Trad believes development key for area

ALP candidate for South Brisbane Jackie Trad said the redevelopment of Davies Park was one Trad of the biggest issues raised by voters during her door knock of the electorate. The redevelopment of that precinct would add so much to the amenity of the area, but also give Souths (rugby league) a boost. Ms Trad is favourite to win Saturdays by-election, according to a ReachTEL poll of 300 voters. According to the poll, Ms Trad had support from 43.9 per cent of the electorate, with Clem Grehan (LNP) attracting 34.6 per cent and the Greens Jo Bragg 19 per cent.

GABBA ward Cr Helen Abrahams (ALP) has called for upgrades to lighting along the base of the Kangaroo Point cliffs, claiming the unlit area was a hazard. She said before the 2011 floods the area was safe, but now it was too dark for night-time users to safely navigate the path. The bike path is without lighting and I am seriously concerned for the safety of cyclists and other park users, Cr Abrahams said. The pedestrian pathway has lighting, but this is not providing any light on to the picnic shelter or barbecues in the park. Bicycle Queensland man-

ager Ben Wilson said cyclists had told him the area was a little unsafe after dark, but mostly well lit. Theres always a safety concern on any bike path after the floods, Mr Wilson said. (But) theres a lot more light now than there was after the floods . . . were pretty patient. LNP candidate (Gabba ward) Francis Quinlivan said the Brisbane City Council planned to install 62 new lights by June. Lord Mayor Graham Quirks council team decided to install additional lighting, which will ensure a noticeably brighter cliff face . . . greater flood resilience and the ability to change colour for special events.

Vote for local manufacturing

AUSTRALIAN Party candidate for South Brisbane Rob Wardrop wants South Brisbane electorate voters to send a message to the LNP and Labor about not selling out to foreign corporations. Mr Wardrop, who owns a local manufacturing and construction business, said it was difficult for many manufacturers a plight compounded by Government policy, which supports foreign business at the expense of our own. The LNP have committed to follow through with the final sale of QR National and we know theyll follow with the sale of whats left of our state-owned power stations, which will increase electricity prices, Mr Wardrop said. The same will be true for water infrastructure and other utilities.

Preferences sent to Johnston

NICOLE Johnston (Tennyson) has been given a preference boost by Labor and the Greens ahead of Saturdays election. Both parties have confirmed they will direct preferences to her. Cr Johnston was hoping her community record would help get her over the line against Matt Brodie (LNP). I think Tennyson ward residents are very clear about where I stand and my level of support for the community, she said.
