Wynnum election battle of big two

LABORS Peter Cumming will go into battle to keep his place in the Wynnum Manly Ward during Saturdays local election. LNP candidate Deirdre Thomson will go head-tohead with Cr Cumming for the safe Labor seat with a margin of 9.1 per cent. Cr Cumming has promised to throw his support behind Labors $150 million upgrade to ease traffic congestion on Wynnum Rd. Ms Thomson said she and Team Quirk will deliver flashing speed signs worth $12,500 for local roads to limit speeding. Both candidates identified the Wynnum Central State School as a key to the development of the Wynnum CBD. Cr Cumming said he wanted six things for the site. A state-of-the-art library, a community centre, a CBD park, an eight-storey block of residential units, a cinema complex and land for a new Meals on Wheels building, he said. Ms Thomson is pushing for a community hub. I would push for provision of toilets at the site, work on creating a festivals and events program and create a community hub to have activities which would engage and encourage visitors to the area, she said. Independent Barry Myatt wants a trades training college, a multi-level carpark and a cinema complex. Also in contention is Greens candidate Matthew Brown. Candidates Paul Gleeson, Brett Thompson and Alan Roche are fighting for Capalabas Division 9 of Redland City Council.

COUNCILLOR for Doboy John Campbell is the longest standing Labor member of the Brisbane City Council but his title could be under threat this Saturday. The LNPs Ryan Murphy, 23, is fresh on the scene and is a chance to take the marginal ward with just 1 per cent in it. Cr Campbell said he would work hard with the State Government to implement Campbell Newmans 2004 promise as Lord Mayor to install the much needed Lindum overpass.

ONE of Queenslands most prominent political commentators says Labor face a struggle to retain marginal wards such as Doboy at this weeks council election. Barely a month after the LNPs landslide state

10 wards they currently hold. There will be a swing against Labor in the wards and in the mayoral race, he said. If we see the same swing (as in the state election), Labor wont have any wards left. Even if they retain five wards, I think they will be happy with that.
Mr Murphy said as a former Iona College student the Lindum overpass was his top priority.

Our commitment to fund 50 per cent of the upgrade remains, he said. He also said that if elected the traffic congestion on Wynnum Rd would be another priority. Cr Adrian Schrinner is aiming to keep Chandler a safe LNP seat. With a margin of 21.2 per cent Cr Schrinner is running against Labors Liz Starr. He said he would continue to lobby the Federal Government for funding of the Rickertt Rd bottleneck. Ms Starr said she would work to ensure local roads in the area received the attention they needed.
