THE Deception Bay Bombers are preparing to celebrate the life of Anthony Yabba Hopkins on Saturday with a huge afternoon at the Deception Bay Sports Ground. The Bombers and the Deception Bay community were left in shock at the weekend when Hopkins, a
masters rugby league player and devoted father, died on the field after suffering heart failure. Masters team-mate and good friend Steven Seagrott said Yabba was a popular figure not only at the Deception Bay Bombers but in Masters Rugby League. He never had a bad word about anyone and you never saw him without a smile on his face, he said.
Seagrott said Hopkins picked up his nickname of Y a b b a fo r r en o w n ed ability to talk on the field. You always knew he had your back because he was there yabbering in your ear, Seagrott said. All South-East Queensland Masters Rugby League Association fixtures will be rescheduled to the Deception Bay Sports Ground for Saturday, while the Bombers
Womens, Open 2 and Masters sides will also take to the field in tribute to Hopkins. The Bombers will hold a raffle on the day to raise money to help support Hopkins wife and children. Events will begin at the Deception Bay Sports Ground, 100 Maine Tce, Deception Bay, from 1.30pm.
