RACE FOR CITY HALL: Brisbane City Council elections, April 28

SNAPSHOT

FRUSTRATED inner-city residents are calling on Council to increase the number of permit-exempted car parks in Teneriffe and Newstead, claiming scarce on-street parking is bringing hip-pocket pain to flatmates. Complex manager Colleen Hayler says her 39-unit block, The Bond Store, on Newstead Tce at Newstead has up to three bedrooms per apartment but there is only one undercover car space allocated for each. Extra tenants have to scramble for only eight resident-exempted street parks or pay up to $8 a day. Ms Hayler says the parking pinch worsened after Brisbane City Council rolled out meters in 2009. There was no consultation at all, she says. I called the council on the Tuesday and they said it was only a proposal but then they started digging holes in the ground by the Friday. But a Brisbane City Council spokeswoman rejected the claims, saying it under-

Their claims are backed by Labor candidate Philip Anthony, who says residentexempted parking has to be extended but added it would need to be implemented in consultation with the community. But sitting Councillor David McLachlan (Hamilton Ward) accused the ALP of making up lies and generating fear and concern about parking in the Bowen Hills, Teneriffe and Newstead area. Brisbane City Council says residents are allowed to apply for one permit per vehicle registered and a further two visitor permits.

We know that there are all sorts of mega-plan talks but for the immediate there is a need to do some small retrofitting now.

CYCLISTS have called on Brisbane City Council to widen an existing footpath along Kingsford Smith Drive and address safety concerns. The first stage of the upgrade to the narrow corridor was completed at the end of last year but further upgrades will require state and federal funding and many commuters fear it could be years before widening is

undertaken to ease congestion along the arterial. About 65,000 vehicles use the road each day which has little or no shoulder making it hostile for cyclists in Brisbane. An Ascot resident, who did not want to be named, said the narrow footpath was a dangerous alternative. The footpath is right beside the road and you can actually fall into traffic quite easily. Theres not even a fence, he said.

The cyclist said sections of the path could be widened but Councillor David McLachlan (Hamilton) said without major work the council was constrained by the geography. If the objective of the longer-term project is to provide the same infrastructure, it doesnt make a whole lot of sense to put in interim infrastructure that would in the not-too-distant future be pulled out again, he said. But Bicycle Queensland

general manager Ben Wilson said widening even the narrowest 10 per cent would be a bonus. We know that there are all sorts of mega-plan talks but for the immediate we actually say that there is a need to do some small retro-fitting now, he said. Labor candidate (Hamilton) Philip Anthony supported any initiatives that would get people into active transport. If it can be done it should be done, he said.

A QUT road safety researcher has found motorcyclists are more than three times as likely to die in accidents. It also found moped and scooter riders crashed more frequently.
