Seven prosecutors from the

and Security Conference at the
TD Bank Arts Center in the
Washington Township High
School, Wednesday, Aug. 15.
The topics on the agenda main-
ly focused on the advances in
technology and how it can nega-
tively affect not only children, but
also adults in a public setting.
Law enforcement and teachers
were there at the seminar to gath-
er information to bring back to
their workplace.
Our schools are one of the
most important facilities in our
communities, said Gloucester
County Prosecutor Sean Dalton.
All of these issues are important
to all of us.

I
f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.
in our opinion
Out of the basement?
After years of declining prices, housing market looks to be headed up
Housing prices are up
Homeowners have been waiting for five
years or more for the news that was
released late last month: Housing
prices are inching up. Maybe the worst
of the housing storm has passed.
According to Camden County Prosecu-
tor Warren Faulk, cyber bullying doesnt
just affect children, it affects public offi-
cials.
[The seminar] is an opportunity for law
enforcement and educators to interact and
discuss the issues they have in common,
Faulk said.
Sexual predators, invasion of privacy
and gang activity are the common threats
both law enforcement and educators have
in common and the conference addressed
all areas.
Sgt. Steven LaPorta, from the Gloucester
County prosecutors office, gave his pres-
entation on invasion of privacy in the
classroom.
LaPorta spent 12 years in the prosecu-
tors office and addressed the audience by
comparing todays technology with the
pasts.
There is no expectation of privacy when
you are in a public setting, LaPorta said.
Whether you are law enforcement or a
teacher, the are looking to target you.
LaPorta shared an instance of children
antagonizing teachers while another child
records it. He advised all to make neces-
sary judgments before you can take control
of the situation.
LaPorta stressed that you never know
when you are being recorded. As he
walked over to the podium, he picked up
his phone and showed the audience that he
was recording his speech the entire time.
Its just your best bet to assume that
you are always being recorded, said La-
Porta.
Jim Janco, director of Security and Pri-
vacy Comcast, talked about Internet safety.
The current generation has a different
perception of technology and the Internet,
that generation does not know a time with-
out it, Janco said.
Since most teens are constantly connect-
ed to the Internet, they trust the informa-
tion they receive from it. Janco said that 95
percent of all teens are online and 86 per-
cent received advice from their parents.
Avoiding technological advances is im-
possible.
Its important that we understand what
these social network sites are about,
Janco said.
Gloucester and Salem County Superin-
tendent Robert Bumpus knows both the
law enforcement world as well as spending
30 years as a teacher. He mentioned how
privacy invasion is happening in the class-
room and the more people know about the
laws, recognizing privacy invasion in-
stances and the different ways to take ac-
tion, the better.
As public servants, its our responsibili-
ty to be on top of things on a daily basis,
said Bumpus. We are responsible for pre-
cious souls.

Academy Hall will feature an art
gallery. Mainstage plans to put
the gallery to good use by hosting
local artists exhibits.
The historic township-owned
building first operated as a
school, the Academy and Female
Collegiate Institute, in the 1850s.
Under Mainstages management,
it will once again become a center
for learning. The township is
working on a restoration of the
facility, which will enable it to
host most of Mainstages classes.
Mainstage adds so much to
the fiber of Gloucester Township
with its performing arts pro-
grams for youth and adults. Its
fitting that they have a presence
right in the center of town along
the Black Horse Pike, Gloucester
Township Mayor David Mayer
said. They are an integral part of
revitalizing downtown Black-
wood.
These revitalization efforts
have already begun with the
Blackwood Farmers Market held
Saturday mornings in the sum-
mer, the Blackwood Pumpkin Fes-
tival, Holiday Parade, and new
business in the area.
Mainstage Center for the Arts
will hold an open house for its
studio classes on Monday, Sept.10
at 6:30 p.m. in Academy Hall, 27
South Black Horse Pike, Black-
wood.
For more information about
Mainstage Center for the Arts,
please visit www.mainstage.org
or call (856) 227-3091.
Mainstage Center for the Arts,
the parent program for Summer
Stage, is a 501 (3) non-profit or-
ganization committed to provid-
ing a creative, vibrant, and nur-
turing environment for youth and
adults.
This program is made possible
in part by funds from the New
Jersey State Council on the
Arts/Department of State, a Part-
ner Agency of the National En-
dowment for the Arts and by
funds from the National Endow-
ment for the Arts. This program
is also made possible in part by
funds from the New Jersey Cul-
tural Trust.
Mainstage Center for the Arts,
located at Camden County Col-
lege in Blackwood, is committed
to making the arts experience en-
joyable for all its patrons. In an ef-
fort to make the shows, concerts,
events, workshops, classes, and
offices accessible to as many as
possible, Mainstage offers many
services for patrons requiring as-
sistance. For anyone in need of
assistance, please notify the office
at (856) 227-3091 at the time of pur-
chasing tickets, or at least five
days prior to the event you are at-
tending.
