Constituency Labour Party. Treforest Labour has been successful in campaigning against big supermarkets destroying the village community that students and long standing residents are part of, with organised protests at council offices, active letter writing, and speech making. If you want to be part of a modern socialist party campaigning for social justice then please join us. Jonathan Bishop
Acting Chair, Glamorgan Labour Students Youth Officer, Pontypridd Constituency Labour Party Secretary, Pontypridd South East Branch Labour Party
