1-0, 0-0 Big 12 (home: 1-0, away: 0-0) Tulsa (FSN) at Iowa (BTN) Western Illinois (CYtv) Texas Tech*

Iowa State heads for Iowa City to face intrastate rival Iowa for the 60th time. The Cyclones beat Tulsa 38-23 Saturday in Ames. Iowa beat Northern Illinois, 18-17 at Soldier Field in Chicago Saturday. Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads has a 19-20 record early in his fourth season at ISU. He is the first coach in Cyclone history to take his team to a pair of postseason bowls in his first three seasons as Iowa States head coach. Iowa State set an all-time attendance record last season of 53,647 fans per game. A schoolrecord opening day crowd of 54,931 saw Iowa State beat Tulsa. The Cyclones have sold a new record of 39,777 season tickets as of Aug. 31. All six Iowa State home games drew more than 50,000 fans last season, a school first. The No. 1 reason for the record turnout? Iowa State fans love head coach Paul Rhoads who was born 10 minutes from Jack Trice Stadium, went to high school 20 minutes from the stadium and previously served as a Cyclone assistant coach from 1995-1999. This Iowan is truly one of them. Iowa State QB Steele Jantz threw for a career-high 281 yards and RB Shontrelle Johnson rushed for a career-high 120 yards as Iowa State downed Tulsa 38-23 Saturday in Jack Trice Stadium. Jantz tossed two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Cyclones racked up 441 yards against a team that had won eight games in 2011. Jake Knott led Iowa State with 11 tackles and forced a Tulsa fumble, the ninth such play of his career. His fellow linebackers Deon Broomfield and A.J. Klein had seven tackles. Broomfield had a 51-yard interception return that led to the final score of the game. Iowa States defense is anchored by linebackers A.J. Klein and Jake Knott. Big 12 coaches voted linebacker Klein as the 2011 conferences co-defensive player of the year. Klein reached double figures in tackles in four of the last six games and finished the season with 116 tackles. His wingman Knott earned first-team all-Big 12 honors from the leagues writers after making 115 tackles last season. Iowa leads the series 39-20. But since Iowa State ended a 15-year losing streak to the Hawks in 1998, the Cyclones are 8-6 against Iowa. The Cyclones are 7-6 against Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz, including a thrilling 44-41 triple overtime victory over Iowa last season in Jack Trice Stadium. Steele Jantz played one of the great games ever played by an Iowa State quarterback against Iowa last season, hitting on 25-of-37 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He also ran for 42 yards for a career-high 321 yards of total offense. The feel good story of the Tulsa game was the return of ISU running back Shontrelle Johnson, who rushed for 120 yards on 18 carries with one TD. Johnson suffered a neck injury in last seasons fourth game (Texas) that very well could have ended his career. He was not cleared to play again until July. He rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries against Iowa last season. Dubuque native Josh Lenz caught a 43-yard first-quarter TD pass from Steele Jantz that was the longest play of his career. He led the Cyclones with eight catches for 96 yards. making all five of his extra-point attempts. Punter Kirby Van Der Kamp put five punts inside of the Tulsa 16-yard line, pinning the Golden Hurricane at their 2, 9, 15, 8, and 13 yard line.

PAUL RHOADS
Head Coach Fourth Season
Hometown: Ankeny, Iowa High School: Ankeny High School College: Missouri Western, 89 Graduate Degree: Utah State, 91 Year in coaching: 23rd Wife: Vickie Children: Jake and Wyatt In his first meeting with his team in January of 2009, new Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads told his Cyclones they were going to win a bowl game. His players were somewhat taken aback. Iowa State had lost its last 10 games in 2008 and hadnt had a winning season or gone to a bowl game in four years. Iowa States players followed their leader in 2009 en route to a 7-6 record that included a 14-13 win over Minnesota in the Insight Bowl. The final results could not have been better. The Cyclones tied Washington as the most improved BCS teams nationally with five more wins than the previous season. The seminal moment of the season was a 9-7 win at Nebraska, accomplished by an Iowa State team that played without its starting quarterback or running back. It was the Cyclones first win in Lincoln in 32 years. Rhoads was the first Iowa State coach to post a winning season in his inaugural season since 1931. In 2010, he coached Iowa State to its first win againstTexas, beating the 22nd-ranked Longhorns in Austin. The victory was the Cyclones first road win against a ranked opponent in 20 years. Rhoads third signature winwas a 44-41 triple overtime victory over Iowa on Sept. 10 in Ames. On Oct. 29 Rhoads Cyclones scored their biggest ever win over a ranked team, beating No. 19 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas 41-7 What . followed was the biggest win in school history, 37-31 in double overtime against No. 2 Oklahoma State in Ames. The victory propelled Iowa State to the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York, N.Y. Rhoads is a 1989 graduate of Missouri Western University with a degree in economics. He earned his masters from Utah State in 1991.

STREAK BREAKER

When he was hired as the Iowa State head coach, Paul Rhoads immediately went to work breaking some unsightly losing streaks. After going 5-19 over the previous two seasons, Iowa State was in the midst of several losing streaks. Those streaks have been turned around with Rhoads in charge.

KLEIN AND HORNE LEAD BIG 12 COACHES ALL-CONFERENCE CYCLONES

In 2011, the Big 12 coaches voted junior ISU linebacker A.J. Klein the Co-Defensive Player-ofthe-Year with Oklahoma DE Frank Alexander. Cyclone receiver/kick returner Aaron Horne was chosen as the leagues Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Klein is the first Cyclone to earn defensive player of the year honors.

THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 24

Iowa State is 16-1 under head coach Paul Rhoads when holding teams under 24 points and 3-19 when allowing 24 or more points. The 52-38 win over Texas Tech in 2010 broke the mold. It was the most points ever scored by Iowa State against a Big 12 opponent and the most points allowed in a conference victory since the Missouri Valley Conference began in 1907 .

CYCLONE SENIORS HAVE LED DESPITE ADVERSITY

At the end of preseason practice, Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads shared with his team the journeys of several Cyclone seniors who have overcome adversity and stand as starters and key contributors heading in the 2012 season. Jeremy Reeves has overcome several injuries at cornerback. The native of Allen, Texas has 151 career tackles and four interceptions. The Allen, Texas made five tackles and broke up a pass against Tulsa. He returned a pick 94 yards for a touchdown against Northern Iowa in 2010, the second-longest interception return in school history. In total, Reeves has four interception returns for 155 yards. Reeves also returned an onside kick for a touchdown against Texas Tech in 2010 that iced a 52-28 win over Texas Tech. First-team All-Big 12 linebacker Jake Knott, an academic All-Big 12 honoree, may be the leagues king of perseverance. Last season, Knott played with a dislocated shoulder. During the game at Baylor, the shoulder popped out twice. Both times he popped it back in himself. Knott had surgery on his right arm in spring practice of 2011 but broke it again in last seasons opener vs. Northern Iowa. Then, in addition to his shoulder issues, he broke his right hand in the Baylor game. Knott never missed a game the entire season. With 11 team-high tackles against Tulsa, he has 279 career stops. Nose guard Jake McDonough struggled early in his Iowa State career. He was trying to play in the defensive line at 220 pounds. He wasnt gaining weight, he was losing it. Some began to question his commitment and he had no answers as to why he was losing weight. Eventually, doctors suspected Celiac disease that made him allergic to milk, among other foods. Ironically, he worked in the dairy secton of his local Hy-Vee store in high school. Now, McDonough starts the season at 280 pounds with 53 career tackles and three sacks. He had three tackles and 1.5 for loss. Offensive tackle Carter Bykowski, an academic All-Big 12 honoree, began his career as a tight end and saw action there as a true freshman in 2008. Bykowski was moved to the offensive line and spent the last three years learning the position while assumming a back-up role. His hard work paid off this summer and he is the starter at left tackle.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T IS CALLING CARD OF IOWA STATES UNLIKELY CO-CAPTAIN

Joining linebackers Jake Knott and A.J. Klein, running back James White and wide receiver Josh Lenz as co-captains is holder, back-up deep snapper and former Iowa State No. 3 quarterback Brett Bueker. The senior is such a leader in the weight room and behind the scenes that the Bettendorf native was voted the honor by his teammates. He was an academic All-Big 12 honoree last season (Kinesiology - health fitness major) and recognized by the Big 12 Conference as a Chick-fil-A Community of Champions team member for his volunteer work in Central Iowa. Senior linebacker A.J. Klein returned interceptions for touchdowns in games against UNI and Kansas State in 2010, making him the first Iowa Stater to accomplish the feat in a single-season since Dawan Anderson in 1996. Kleins 78-yard interception runback against Missouri in 2011 made him the all-time ISU leader with three TDs off of interceptions. It tied the record by Brent Curvey.
