Assignment Decorate your writing folder (which will be presented and serve as your introduction to me and your peers) according to the following guidelines: o At least 5 pictures on the front that illustrate who you are o At least 5 pictures on back that illustrate your future goals/plans o At least 5 pictures inside that illustrate your secret self Bring in all required materials as delineated on the class syllabus Get class syllabus signed!! Complete your first essay on the topic you chose in class, having to do with either an individuals responsibility to society, the affect of power on the individual, etc. o Type your draft according to my type guidelines. Check your syllabus if you forgot! Read the short story Gaston o Remember, you should mark-up-the-text as you read! o Complete a CHARACTERIZATION journal entry on one of the three characters of the story (do not choose Gaston!) o Note that this kind of entry is going to be different than a typical DJ entry (see class notes) The Last Leafcomplete the reading o Complete a brief character analysis (think characterization DJ), using evidence/details from the story, for EACH of the following characters: Sue, Johnsy, the doctor, and Mr. Behrman. You should have at least 2 items per character. This should be in 2-column formatsee class example Be prepared for class discussion on the characters! Independent Reading: Read at least 30 minutes from your chosen independent reading book and complete a characterization journal entry (4 trait minimum) on the main character of your chosen book. o Choose adequate sections to quoteones that reveal character traits o Provide commentary for each of the selected quotes o Finally, explain how it is that the author characterizes the main character of your book. Write about your perceptions regarding Childhood vs. Adulthood. You may wish to define each stage of life, explain the differences

between the two (i.e.: what is gained? Lost?, etc). I am interested in knowing your views regarding coming of age. Be as detailed/explicit as possible to ensure my understanding of your views. o At least 1 page typed, following type requirements.
