Out-of-province fire

crews on standby
Friday, 79 firefighting personnel from
the Yukon, Saskatchewan and Ontario
arrived to assist BC crews with an antic-
ipated increase in fire activity. With the
risk of thunderstorm activity, fire officials
wanted to be ready. 35 of those fire per-
sonnel and one agency representative
from Ontario were deployed to the Kam-
loops Fire Centre.
Forecasted hot and dry conditions for
the weekend instigated a campfire ban
on Friday. As of late Sunday afternoon,
there was little new fire activity reported
the most serious, an interface fire near
Vernon. However thunderstorms were
forecast for overnight.

Public interest in the inquest into the
deaths of the 7 men killed in the Dia-
mond Vale mine disaster was so great
that Mayor Cleasby placed the Central
Hall at the disposal of the coroner, Dr.
Tutill, to accommodate the number of
people expected to attend.

10:30pm on March 20, the jury adjourned to consider their verdict. They returned at
2:30am with the following verdict: The deceased men met their deaths by an explo-
sion caused by gas, combined with coal dust coming into contact with a naked light
in the Diamond Vale Mine on March 7th. We find that gross negligence has been man-
ifest on the part of the management, through not providing efficient equipment and
a disposition to evade the rules as specified in the Coal Mines Regulations Act of 1911.
On September 10, 1912, Benjamin Browitt, manager of Diamond Vale mine was
charged in violation of Section 32 of the CMR Act employing a fireboss who had no
certificate as such. He was fined $30 and costs. He was also charged with gross neg-
ligence and lost his certificate as manager. After the disaster, the mine never really
