Team Speed maintains focus on wins
By KRISTINA SCALA
and KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Voorhees Sun
It takes dedication, hard work
and determination to be an ath-
lete. Athleticism is not some-
thing that happens over night,
but takes talent and hard work to
show natural ability in a sport.
Amongst 11 other players from
the area, Matt Klinewski and
Cherry Hills Team Speed re-
turned from the Nike World
Championship tournament at the
Mirage Cason in Las Vegas.
The team walked away from
the championship with 13 wins
and five losses, taking the third
spot out of 164 teams in its age
group.
During the World Champi-
onship, the team managed to stay
focused on the court and played
more games then the average
team.
When you watch them play a
lot of teams, [our opponents]
might be better than us and might
have more athletic ability, but as
the game goes on to the third and
fourth quarter, [Team Speed does-
nt] get tired, head coach Robert
DePersia said.
Team Speed is a 16-U travel bas-
ketball team with players from
the South Jersey area. The team
ended their season with 45 wins
and 10 losses, winning nine tour-

nament championship games.
Team Speed added the successful
Las Vegas trip to its accomplish-
ments.
Klinewski, the 69 forward
and a junior at Eastern High
School, has a ranking of his own.
He may sit at the twenty-second
spot in the NJ Hoops top 100 for
Juniors, but is ranked second
from all players in the South Jer-
sey area.
DePersia mentioned that hav-
ing a team that is recognized for
its ability against national teams
is incredible.
Team Speed represents Cherry
Hill but the players are from dif-
ferent areas within South Jersey.
Surrounded by major metro-
politan teams, Team Speed man-
aged to squeeze into the third
seat, said DePersia.
DePersia mentioned how pecu-
liar it was to have major metro-
politan teams.
They are just that good, De-
Persia said.
This type of skill doesnt hap-
pen over night, said DePersia.
DePersia mentioned that most
of the players on the team are
four sport stars in their town. He
said the Klinewski used to figure
skate when he was younger and
he was a champion figure skater.
The other sports that the boys
played help with the players bas-
ketball ability, but DePersia does-
nt base the players abilities in
other sports to basketball. Train-
ing sessions run on and off-sea-
son and the boys are always prac-
ticing basketball, said DePersia.
Each training session com-
bines various training modules,
to help an all-around develop-
ment, but the major focus is on
the speed and agility training.
The training schedule for these
young athletes consists of inten-
sive speed and agility training,
core training, weight training
and stamina improvement. Ac-
cording to DePersia, core training
takes place three days out of the
week, one hour and 15 minutes
per day.
From November to March, the
guys practice for Team Speeds
around the schools schedule
while the other eight months are
used for strictly Team Speed prac-
tices, said DePersia.
DePersia stressed the academic
importance for the team. The pro-
gram is not there to create a bas-
ketball player; each player needs
to be a well-rounded individual,
said DePersia.
Everybody in our program
takes honors classes, DePersia
said. Everyone of them is col-
lege admitable.
Combining academic scores
with their talent on the courts
helps with the college applica-
tions.
Team Speeds assistant coach
and academic advisor, Dr. Earl
Pearsall, makes sure that the boys
are keeping up with their aca-

Eastern alumni are being wel-
comed back to see old friends and
reconnect with the school and
community while raising money
for Alexs Lemonade Stand Foun-
dation.
September is the start of a new
school year and also National
Childhood Cancers Awareness
Month. It is a time when children
and teenagers may feel excited or
anxious about what teachers they
will have or what friends will be
in their class. Unfortunately, for
pediatric cancer patients, Sep-
tember may mark a time of con-
tinued treatments, hospital stays
and doctor appointments.
The Eastern High School Alum-
ni Association wants to help more
children and teenagers move away
from cancer and get to their high
school graduations and reunions.
In that spirit, the Association is
calling on all Eastern alumni to
come back to the school for a
unique family-friendly reunion
where they can relive their glory
days of high school. On Sunday,
Sept. 16 at 9 a.m., the Glory Days
5K will take place at Eastern with
all proceeds benefitting Alexs
Lemonade Stand Foundation.
Eastern alumni, Ali Gorman of
Action News and Adam Taliafer-
ro, inspirational former Penn
State football player, will be on
hand to give opening remarks at
the run.The run starts and ends
with a lap around the Eastern
track. The event is open to every-
one. Members of the community
are welcome to participate in the
run and can make it a reunion of
their own with friends and family
looking to come together to help
fight pediatric cancer.

The Voorhees Sun
During the regularly scheduled
Voorhees Township Committee
meeting on Monday, Aug. 13, the
removal of the approximately 100
Canadian geese from the Echelon
Mall Lake was discussed.
Although the topic was not
presently on the agenda, Presi-
dent of the Animal Rights Ac-
tivists of New Jersey and
Voorhees resident David Sauder,
stood up before the committee
and mentioned his concern about
the township not taking action re-
garding the removal.
I hope that Voorhees can ask
Echelon to manage the geese hu-
manly, Saunders said.
Saunders presented the com-
mittee with a packet of alterna-
tive methods to reduce the popu-
lation of Canadian geese at the
Echelon Mall facilities in a hu-
mane matter.
Along with the packet, Saun-
ders gave a brief statement and
had a typed letter on him, ex-
plaining his concerns about the
Echelon Common Facilities Asso-
ciations (ECFAs) actions to re-
move the geese.
Sauder recommended the pos-
sible cost effective and humane
alternatives to managing the
geese on the property.
Such alternatives like the Na-
ture-sweep a towable device that
uses a nylon brush system to pick
up debris without damaging the
grass.
Considering the steps in re-
moving the geese was regulated

One of the most gratifying aspects of
being the Mayor of Voorhees Township is
having the opportunity to witness and be
part of so many wonderful causes. The
Suarez Family of Voorhees has organized
Striking Out Kids Cancer and is hosting
a Community Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Connolly Park. The
event will feature a variety of crafters, ven-
dors, local businesses and organizations
joining together to raise awareness and
funds during Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month.
Every year, thousands of children, teens
and young adults fight pediatric cancer.
These young people are at war for their
lives. This event is being held in tribute to
those courageous warriors battling pedi-
atric cancer and in memory of those who
have lost their fight. Proceeds of the event
will benefit The Cancer Center at The Chil-
drens Hospital of Philadelphia.
Cancer remains the leading cause of
death by disease
for children in the
United States
under the age of 15.
While the five-year
survival rate for
young patients has
risen to 80 percent
in the past half
century, survivors
frequently struggle
with life-long chal-
lenges and compli-
cations that result
from their intense
treatment.

was cut short, the fund honors Chads
memory by helping needy children partici-

MAYORS MESSAGE
I
f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.

on campus
protection, management and
wise use of New Jersey's fish and
wildlife resources and a govern-
ment regulated organization the
Voorhees Township Committee is
unable to interfere with those spe-
cific procedures.
Voorhees Township Solicitor
Howard Long advised the mem-
bers to not take action on this
matter due to the fact that it
would go against State and Feder-
al regulations under the NJDFW
and New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection.
Mayor Michael Mignogna
agreed with Long; however,
Mignogna and Long agreed that
the committee will do its best to
spread the word about the pos-
sible alternatives to removing
geese and the issue that arose
with the removal of geese from
Echelon Mall Lake.
Voorhees Township Adminis-
trator Larry Spellman mentioned
that the town couldnt take action
since the Echelon Common Facil-
ities Association gathered the
necessary permits to remove the
geese. MAMCO property manage-
ment is the managing agency for
the ECFA who applied for the
depredation permit from the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Services Mi-
gratory Birds division.
Spellman said that the geese
are protected and the township
cant challenge the ECFA for tak-
ing that type of action.
Spellman is working on a cover
letter to give to Alan Tate, manag-
er for MAMCO and caretaker
of the Echelon common proper-
ties.
I hope that the Voorhees town-
ship will give that manual to
other business in Voorhees and in
the Echelon Mall, said Sauder.
The more people that know
about these non-lethal ways are
better. We do have to reduce popu-
lation, but I recommend reducing
it humanely.
Also at the meeting:
The committee approved the
appointment of Jason Cramer to
the Voorhees police department.
Cramer was formally employed
at the Rowan University police
department.
The committee approved three
grants during the meeting. An
ACME grant for $5000 will be
used for improvements at the
Sheppard Road basketball courts.
The Community Development
Block Grant (CDBG) a grant for
senior citizens that will be used to
offset costs for the senior bus and
senior coordinator, said Spell-
man was unanimously ap-
proved.
They also approved to continue
the Eastern High School Cops in
Schools program federal grant
program that offers law enforce-
ment agencies to patrol and po-
lice around schools.
The third grant approval was
the Clean Communities Grant for
$47,260. According to Spellman,
this grant will be used for litter
collection and other trash collec-
tions.
The committee also discussed
the Dutch Town Road Pump sta-
tion. By this time next year, the
township is hoping to have full
ownership of the land and the
pump station.
Spellman also wanted to make
sure that the residents of
Voorhees know that the commit-
tee approved the resolution to ex-
tend the grace period for taxes.
Third quarter taxes are due Mon-
day, Aug. 27, at the close of busi-
nesses.
