News From Room 207

Week of 9/10/12
Welcome Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,
I hope you are having a relaxing weekend. We have an exciting week ahead of us as we enter our first full week together. Your children are

settling in nicely with 4 1.

th

grade expectations. There are several

areas that I need some help with. Please read the items below. Many children had missing or late homework last week. Please check your childs planner every night with your child present. Your child should check off the planner as the work is completed, and then place the completed work back into their homework folder in their backpack immediately. This strategy will help your child to have all of their work completed and at school each day and will help them to become more independent as the year progresses. Parents should be signing the completed reading log weekly also. Some students are having difficulty registering on the Xtramath site. If you have used Xtramath previously, you will need to register using a different email address. This will allow you to start the program again. We have a peanut-free classroom this year. Please remember that there are NO snacks that should be sent in containing peanuts. We often eat snacks in the classroom and it is a serious health hazard if any snacks contain peanuts.
Scholastic book orders are coming home in Monday folders and orders are due by Friday, September 14, 2012. Instructions for ordering will be attached. With each online order, our classroom will earn a free book. Additionally, our September orders earn triple the bonus points than any other order during the year. These points can also be used to purchase books for our classroom.

English Language Arts Your children have successfully completed their DRA reading assessments. I was very impressed with how everyone persevered through the challenge. Our focus this week will be on establishing routines for our Daily 3 block and creating our vocabulary notebooks. Additionally, we will continue with our persuasive writing pieces based on our summer reading books. R ead Aloud Our next read aloud will be T he M iraculous Adventures of Edward T ulane by Kate DiCamillo. Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. A girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely, owns the rabbit. And then, one day, he was lost and his adventures begin.

M ath We will complete Unit 1 this week. Your child should review for the test at: http://sqworl.com/zdkaol Students need to practice math facts nightly. We will be completing weekly mad minutes to check our progress. Social Studies This week will focus on different types of maps, the continents, oceans, and hemispheres Science Our walls are constructed and will need to sustain a hit from a softball roll on Monday afternoon. We are excited to see which walls will survive. We will also begin our unit on Earth Materials this week as we investigate the properties of Mock rocks.
