Trash agreement
Haddonfield to save through

Cupcake shop featured on Food Network

The Haddonfield Sun
Ready, set, bake.
Theresa Hrivnak and Joseph
Halloran, owners of Indulgence
Cupcakery on Haddy Lane be-
hind the Hadrosaurus statue in
downtown Haddonfield recently
received airtime on the Food Net-
works weekly show, Cupcake
Wars.
On Sunday, Aug. 5, the duo and
the local community crowded
around televisions at P.J. Wheli-
hans Pub and Restaurant in
neighboring Westmont to watch
the competition and lend their
support.
The show was filmed in Los
Angeles in February, and the cup-
cake masters were not allowed to
share that they had been invited
onto the show until July.
They did not speak to the possi-
bility of being on the show, but
customers asked. And asked. And
asked.
When Hrivnak sent in her ap-
plication on a Tuesday, the pro-
gram called the same night re-
questing a video submission
within three days time.
We got all of our friends to-
gether and put the video togeth-
er, she said. Within a week and
a half, we had about 4,000 hits on
our video on YouTube.
Soon thereafter, they received
their show invite.
Luck was in our corner, she
expressed. It was a really fast
process for us.
The business, which has had a
storefront for two years this
month, has seen a spike in traffic
since the show aired.
Hrivnak and Halloran made it
to the third round and ended the
show as runners up.
Its been crazy, said Hrivnak
of the business boost. I cant be-
lieve it.
It feels like we did win, she
added, between all of the feed-
back and foot traffic.
Its been wonderful.
Their time spent in California
was extremely stressful, the pair
explained.
As soon as we landed, work
began, said Halloran. It was
still fun.
Any free time they had was
spent sleeping, he said.
Since the filming, they were
anxious to see how the show
would be edited.
I dont remember half of the
things that we did, Halloran ad-
mitted.
For the first round, they were
given 30 minutes to bake.
I dont remember 28 of those
minutes, he laughed. It was a
blur.
Hrivnak added that it was the
fastest 30 minutes of her life.
It flies by, she said.
Halloran was known to spout

First Friday in Haddonfield
events now have another activity
for restless feet.
Mark Simmons and Mike Car-
wile are giving back to their com-
munity with free tours in con-
junction with First Friday festivi-
ties.
The 2007 Haddonfield Memori-
al High School graduates recently
formed Free and Friendly
Tours, walking tours that are
given on a tip basis.
The tours are hosted daily in
Philadelphia.
Weve been doing this since
May 1, said Carwile. This is our
first First Friday. We founded this
tour company in Philadelphia but
we are looking to get our name
out there to people in the area.
The August tour, dubbed The
Shops and Stories of Haddon-
field, was put together speedily,
he explained, with planning be-
ginning a couple of weeks prior
to the event.
For more details, contact Mark
Simmons and Mike Carwile at
(877) 558-9671 or freeandfriend-
lytours@gmail.com. The duo
hosts regularly scheduled tours of
Philadelphia in addition to Had-

they will begin offering A Walk

Project Haddonfield Votes was started this summer by
Matthew Nussbaum, Haddonfield Memorial High School gradu-
ate and sophomore at Yale University. They registered about
20 voters during the annual Sidewalk Sale, gave out voters
guides and answered questions about the upcoming elections.
Former HMHS running teammate Ben Potts, who now attends
Cornell, also came and staffed the booth. Pictured are Nuss-
baum and Meghan Malloy registering Holly Bischof.

I
f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.
in our opinion
Out of the basement?
After years of declining prices, housing market looks to be headed up
Housing prices are up
Homeowners have been waiting for five
years or more for the news that was
released late last month: Housing
prices are inching up. Maybe the worst
of the housing storm has passed.
Colombi.
The agreement, which provides for a $59
per ton rate, will begin next month and af-
fect 224,000 homes in the county.
Municipalities and counties working
together to bring down costs is a benefit to
all towns operating under a 2 percent cap,
Bill Dressel, executive director of the New
Jersey League of Municipalities said in a
statement. Innovative thinking and
shared services will allow mayors more
flexibility with their finances and provide
our executives with the ability to produce
lower prices for the taxpayers.
The municipalities within the agree-
ment represent more than 187,000 tons of
trash each year, said Freeholder Jeffrey
Nash.
The bids that came in for the agreement,
he added, were extremely favorable.
Its a remarkable savings, he said.
The trash is incinerated in the city of
Camden.
Municipalities no longer are held to a
state imposed trash flow restriction and
thus were able to go out to bid.
Mayor Chuck Cahn of Cherry Hill,
Mayor Dave Mayer of Gloucester Town-
ship and Mayor John Ward of Audubon
were also present to explain how the agree-
ment will help the communities.
It is anticipated that Cherry Hill resi-
dents will save $190,000 over three years in
tonnage rates, said Mayor Cahn, of the
$1,311,900 in total that will be saved in mu-
nicipalities throughout the county.
Were working hard to get our tonnage
down, he said, pointing out that the town-
ship was originally looking at a cost of $72
per ton.
In the next two years, Mayor Mayer said,
Gloucester Township will be paying less
for trash disposal than they did in the prior
two years.
Shared services to Mayor Ward are a no
brainer.
Its the future of local government, he
said. Were looking forward to it.
Winslow Township went out to bid sepa-
rately, officials said, due to proceedings on
their end.
In the future, Camden County munici-
palities who are not involved in the origi-
nal agreement will be able to join.
According to a county release, the
process of organizing the cooperative bid
package began in February. The govern-
ments involved were placed into the bid to
drive down the price with the ultimate goal
being to provide relief to budgetary con-
straints.
This partnership reflects the Freehold-
er Boards commitment to cost cutting and
fiscal responsibility, said Nash in a state-
ment. By joining in this cooperative bid
package, each participant will save a great
deal in disposal fees.

I think it went great, Carwile
said.
The borough is a good fit for a
walking tour, he explained, be-
tween the influx of people and the
depth of history.
Beginning in Kings Court at 7
p.m., the pair, garbed in bright
blue shirts and armed with a sign
and brochures, promoted them-
selves with smiles and the occa-
sional jig.
Within a few minutes, a group
had formed and the walking
began.
Meandering down Kings High-
way, all the while sharing stories
of times past, including the com-
ing of the railroad, the impact of
the Quakers and some Revolu-

one-liners throughout the taping.
During the show, they said,
during an embattled period, he
turned to Hrivnak and simply
said, Not my fault.
On his Facebook page, every-
one is quoting, Not my fault,
she said.
The goal of the show was to
create unique cupcakes in a cre-
ative presentation with provided
ingredients for the chance to win
$10,000.
I would never put half those
ingredients together to sell here,
she said, citing that many people
generally do not have adventur-
ous palettes.
While the pair didnt win the
competition, they were also
spared from harsh comments
from the judges.
There was legitimately not a
bad comment for us at all, ex-
plained Hrivnak, past a remark
about the flavor not popping
enough.
While sharing their story, cus-
tomers shuffled in and out of the
shop snatching up miniature cup-
cakes, many commenting that
they should have won the compe-
tition.
An edited version of the show
is to be posted on the shops web-
site soon.

first-grade student. A $750 schol-
arship is awarded to each student
for caring for others before them-
selves and who go out of their
way to help others.
The scholarship fund was es-
tablished from donations made in
memory of Elaine M. Celenza,
who passed away at the age of 48
on Feb. 24 after a long fight with
cancer. Elaine lived life to the
fullest and fought hard against
the cancer to be here as long as
she could. She involved her life in
her family and community of
Haddonfield and the teens and
kids surrounding her. Elaine was
thankful for all of you who have
helped her and her family in any
way. Elaine was a secretary at
Christ the King Regional School
and an active member of Christ
the King Parish.
Educating pre-kindergarten to
eighth-grade students, Christ the
King Regional School is a
Catholic learning community
with a long standing tradition of
rigorous academic standards and
spiritually relevant teachings.
Middle school students at CKRS
would experience readers and
writers workshops, a full science
laboratory with LED micro-
scopes, and the Rosetta Stone
Classroom language program.
Both in the classroom and outside
of school, students in all grades
have an instinctive desire to serve
God and others. Students donate
their time and talents to give back
to the community through pro-
grams like Kids Alley and non-
profit groups like Babes Kids.
Families interested in attend-
ing Christ the King should con-
tact the schools advancement di-
rector at (856) 429-2084 or via

known historical figures of the
borough. She made a life for her-
self here.
As the tour came to a close
with the sky darkening above,
Carwile suggested tour-goers
head across the street to A Taste
of Olive.
Theyre very serious about
their taste of food, he explained.
Carwile and Simmons, who
met while in high school, part-
nered after Simmons stint in Bu-
dapest, Hungary.
I traveled around quite a bit,
he said of his time after gradua-
tion, with countries listed on
their brochure including Estonia,
Hungary, Turkey and Germany. I
found a lot of companies that
were interesting.
While working in a hostel, he
overheard the opinions of
tourists and how much they en-
joyed having friendly, knowledge-
able and local guides.
I thought, well, thats a really
neat concept, he said.
He spoke with Carwile, who
had decided that academic re-
search at his perch at the Univer-
sity of Chicago wasnt for him,
and their adventure began.
The duo, who like learning the
stories behind objects rather than
just walking by, said they hope for
a larger crowd in September.
To learn the history of Had-
donfield, attend the tour at the
