The 25th annual BC Senior Games were held in Burnaby this past weekend thursday-Sunday, with approximately 3,500 participants from all over the province. Five local women represented Merritt: Laurel Robertson & Laura Cornies in duplicate bridge, and Maxine Olstad, Shirley Vezina & June Chaba in crib. While only June brought home a medal bronze they all had a heck of a good time! (Last year, June & Laura played crib & brought home the gold!) The BC Seniors Games is an annual, multi-sport event hosted by a different community each year. Participants need only be 55+, and there are all sorts of games for the mind & body in which to participate: archery, badminton, bocce, bridge, carpet bowling, cribbage, cycling, darts, dragon boat racing, five pin bowling, floor curling, golf, horseshoes, ice curling, ice hockey, lawn bowling, one-act plays, pickleball, slo-pitch, snooker, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track & field, and whist. And with next years games being hosted just down the road in Kamloops, the local contingent is hoping many more Merrittonians will be able to participate. The Billet Family Program plays a major role in the team's success both on and off the ice.
