High school journalists win statewide awards

Junior Abby Mesaros receives her Excellence Award in Newspaper Design from journalism teacher Rod Satterthwaite.

Four Dexter journalism students are among the best in Michigan. The students all won awards while attending the Michigan Interscholastic Press Associations Summer Journalism Workshop held in Lansing in late July. MIPA, a nonprofit organiza-

tion dedicated to promoting excellence in student journalism, offers the workshop every year to students and gives them a chance to learn various skills through classes. Awards are given in each class to students who excel through the five-day period. Three of the four students were in DHS journalism teacher Rod Satterthwaites newspaper writing class.

Satterthwaite is also the associate director at the workshop. It (the awards) validates that we are doing the right thing in terms of what we are teaching them, he said. Ten students from DHS attended the workshop at Michigan State University and took classes that range in topic from writing to design to photography.

Lauren Kingsley, owner of the Painted Trout and organizer of the very successful annual Art on the Farm show in Dexter, has created a new event: the Great Lakes Sporting Arts Show, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 8, at 12075 Island Lake Road in Dexter Township. The whole thing boils down to my thinking its high time the community of people who dedicate themselves to field sports with traditional arts and skills got together and showcased their work, Kingsley said. Ive met quite a few terrific artists and artisans in Michigan people who make bamboo rods, hand-forged knives, hand made boats, long bows, and decoys and I want to gather them for a show. Its been difficult pulling some of these artists out of the trees, since so many are in remote areas of the state and like it that way, LAUREN KINGSLEY but the group event organizer we have is absolutely top notch. As many as 30 artisans and artists will showcase their work: including bamboo rod making, knife making, gun engraving, fly-tying, boat building, carving, longbow making and more. The show also will feature antique and rare books, fine crafts by Michigan artists and fine art related to fishing, hunting and sporting dogs.
