Rotary holds member family picnic
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
The Medford-Vincentown Ro-
tary held its members family pic-
nic recently at Johnsons Corner
Farm to celebrate the members of
the club, their families and the
continued involvement in the
community.
The picnic was a great suc-
cess, said current club president
Bob Wardle. The whole purpose
was to get the Medford-Vincen-
town families together for a nice
comfortable evening.
Its a chance to bring the fami-
lies together, its an event for
them. We cooked some burgers
and kids got hayrides, stuff like
that, said Chris Stokes past Ro-
tary president and current mem-
ber of the founding board.
The members gathered at
Johnsons for food, music and
hayrides to celebrate the commu-
nity and those who give back. The
picnic was devoted to the mem-
bers who donate their time to
community projects a majority of
the time.
The Johnsons donated the fa-
cility, the corn eaten at the event
and the hayrides offered to the
guests.
Bill Johnson was a member
for a number of years and he
passed away last year, the family
still wanted to donate, this was

Construction for a new skate
park located in Freedom Park is
slated to begin following the ap-
proval of a grant.
The project is being funded by
a $250,000 grant through the
Burlington County Board of Cho-
sen Freeholders under the Munic-
ipal Park Development Program
authorized in Sept. 2010, accord-
ing to township manager Chris
Schultz.
According to Beth Portocalis,
the director of community affairs
and special assistant to the man-
ager, the skate park originally
constructed in 2000 and was
known as one of the first skate
parks to open in southern N.J.
Through its overuse and tres-
passers, the park faced deteriora-
tion and eventually closed.
It fulfilled its life expectancy
after 10 years because of the bike
trespassers, it was ultimately
torn down for safety reasons,
said Portocalis.
The township had a mainte-
nance and liability issue, having
to tear down the structure,
Schultz said.
To avoid future issues involv-
ing heavy maintenance. The
plans involve accommodations
for both BMX bikers and skate-

police report
The following are reports on
file with the Medford Police De-
partment:
On Aug. 9, at 2:17 p.m., the Med-
ford police, fire and EMS person-
nel responded to Hartford Road,
north of route 70 for a report of a
motor vehicle accident involving
a pedestrian. Upon arrival, the
operator of a disabled vehicle was
lying in the middle of Hartford
Road. Police investigation re-
vealed that the vehicle was
stopped in traffic southbound on
Hartford Road north of route 70.
The operator of the car stepped
out of his vehicle in his lane of
travel due to a malfunction and
was struck by a car originally lo-
cated two vehicles behind the dis-
able vehicle, and traveling south-
bound on Hartford Road in the
northbound left hand turn lane
into the entrance of CVS. The op-
erator of vehicle two was air lift-
ed to Cooper Trauma by the NJSP
Southstar Medevac. This incident
is still under investigation.
On Aug. 11 at approximately
1:40 a.m., police located a stolen
white 2011 Nissan Altima on
Route 70 at Medford-Evesboro
Road. Police were initially dis-
patched to the location, because
the driver of the vehicle had been
located by a passer-by, uncon-
scious and unresponsive. The ve-
hicle was stolen from Enterprise
Rentals out of Pennsauken, and
was entered into the national
database as stolen on Aug 10. The
sole occupant and driver was ar-
rested on scene and charged with
receiving stolen property, driving
while suspended, unlicensed driv-
er, open alcohol in a motor vehi-
cle, impeding the flow of traffic,
and failure to notify MVC of an
address change. She was
released on summons pending
court.
The Medford Township police,
fire and EMS were dispatched to
the intersection of route 70 and
country road 541 for the report of
a motor vehicle accident involv-
ing a motorcyclist. The motorcy-
clist was complaining of left hip
pain. He was treated by Medford
EMS and Virtua paramedics and
transported to Cooper Medical
Center. The police investigation
revealed the driver of the 2010
Toyota Corolla was stopped to at-
tempt a turn from eastbound
route 70 to northbound county
road 541. The motorcyclist was
traveling westbound on route 70
approaching county road 541 on
his 2007 Harley Davidson motor-
cycle. The woman stated she ob-
served the motorcyclist approach-
ing but thought he was making a
left turn. She then attempted to
turn and crossed into the west-
bound lane of route 70 and the ve-
hicles collided. Traffic was direct-
ed around the scene for 30 min-
utes while the accident was

boarders.
The park will be concrete so
BMX bikers and skaters can use
it. It helps to reduce maintenance
costs, Schultz said.
Recently, the insurance compa-
ny representing the township ap-
proved the resolution for the
park, moving the project forward
to its final steps.
They recently had a precon-
struction meeting and will begin
demolition this week, said
Schultz.
Before the construction can
begin, the township must approve
two resolutions at the next town-
ship council meeting.
The approving plan and de-
sign resolution states its up to
todays standards and the insur-
ance has given the approval. And
the second is the liability reduc-
tion. Its is the certification of op-
eration status as an unsupervised
facility, said Schultz.
The park will include signage
advising those using the park
must follow the rules, taking safe-
ty precautions during certain
hours. Skaters and bikers will not
be permitted in the skate at the
same time, and will be given des-
ignated days theyre allowed to
use the park. Additionally, the
proper safety gear will be re-
quired at all times and trespass-
ing after hours will not be tolerat-
ed, nor will trespassing during
construction.
We really need everyones co-
operation. No one can trespass
during construction. If police
catch trespassers, theyll be
cited, Portocalis said.
Its been a long time coming,
getting this project completed and
having this amenity back in the
park, Schultz said.
The resolutions will be ap-
proved at the upcoming township
council meeting on Aug. 21 at 7:30
p.m. at the Public Safety
Building located at 91 Union
Street.

I
f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.

letters to the editor
Romney has fairly paid his
taxes, says writer
Everyday we hear the democratic left
call for more of Mitt Romneys tax return
and complain that his effective tax rate was
less than the average secretary. If you look
at his 2011 return (available on the Inter-
net) his gross income was $20.4 million. He
paid $3.2 million or, an effective rate was 15.
6 percent. Before you raise questions about
this you have to realize that he had zero or-
dinary income like us, which is subject to
the higher tax rates.
Then you have to remember that his in-
come which involves dividends, interest
and capital gains which are taxed at a
much lower rate. Also you have to remem-
ber that even these investments are in a
blind trust (he doesnt have direct day to
day control over them) and he has account-
ants that will look for every opportunity to
minimize his taxes within current tax
laws. Also, unlike most of us the Romneys
are very charitable people. He has always
given at least 10 percent of any income to
support his church. Actually, in 2011 he and
his wife contributed more than $4 million
to his church and other charitable organi-
zations.
Also, like us, he has to pay state and
property taxes, which are deductible from
his federal return. In 2011 these amounted
to 7 percent of his total income. Now peo-
ple say that his parents were very wealthy
and successful and that led to Mitt Rom-
neys current success. Yes, that past for-
tune enabled Mitt Romney to go to the best
schools and gave him a leg up or motiva-
tion to be successful in life. However, when
his father died in 1998 Mitt had already
achieved his own success. He then took the
inheritance from his father and gave it all
to Brigham Young University in honor of
his father.
Therefore, in the future when you read
the articles, such as those from our left
leaning neighbor Michael Reilly, remember
that the republican presidential candidate
has been successful in life, he earned it
himself and not by inheritance, that he has
been extremely charitable with the money
he has earned, and that he has fairly paid
his taxes in line with what is required by
all of us.

OPEN HOUSE
August 26th 1-4pm
Ballet Pointe Tap Jazz Modern Hip-Hop Acrobatics
our first year without him, War-
dle said.
The crowd listened to live
music provided by Flora and
Mike, who donated their time to
the event. The drinks and remain-
ing supplies were provided by the
rotary and paid for utilizing dues
paid by the members.
So much of the time youre
running and have to leave the
kids at home to do things involved
with the rotary, Stokes said. Its
nice, its a picnic event and an in-
formal get together in support of
the families, Stokes said.
We want to spend time togeth-
er, said Jen Segelken, board
member and Rotarian. It gets us
excited about planning new proj-
ects, its what makes us such a
special club.
The most recent project the ro-
tary was involved in, was the
presentation of a total of five
scholarships worth $15,000 from
the Clubs Foundation.
Due to financial strain, the
club was forced to find other
means to assist in the scholarship
fund. The finances awarded were
facilitated through a corporate
grant program through Church
and Dwight of Princeton, the
owners of Arm and Hammer. The
employees contributed the money
through the Giving Grant Pro-
gram, in which those participat-
ing voluntarily removed a portion
their salaries and placed them
into the fund. The most recent do-
nation amounted to $6,000 and
was split between two recipients
of the five awarded the scholar-
ships.
The rotary has two events com-
ing up, as well. On Sept. 19 the ro-
tary will be working with the
Medford police and Our High
School Interact students to host
International Pedals for Progress
and Bike Safety event at John-
sons Corner Farm.
Weve been doing it for a few
years and people bring their bikes
in to donate, and we give them a
form for a tax write off. Following
the event, the bikes are taken
apart and shipped overseas, said
Wardle.
At last years event, the rotary
collected 85 bikes they were able
to donate and ship to Ecuador.
The second event is the Annual
Third Grade Dictionary project
coming up this fall, which bene-
fits 750 students with dictionar-
ies. The dictionaries cost approxi-
mately $3,000 annually.
We handle 10 elementary
schools and we donate approxi-
mately 800 books to the schools.
The Rotarians pass out the dic-
tionaries and teach the students
how to use it. It also teaches them
theres more than computers,
said Wardle.
The main objective of Rotary is
service in the community, in the
workplace, and throughout the
world according to the Medford-
Vincentown Rotarys website. To
learn more about the rotary and
their community-wide projects,

Do you want to win $500? Grab
your bike and a few good friends
for a race around beautiful Med-
ford Lakes!
Amazing Pace will be held Sat-
urday, Sept. 8 from 2 p.m. until 4
p.m. at Vaughan Hall located at 79
Tecumseh Rail.
The Amazing Pace is a race
consisting of more than eight dif-
ferent tasks at different locations
around Medford Lakes. Some
tasks are physical, some creative,
some cerebral, and some will be
won on dumb luck, so make sure
you have a well-rounded team!
Your team will need to bike from
task to task so everyone must
have a bike, and all participants
must be at least 21 years of age.
There will be a total of 20
teams competing. Each task will
be graded by a pre-determined
point system. Teams will also be
awarded points according to their
order of finishing the race.
The cost of entry is $40 per par-
ticipant or $160 per team. This
also includes an after-party at PJ
Whelihans in Medford Lakes
where the winners will be an-
nounced. The party includes a
two drink tickets and appetizers.
Tickets for the party only, for
someone who is not participating
in the race, will be $15.
This is a great fundraising ef-
fort for the Medford Lakes
Womens Club. The organization
raises funds that go directly back
into the Medford Lakes communi-
ty.
Early registration bonus: If
your team has their registration
forms and money in by midnight
on Aug. 23, the team will get an
early bird clue!
The team with the highest cu-
mulative points will win first
place, team will be awarded $500.
There will also be prizes for sec-
ond and third place teams, and
some recognition for teams that
make a lasting impression.
We are also in need of sponsors
for the teams. If you have a busi-
ness, it's a great way to get expo-
sure. Your company name will be
on the t-shirts of one of the
teams. Cost of sponsorship is
$100.
For registration forms and
sponsorship information, contact
Kristin
Burke Scaffidi at kburke@hlm-
