Its time for round two,
as head coach Doug Berk-
shire takes over the
reigns for the second year
as the Gaylord High head
football coach. Last years
motto was do things
right with everything
from individual roles, to
how the program builds
for the future. Now that
those fundamentals are
in place, its time to start
pushing forward and
reaching or surpassing
the expectations of play-
ers, teammates and
coaches.
Berkshire, who teaches
for the Middle School has
a vast history in coaching
positions.Before taking

Fall 2012 Gaylord HS Football GAMEDAY Program
over for Mark Mendolia 2
years ago, he served as
the offensive coordinator
for 4 years.Before com-
ing to Gaylord, Berkshire
worked with the junior
varsity football teams in
Kalkaska and Elk Rapids.
He brings a ton of football
knowledge along with an
extremely enthusiastic
demeanor that athletes re-
spond to.He expects
every player to work as
hard as they can to per-
form their role to the best
of their ability.Berkshire
said. Our job as coaches
is to show each player the
right way to perform their
job on any given play.
The man leading the of-
fense for the Blue Devil is
the always slick Tyler
Frisch.The 61, 170 pound
senior has put in a lot of
work in the off season to
prepare for the starting
role throwing the pigskin
in Berkshires wing-t of-
fensive scheme.Lined up
in the backfield behind
Frisch is sophomore
standout Cotton Neff.
What the 56 160 pound
Neff lacks in size, he
more than makes up for
in raw speed.The ability
to block, execute fakes
and blast through holes is
vital for the wing-t offen-
sive to work.Gaylords
other beast in the back-
field is senior Trae Hill.
This 60, 165 pound senior
is an absolute workhorse
who has the potential to
score on any play and has
the ability to take over a
game at any time.He has
a super stars name and
may just have a super star
year.
Working on stopping
others team offensive
schemes are Linebackers,
Trent Hunt, Alex Dodder,
and Zach Wagner.This
trio of seniors will have a
lot of responsibility on its
shoulders trying to figure
out opposing offenses
while providing the sen-
ior leadership on the de-
fensive side of the ball.
Trent brings an aggres-
sive attitude every time
he steps on the field.I
try and lead the defense
not only with my mouth,
but how I carry myself on
the field.I know that
when a less experienced
player sees me out there
going 100 percent every
down in games and in
practice he is going to fol-
low my lead.
Berkshire doesnt know
how his team will fare in
the 2012 campaign, but
hes been around the
sport long enough to
know that if his kids push
themselves in practice
they will have success at
game time.

Fall 2012 Gaylord HS Football GAMEDAY Program
By Mike Dunn
GAYLORD There were
lots of changes last year for
the Gaylord football program.
Head coach Doug Berkshire
began to put his signature on
the Blue Devils in his first
year at the helm and the play-
ers made the transition from
a single-wing type of offen-
sive scheme to a wing-T at-
tack with some spread
elements mixed in.
Berkshire, a Gaylord Mid-
dle School teacher who had
previously served a four-year
stint as defensive coordinator
for the Blue Devils in the
1990s and had also served as
JV coach, acknowledged that
his team was on a steep
learning curve heading into
the 2011 campaign.
Berkshires focus was on
doing things the right way
and building a sound pro-
gram from the ground floor
up.
Gaylord finished the sea-
son with a 2-7 mark, showing
flashes of very good things at
times but also experiencing
some of the anticipated
bumps along the way.
Berkshire wants to build
on what his returning players
learned a year ago and con-
tinue to make strides in the
season ahead.
Here is a game-by-game
recap of the 2011 season:
WEEK 1: GAYLORD 12,
CHEBOYGAN 7
GAYLORD This was cer-
tainly a sweet win for the
Blue Devils against tradi-
tional rival Cheboygan and it
got the Berkshire Era off to a
very positive start. It was
Gaylords first win since Oc-
tober of 2009.
Im happy for the kids,
Berkshire said afterward.
They worked really hard for
this. Its always nice anytime
you can beat Cheboygan.
They have a great program
there and a great coach and
theyve been our football ri-
vals for a long time.
It wasnt a pretty game. It
was more of an old-fashioned
black-and-blue battle between
two stubborn, determined op-
ponents who both wanted
very badly to win.
Early in the second quar-
ter, Gaylord senior quarter-
back Trevor Huff found fast
Chris Crenshaw streaking
open on a crossing pattern
and the duo hooked up for 55
yards, the longest single play
of the game for either side.
That brought the ball into the
red zone and Huff made an-
other magnificent pass, this
one a high, arcing fade pass
down the left sidelines to
leaping senior receiver Troy
Gahm in the end zone to com-
plete a 14-yard TD.
Gaylord played tough, ag-
gressive defense against the
Chiefs and held a 6-0 lead
through the first half and
maintained that lead into the
fourth quarter.
Huff, who had a notable
debut as the starting quarter-
back, made another big play
late in the game, finding a
seam behind big Trevor
Adams and motoring eight
yards to paydirt to give the
Blue Devils what turned out
to a game-clinching TD with
6:25 showing on the game
clock.
Safety Gordon Hoyem had
one of the key defensive plays
in the game, making a leap-
ing interception near the goal
line late in the first half to
thwart a Cheboygan scoring
opportunity.
Robb Hansen, Jay Lind-
gren, Chaz Moore, Alex Dod-
der, Caleb Tomes and Chris
Crenshaw were among the
defenders who shined for the
Blue Devils in the opener.
WEEK 2: JOHN GLENN 35,
GAYLORD 12
BANGOR Host John
Glenn, a perennial gridiron
power, used a grinding
ground game to control play
in the game that was played
Sept. 1.
Gaylord trailed 21-0 in the
second quarter but rallied
with a long drive before the
end of the half, moving from
midfield to the 1-yard line
after inheriting excellent
field position through the 32-
yard kickoff return of Kyle
Fahler.
Senior QB Trevor Huff,
poised and cool in the pocket,
kept the drive alive with a
clutch fourth-down hook-up
with reliable Chris Crenshaw.
After moving to the 1, how-
ever, the Blue Devils were not
able to score and still trailed
by three touchdowns going
into the second half.
If we would have scored
there, it would have changed
the complexion of the game,
Berkshire said.
The Blue Devils scored
twice in the fourth quarter,
completing two long scoring
drives. Huff fired to glue-fin-
gered Gordon Hoyem for 19
yards to put Gaylords first
points on the board.
Gaylords second TD came
courtesy of the run game as
Fahler flew through a gaping
hole created by Danny Miller
and company and tallied
from 5 yards out.
Berkshire noted the strong
play of Miller on the O-line
and tackle Chaz Moore on the
defensive line in the contest.
WEEK 3: T.C. WEST 34,
GAYLORD 12
GAYLORD Gaylord gave
visiting Big North rival Tra-
verse City West all it wanted
in the first half of this game
played Sept. 9 on the home
field. The heavily favored Ti-
tans were reeling after a first
half in which their offense
struggled and they trailed
Gaylord on the scoreboard.
Gaylord started the game
deep in its own end, bottled
up inside its own 10-yard line.
The poor field position only
fueled the competitive juices
of senior QB Trevor Huff. On
the second play from scrim-
mage, Huff calmly went back
in the pocket and found the
fleeting figure of Kyle Fahler
breaking free over the mid-
dle. Fahler got the football
and flew quickly into top
gear, leaving everyone on the
field in his wake to complete

an electrifying 93-yard TD
strike.
West came back to pull
ahead with a TD and a two-
point conversion on its next
drive but the only other scor-
ing in the first half came
from the home team.
Late in the second quarter,
Huff was at it again, this time
firing a laser to reliable
Trevor Raymond. The Trevor-
to-Trevor hook-up went for 20
yards and put the Blue Devils
on top 12-8. That was still the
score when the half ended.
West went about righting
the ship quickly in the third
quarter, scoring on its initial
drive Griffin Forrester broke
free for a 29-yard TD to put
the Titans on top 14-12. It was
the first of three TDs the visi-
tors would score in the quar-
ter.
Huff hit on 12-of-22 aerials
for 181 yards with a pair of
TDs and he was only sacked
once for a 7-yard loss and the
fleet-footed Fahler pulled in
five passes for 106 yards of
real estate on the night.
WEEK 4: CADILLAC 7,
GAYLORD 6
GAYLORD Gaylord took
favored Cadillac to the wire
before losing a heartbreaker
in front of the home crowd in
a game played Sept. 16.
Gaylord, whose No. 1 and
No. 2 kickers were both un-
able to perform, attempted a
two-point conversion after its
lone touchdown in the fourth
quarter but could not convert.
That turned out to be the dif-
ference in the one-point game.
It was a painful loss for the
Blue Devils, who played a
whale of a game defensively
and did a great job of contain-
ing Cadillacs explosive soph-
omore quarterback Jalen
Brooks and keeping him from
running wild.
Gaylord trailed 7-0 in the
fourth quarter but rallied be-
hind the passing of Trevor
Huff and the running of Jeff
Guethlein, Robb Hansen and
Fahler. The Blue Devils TD
came when the fleet-footed
Fahler found a seam behind
the blocking up front of
Danny Miller and company
and raced 3 yards to the end
zone.
Then came the conversion
attempt but Huff s pass to
Caleb Tomes was defended
well and the throw went in-
complete. The score was 7-6
with 10:12 remaining and
thats how it ended up.
Defensive end Alex Dodder
had an interception for the
Blue Devils.
WEEK 5: GAYLORD 18,
ALPENA 0
ALPENA Gaylord earned
its second win on a night that
was more suited to ducks,
worms and marine creatures.
The Blue Devils improved
to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the
Big North with the shutout at
Alpena that was played on
Sept. 23.
In a game played in a
steady downpour, Alpena
could not get untracked
against the swarming Blue
Devils and managed just four
first downs and 61 net yards
of offense.
Gaylord running back Jeff
Guethlein moved like a
launched torpedo through the
muck and mire, amassing 132
yards of real estate on 32 car-

ries and scoring one of the
three Gaylord TDs on a 5-yard
burst off-tackle in the third
quarter.
Fullback Caleb Tomes, who
also had a whale of a game
defensively, plowed over from
a yard out to score Gaylords
first points of the game just
seconds before the first half
ended.
Quarterback Trevor Huff
closed out the scoring in the
fourth quarter with a pretty
play-action pass, finding reli-
able Troy Gahm for the TD.
With Chaz Moore, Robb
Hansen, Gordon Hoyem, Alex
Dodder, Kyle Fahler, Tomes
and company applying the
pressure to the Wildcats down
after down, the shutout was
never in serious jeopardy.
WEEK 6: PETOSKEY 27,
GAYLORD 7
PETOSKEY Petoskey,
playing before a large home
crowd with pink jerseys in
honor of Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, improved
to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the
Big North in this game played
Sept. 30. For Gaylord, it was
another game in which the
Blue Devils showed fire and
battled hard from start to fin-
ish and had nothing to hang
their heads about when the
final buzzer sounded.
Down 20-0 going into the
fourth quarter, the Blue Dev-
ils put together what would
be their lone scoring drive.
Senior quarterback Trevor
Huff, showing poise in the
pocket in spite of being ha-
rassed and hounded fre-
quently by the pink-clad
Petoskey defenders, fired a
strike on a slant-in over the
middle to speedburner Chris
Crenshaw for a 16-yard score
with 9:18 left to play. Alex
Webbers PAT made it 20-7.
Punter Josh Kates ended
up being Gaylords leading
rusher with a 36-yard run on
a fake punt late in the first
half. Kyle Fahler pounded out
28 hard-earned yards on five
carries and Jeff Guethlein
picked up 10 yards on nine
tries while Caleb Tomes
pushed to eight yards on two
attempts.
Kates boomed the punts
where he didnt fake and run,
averaging a whopping 40.5
yards on his four boots, in-
cluding a 50-yarder.
WEEK 7: OGEMAW HEIGHTS
41, GAYLORD 21
GAYLORD The host Blue
Devils were missing some
starters but still put up a bat-
tle in their Big North con-
frontation with Ogemaw
Heights on Oct. 7. Gaylord ral-
lied in the third quarter to
make it close.
Junior Tyler Frisch started
his first varsity game behind
center and held up pretty well
against some very hard pres-
sure from the Falcons. Frisch
was tackled for 43 yards in
losses in the game but also
broke away for a 17-yard TD
run. He showed poise in the
pocket as well. In spite of the
pressure, he did not throw an
interception in 20 attempts
and he hit in eight of those
aerials, including TD strikes
to Chris Crenshaw and Alex
Dodder.
Frisch accounted for 127
yards passing with a perfectly
thrown 29-yard TD missile to
the speedy Dodder down the
right sidelines in the third
quarter and a 23-yard TD
strike on slant-in pass to
Crenshaw.
The glue-fingered Cren-
shaw pulled in three passes
for 49 yards in the contest and
Dodder made two grabs for 36
yards. Trae Hill hauled in two
for 28 yards and Gordon
Hoyem had one catch for 14
yards.
Hard-nosed, hard-driving
Caleb Tomes was the work-
horse in the backfield for the
Blue Devils, bulling, bashing
and dashing to 50 yards on 11
tries, including an 18-yard
breakaway. Jeff Guethlein
also ran hard, earning 31
yards on four attempts.
WEEK 8: T.C. CENTRAL 40,
GAYLORD 0
TRAVERSE CITY In the
first half, the tenacious,
swarming Gaylord defense
kept it close. In the second
half, though, host Traverse
City Central was able to gen-
erate some offense and pull
away in this one played Oct.
14.
In the first half, the Gay-
lord defense, fueled by the
strong play of Robb Hansen,
Caleb Tomes, Kyle Fahler,
Cody Morris and others,
forced two turnovers and held
the high-powered Trojan of-
fense to just a 27-yard field
goal by Jacob Gorter.
The Trojans also had a
safety in the first half after
gang tackling Blue Devil QB
Trevor Huff in the end zone.
The safety came on the first
play after a punt from Cen-
trals Ryan Vanschuren was
downed at the 1-yard line.
Huff battled gamely but
was under pressure all game
long. The senior signal caller
connected on 5-of-13 passes
for 80 yards. He was sacked
four times and hurried sev-
eral other times.
Hard-driving running back
Kyle Fahler fought for a team-
high 24 yards rushing on six
carries and fullback Robb
Hansen bulled to 17 yards on
six tries. Eric Mason broke
free for a 12-yard run, the
longest rushing gain of the
night for the Blue Devils.
Crenshaw brought in three
passes for 70 yards.
WEEK 9: ST. JOHNS 42,
GAYLORD 0
GAYLORD The host Blue
Devils closed out the regular
season at home on a tough
note, losing to talented St.
Johns team on Oct. 21. The
Redwings dominated the play
defensively, limiting Gaylord
to eight first downs and just
97 net yards of offense in a 42-
0 victory.
Game senior signal caller
Trevor Huff faced serious
pressure in the pocket from
the visitors, limiting his abil-
ity to find open receivers.
Huff was sacked twice and
hurried several times. He hit
on 3-of-13 passes for 48 yards,
including a 35-yard hook-up
with fellow senior Troy
Gahm. Chris Crenshaw had
two catches for 13 yards.
Punter Josh Kates ran the
ball twice for 30 yards, includ-
ing a 19-yarder for Gaylords
longest rushing play from
scrimmage. Gritty Kyle
Fahler pounded the ball be-
tween the tackles but met re-
sistance, netting 16 yards on
nine carries. Crenshaw car-
ried twice for seven yards and
fullback Robb Hansen bulled
to four yards on four at-
tempts.
It was the final game for
Gaylord seniors Caleb Tomes,
Alex Webber, Matt Copen-
haver, Jay Lindgren, Cody
Morris, Gordon Hoyem,
Willis Gelow, Craig Richard-
son, Jeff Guethlein, Eric
Mason, Mitch Vasicek, Lance
Mercer, Spencer LaRose,
Adam Becker, Chaz Moore,
Travis Chojnacki, Curtis Dar-
ling and Kyle Firman in addi-
tion to Huff, Gahm and Kates.
