KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North CARP RIVER

Council dealt with the recommendations from the Auditor General on the Carp River last week. As requested by him, the consultant had corrected the data and prepared a revised plan for the river to take account of additional water that could flow to the river. The changes involved an additional three storm water ponds. Although not one of the recommendations, senior staff, myself and Councillor Qadri agreed that having a complete independent review of the whole modeling process was needed to ensure that there is complete assurance that the river system will be properly restored and Council supported that review. In the meantime, no development will be approved in the vicinity of the Carp although development can proceed on lands outside of the floodplain. Minto, for example, has started preliminary work on their lands outside the Carp floodplain and all of the Mattamy developments are outside the area.

RELAY FOR LIFE

On Jun. 20 Im participating in the Relay for Life at Sacred High School in Stittsville. This is an overnight non-competitive relay that celebrates cancer survivors and pays tribute to the lives of loved ones. It involves teams of ten people who take turns walking, running or strolling around a track to raise money to support the work of the Canadian Cancer Society. It's a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. My team is comprised solely of cancer survivors. Wed appreciate your support. FEDERATION OF CANADIAN MUNICIPALITIES

At the end of May I will be joining municipal colleagues from across Canada at the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and seeking election as a member of the Board of Directors. FCM supports municipalities with the federal government, including managing a number of grant programs. Having a representative from Ottawa will ensure that the nations capital is represented in discussions with the government.

GIVE-AWAY WEEKEND
Have some things that you dont need or want anymore but which someone else could use? Why not put them out on the curb on Give-Away Weekend, June 7-8 and let those items become someone elses treasures. Just put a free sign with them to ensure that only those items are taken, put them at the curb either day, and bring any remaining items in at the end of the day. This is an easy way to reduce items going to landfill and take away the need for landfill expansion. Your waste collection calendar is now being distributed and shows the give away dates.
