0 Dr. Philip Waddell 214 Learning Services Building (520) 621-7418 waddell@email.arizona.edu Office Hours: MoTh 11-12 (and by appt.) COURSE TAs: James Duffy Chantel Osborne Alvaro Pires Jessica Wiles REQUIRED TEXTS: Jo-Ann Shelton, As the Romans Did: A Sourcebook in Roman Social History (Oxford, 1998) ISBN: 978-0195089745 John Stambaugh, The Ancient Roman City (Johns Hopkins, 1988) ISBN: 978-0801836923 COURSE DESCRIPTION: From antiquity to the present, Rome, especially ancient Rome, has always held a special fascination. This course addresses many questions about what life was like in ancient Rome, and in the Empire in general, such as: where did Romans live? what did they eat? how did they worship? where did they work? how did they spend their leisure time? how did they govern themselves? how did they design cities? what did ancient Rome look like? In order to answer these questions, we will be investigating ancient texts and inscriptions, as well as Romes physical remains. In this class we will be using textual criticism, archaeology, epigraphy, and topography to better understand the Romans and, ultimately, ourselves. COURSE POLICIES: There will be no make-up exams/quizzes unless as the result of an excused absence or the instructor has been contacted BEFORE the exam/quiz concerning alternate arrangements. The recording of lectures is strictly prohibited. Students are responsible for completing the assigned readings and homework listed on the schedule BEFORE that days lecture. GRADING: Letter grades for the course are assigned as follows: A (100-90%), B (89-80%), C (79-70%), D (69-60%), E (below 60%). They will be based on the following breakdown: 3 examinations (at 33% each) duffyj08@email.arizona.edu osbornec@email.arizona.edu aeopires@email.arizona.edu jswiles@email.arizona.edu
